This packet is designed to provide you with information about the program, admission process, and curriculum requirements for the PTA Program. 2 APPLYING Each step needs to be completed in order: 1. Admissions Application to MMCC submitted Placement testing Schedule an appointment with the Library Learning Services (LLS) by ing If preferred, call to schedule placement testing at (989) for Harrison or (989) ext. 287 for Mt.Pleasant. Advising All incoming students must meet with an MMCC advisor for degree planning and course selection. Advising is available by appointment during regular business hours. Transfer students are also encouraged to meet with an advisor. Please call for an appointment with an advisor: Mt. Pleasant (989) ext. 100 OR Harrison (989) View the PTA Information Meeting online at and take the quiz at the end of the online meeting. Register for classes. (You may register for all prerequisites and/or corequisites prior to acceptance. Upon acceptance into the PTA Program, you will be allowed to register for PTA Program classes.) PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENTS All PTA Student Candidates: The following courses must each be passed with a grade of B- (2.7) or higher and may be repeated only once, including withdrawals: BIO 135 (or BIO 141 and 142), ALH 100, ENG 111, SPE 101 or SPE 257, and PTA 101. BIO 135 (or BIO 141 and 142) must be taken within 5 years of beginning the PTA courses. It is the student s responsibility to make sure all MMCC credits, transfer credits, and test outs are all in order by the application deadline. This can be done by making an appointment with an advisor. OTHER PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS All other program requirements must be passed with a cumulative GPA of B- (2.7) or higher with a grade of C or above in each course. The other program requirements may be taken before or while PTA courses are in progress. These courses are listed on the PTA Program Guide and include: CIS 100, MAT 104, PHY 101, PSY 101, HUM 200 and SSC 200. ADMISSIONS A new cohort of 18 students will be admitted each fall s will be sent out to students whether it is an acceptance or denial. Acceptance notification will take place in June. APPLICATIONS Students must have completed or be actively enrolled in all of their prerequisite courses at the application deadline. Students must meet the application deadline and all other requirements, to be eligible to apply to the next PTA Program. Applications are available on the PTA MMCC Website at Applications will be DUE March 1 st. If this falls on a weekend, the deadline will be extended to the next business day. Students that are not admitted may reapply. Students may apply as many times as they choose. 3 SELECTIVE ADMISSIONS MMCC admits students to the PTA Program under a Selective Admissions Process. The criteria for admission will be based on: GPA in pre-requisite courses GPA of other program requirements Credits at MMCC Previous Earned Degree Health Care Experience CREDITS AT MMCC Indicate number of credits successfully completed at MMCC. Transfer credits are not accepted, only any course that student passed at MMCC, whether it is a prerequisite or not. PREVIOUSLY EARNED DEGREE Only one previous earned degree will be accepted. Documentation, per transcript, MUST be provided from the conferring institution. PREVIOUS HEALTH CARE EXPERIENCE All health care experience MUST be provided by documentation of job description, length of service, and hours per week from supervisor on agency letterhead for work completed in the past 2 years. All direct and indirect work must be for a minimum of 4 months and must be documented as such from the employer. Rehab (PT/OT/SLP) volunteering must be completed in skilled rehab services. Must be a minimum of 40 hours in the past 2 years and documented on letterhead as such from the place of volunteering. Completing the Certified Nurse Aid or any other training course does not qualify as work experience; you must be working in that profession. DRUG AND ALCOHOL SCREENING Beginning Fall 2015, mandatory drug and alcohol screening will be in effect for all Health Sciences programs students. This is at the students expense and not covered by MMCC. Students will receive a packet of information and instructions once accepted into the program. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK The enactment of the revised Public Health Code effective April 1, 2006 now requires that all health care providers have a criminal background check (CBC) with fingerprinting that includes an FBI check. Based on this legislation, students final acceptance into the Physical Therapist Assistant program may be affected by the results of this background check. The CBC will be at the students expense, is not covered by MMCC and MUST be completed prior to the specified deadline or you will forfeit your seat in the PTA Program. Students will receive further information once accepted into the program. Random drug screening may be required by the healthcare agency or at the discretion of the clinical instructor. Students will be responsible for covering the cost of drug screenings. Students with a felony conviction and certain misdemeanors may not be accepted into the PTA Program. Disclaimer: MMCC is not responsible if an applicant is denied licensure or certification from the program s governing agency (i.e., State Board of Physical Therapy, etc.) after completion of the program. If you are actively enrolled in classes at the time of application those grades will be included in the admissions process providing they are posted by May 30 th. When transferring credits to MMCC from other colleges/universities, the official transcripts must be received on or before May 30 th. Late documents will NOT be accepted for consideration, and students will need to reapply for the next admission cycle. Final acceptance into the Physical Therapist Assistant Program is pending a clear criminal background check and drug and alcohol screening. Clare Ave. Harrison, MI midmich.edu Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) CAREER DESCRIPTION Physical therapist assistants help patients who have difficulty moving due to illness or injury. Working under the supervision of physical therapists, they administer treatments to reduce patients pain and to help them regain as much function as possible. MMCC s PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Patients needing physical therapy may suffer from a wide range of problems, including back pain, fractured bones, or paralysis. In some cases their injuries are the result of car crashes, sports mishaps, or other accidents. Other patients are coping with diseases such as arthritis, multiple s c l e r o s i s, c e r e b r a l p a l s y, o r h e a r t d i s e a s e. Program takes two years to complete (not including prerequisites) 18 weeks of clinical education with PT s & PTA s Hands on classroom training has ratio of 1 faculty member to 12 students Most faculty members are also currently still practicing patient care Training is performed in the PTA Skills Lab on the Mt. Pleasant When a new patient visits a physical therapy office, the physical therapist assesses the problem and determines a treatment plan. The physical therapist assistant then helps administer the treatment, as directed by the therapist. MICHIGAN WAGES PTA s participate in manual physical therapy, ultrasound, traction, electrical stimulation, assessment of strength, balance exercises and body mechanics training. Doan campus, with up to date equipment and technology. Entry-level salaries for PTAs typically range from around $30,000 to $40,000 a year. The median annual income for people in this career is approximately $48,000. The type of employer PTAs have can greatly affect their income.
