This course will include creation of a resume, a cover letter and interview skills. (1 credit) Pre-requisite: Anatomy 5 Mondays 1:15pm 3:15pm September 24 to December 10 Point Location 1 (TCM) Students learn the location of approximately half of the body s acupuncture points. (1 credit) No pre-requisite Mondays 1:15pm - 5:15pm October 1, 15, 29, November 12, 26, & December 10 Aromatherapy 1 (NHP/CEU) The use of essential oils for relaxation, beauty and health. Learn several hands-on applications. Mondays 6:00pm 9:00pm October 15, 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19, 26, & December 10 Classics and Terminology (TCM) This course is the study of the Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor). Students complete assignments related to each chapter and discuss the content of each chapter with faculty. Additionally students learn to read, pronounce and understand Pin Yin & Chinese characters for acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine purposes. 8 Tuesdays Oriental Acupressure & TuiNa 1 (TCM/NHP/CEU) Students learn analysis techniques, to prepare a client intake assessment and to evolve and execute a treatment plan and evolve a basic understanding of Tuina techniques. The use of TuiNa to treat common pain-related ailments is also presented and discussed. (1 credit) Pre-requisite: Anatomy 6 Wednesdays 8:30am 10:30am Communications (IAM/TCM/NHP/CEU) Learn the key characteristics for day-to-day communications with clients and understand the personal and client needs. Wednesdays 8:30am 10:30am Physiology 6 (IAM/TCM) A deeper study of energy formation in the cell, the nervous system and metabolism. (1 credit) Pre-requisite: Physiology 5 Wednesdays 8:30am 10:30am Physiology 7 (IAM/TCM) Students continue to study the finer aspects of the nervous system. This course also takes an in-depth look into the muscular system, including a study of skeletal and smooth muscle, and the cardiovascular system. 10 Wednesdays Gynecology 2 (TCM) Students learn western pathologies related to pregnancy and childbirth and to differentiate TCM patterns for those conditions. Emphases are made to understand TCM patterns, treatment principles and acupuncture point prescription for every medical condition discussed in class. (1 credit) Pre-requisite: TCM Assessment & Diagnosis Wednesdays 10:30am 12:30pm Modern Mental Diseases (TCM) To understand the symptoms and causes of mental disorders and what TCM may or may not be able to do. (1 credit) Pre-requisites: Theory Foundations, TCM Assessment & Diagnosis Wednesdays 8:30am - 10:30am Off Sites 3 (IAM) Massage therapy treatment is given to people with mental and physical developmental disabilities. (2 credits) Pre-requisite: Massage Techniques 1-4, Anatomy & Physiology 4 Wednesdays 1:15pm 5:15pm Client Assessment 1 (IAM) An introduction to clinical assessment including case histories, client-interview, as well as both visual and physical examination techniques. Wednesdays 1:15pm 3:15pm Colour Therapy (NHP/CEU) Learn about the characteristics and benefits from the use of colour light to help the body heal or maintain its health balance. 11 Wednesdays Pediatrics (TCM) Learn the TCM treatments used for various childhood disorders. (1 credit) Pre-requisite: TCM Assessment & Diagnosis Wednesdays 6:00pm 8:00pm Iridology 2 (NHP) Advanced analytical techniques, studying the location of various organ reflexes in the iris. (1 credit) Pre-requisite: Iridology 1 Wednesdays 8:00 10:00pm Anatomy/Physiology 1 (CEU/NHP/TCM) Anatomy and Physiology 1 is an introduction course to the human body which includes body descriptions, terminology and basic physiology such as protein synthesis and cell division. The course continues with the study of the cell including internal cellular structures. The second half of the course begins with the study of individual systems of the human body. The skeletal and muscular systems are introduced covering the internal structure and function of bones and muscles along with the identification of all 206 bones in the human body and major muscle groups Wednesday 6:00pm - 8:00pm Wednesdays & Thursdays Principles of Treatments & Advanced Techniques 5-8 (IAM) Learn to treat a variety of chronic conditions using massage therapy. (4 credits) Pre-requisite: Principles of Treatments/Advanced Techniques 1-4 Wednesdays 1:15pm 5:15pm & Thursdays 8:30am 12:30pm September 26 to December 13 Terminology 1 (IAM/NHP/CEU) The use of roots, prefixes, suffixes, plurals and opposites. 12 Wednesdays & Thursdays Terminology 2 (IAM/NHP/CEU) Significant focus is placed on the understanding, writing and pronouncing of medical terms, as they relate to Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology. The emphasis is on body systems. Wednesdays 3:15pm 5:15pm & Thursdays 8:30am 10:30am November 7 to December 12 Thursdays Hydrotherapy and Self Care for the RMT (IAM/NHP) The majority of this course covers hydrotherapy theory with emphasis on practical hydrotherapy applications in both a clinical and self care context. (2 credits) Pre-requisite: Anatomy/Physiology 1-4, Massage Techniques 1-4 Thursdays 1:15pm 5:15pm September 27 to December 13 Pregnancy and Stages of Life Clinic (IAM) This course covers the proper skills and techniques required by a massage therapist to treat pregnant, labouring, postpartum women and their infants. Evolve your understanding of ph balance, food and non-fanatical healthy living. Thursdays 6:00 8:00pm September 27 to December 13 Herbal Therapeutics 2 (NHP/CEU) An introduction to herbal preparations. Learn the basics of how to work with various solvents to extract the healing properties of plants for internal and external uses. Course will cover herbal infusions and decoctions, infused vinegars & honeys, herbal oils & salves, tinctures and more. Thursdays 6:00pm 8:00pm September 27 to December 13 Iridology 1 (NHP/CEU) Learn the foundational principles of Iridology and its use as an assessment aid for natural health practitioners. Thursdays 8:00pm 10:00pm September 27 to December 13 Materia Medica 2 (NHP) A continuation of Materia Medica I, this course further explores the healing plants of Western herbalism while continuing to build your own Materia Medica. An in depth exploration of a broad diversity of medicinal and healing plants used by Western herbalists*, this course will provide a basic understanding of what a Materia Medica is and how to use it to deepen your herbal practice. You will gain knowledge of the specifics of many common herbs including indications and contraindications, energetic applications, the most recent scientific research, modern usage and dosage information. *Emphasis on local, bio-regional plants. 14 Weekend Courses Saturdays Reflexology 1 (NHP/CEU) An introduction to the history, principles & theory of Reflexology, its benefits, its cautions, possible client reactions and what it does not do. The student also learns to see the foot as a reflection of the body. R-1 looks at the zones of the foot & specific reflexes for the major organs & glands will be presented. Students will be introduced to the plantar and dorsal foot charts, and learn to identify the location of reflex points on the feet. The student will learn about the Endocrine, Digestive and Reproductive systems. Anatomical positions vis-a-vis reflex points will be studied. The bones of the feet will be presented, along with the major organs & glands. Saturdays 9:30am to 4:30pm September 29, October 13, 20 & 27 Saturdays Reflexology 2 (NHP/CEU) The student s knowledge and skill development continues to be developed for the feet, with an introduction to the hands. The feet continue to be the primary point of application for Reflexology and as a result, the student must become highly proficient. Additional foot techniques will be presented to enhance skill development. The following systems will be presented: Nervous, Skeletal, Muscular, Respiratory, Lung & Circulatory, Lymphatic, Urinary / Advanced treatment techniques are presented & practiced. The foot reflexes will be discussed in detail. Reflexology 2 reviews in detail the bone/muscle structure of the feet relating it to the body systems & its reflexes. The student will be able to complete a professional full foot treatment upon the completion of this subject. The hands will be introduced including the treatment order. 15 Saturdays & Sundays Professionalism and the Healthcare Practitioner (NHP/CEU/TCM) As healthcare practitioners, the development of the skills and specific knowledge applicable to your principle health discipline remains a high priority however, good character, personal and professional behaviours and practices, and work ethic have become vitally important to the overall health industry. Health care is also a service business, yet for many this is a foreign concept. Patient and client satisfaction is necessary to the continuance in business as a professional, however, the practitioner at times focuses too much on delivery of a skill or knowledge and is not being sufficiently cognizant of the true needs and expectations of the client. Learn the foundation of this 3000 year old Chinese medicine, including Yin-Yang theory, the 5 elements, Qi, blood and all organ functions. Sundays 8:30am 12:30pm September 30, October 14, 28, November 11, 25 & December 9 Sundays Diagnosis & Treatments 1 (TCM) Students learn four methods of TCM diagnosis including inspection, palpation, interrogation and olfactory/listening. After completing this course, students will be able to begin to differentiate TCM patterns based on signs and symptoms, and to understand treatments in term of related pattern.
