The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is ranked the Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America, in part because it fully integrates research, clinical care, and education through the Continuing Education (CE) programs offered by the RIC Academy. The RIC Academy CE programs help you keep abreast of changes in your field. The curriculum is grounded in evidence-based practice when appropriate as well as based on the collective clinical experience of our staff. RIC Academy courses are taught by interdisciplinary teams of recognized specialists from RIC and visiting experts from across the country and around the world. COURSE DESCRIPTION This interactive workshop is designed to teach participants to comprehensively evaluate and develop an evidence-based intervention plan for the neurologic upper extremity. Management of the upper extremity (ex. managing subluxation, spasticity, weakness, and pain) as well as improving functional use of the upper extremity will be emphasized. Teaching strategies include: lecture, demonstration, questions and answers, and clinical problem solving using slides and videotapes. Specific issues include: neurological/biomechanical impairments that impact upon function, superimposed orthopedic limitations, methods of shoulder support/stabilization, optimizing integration of the arm into ADL/mobility, and decreasing the impact of stereotypical movement patterns. In addition, multiple interventions will be presented that can be immediately implemented into practice. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Identify both neurologic and orthopedic aspects of the involved upper extremity using standardized and non-standardized assessments. Describe various intervention techniques to improve functional use of the upper extremity. Identify and prevent or control pain syndromes, contracture, and overuse of stereotypical movement patterns. Identify current motor control research that supports and/or challenges current management of the neurologic upper extremity. Outline management of movement disorders (ataxia and tremors) of the upper extremity.

3 FACULTY Glen Gillen, EdD, OTR, FAOTA is currently a member of the full-time faculty at Columbia University s College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has authored over 50 publications including textbooks, chapters, and peer-reviewed research. Glen is best known in the neurorehabilitation community for his contribution to the literature; the textbook Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach now in its third edition and his recently published book,(2011), Cognitive and Perceptual Rehabilitation: Optimizing Function His books and papers have been translated into several languages. He serves on various editorial boards for journals related to physical medicine and rehabilitation. He is a past recipient of AOTF s Award for Clinical Excellence in Rehabilitation and AOTA s Recognition of Achievement Award. Glen lectures extensively on the local, state, national, and university level regarding multiple topics related to neurorehabilitation. Glen s experience spans the continuum of care from acute to long term care. He maintains a clinical caseload working in the areas of acute care and inpatient rehabilitation. The daily rate for parking at the Avenue is $49.00/day. The cut-off date for room reservations is February 7 th, The room block could reach its maximum before the above cut-off dates. Rooms and rates revert to a space-available basis after the room block has reached its maximum or after the cut-off date. REFUND POLICY All cancellations must be in writing. Refunds less a 20% administrative charge will be given until Friday, February 17, RIC reserves the right to cancel or change any programs for due cause. Cancellation of a program by RIC will result in a full refund of tuition. RIC is not responsible for the refund of travel or hotel expenses under any circumstance.
