1 Ontari Dress Purple Day: Lessn 3 Lessn 3: Well-being in the Cmmunity Lessn Intrductin Well-being is that psitive sense f self, spirit, and belnging that we feel when ur physical, emtinal, scial, and cgnitive needs are being met. 1 Children wh have a psitive sense f wellbeing are mre resilient, better equipped t navigate life s challenges, and mre successful as learners. 2 Ontari child welfare research shws that the majrity f child prtectin cases invlve children whse parents are nt able t meet their basic needs because they are facing chrnic challenges such as mental health, substance abuse, spusal vilence, scial islatin, and extreme financial stress. 4 Research als shws that a child s endangered develpment and well-being can ften be mre damaging than any ther kind f abuse. 4 A child s well-being is als damaged when their gender, race, ability, language, religin, and culture is nt respected r reflected in schls r their cmmunity, and when they encunter discriminatin and prejudice. Children need help understanding that they have physical, emtinal, scial, and cgnitive needs and that it is the respnsibility f adults in the cmmunity, starting with caregivers and teachers, t ensure these needs are met. Children need help in learning t identify the cmplex range f their basic needs, and t use these skills t ask fr help if these needs are nt being met. 1. Basic needs f living things Key Themes 2.
