1 DEREE COLLEGE REVISED SYLLABUS FOR: PS2257 DIVERSITYAND SOCIAL INTERACTION LEVEL 4 3/0/3 (Revised Spring 2015) UK CREDITS: 15 PREREQUISITES: PS 1001 LE Psychology as a Social Science Level 4 AND Any 1000 or 2000 level module from Sociology or Anthropology CATALOG DESCRIPTION: RATIONALE: This course studies the Psychology of Diversity and social interaction in contemporary times. A comprehensive coverage of basic theories and current research on Diversity is presented, explaining how and why a broad range of social differences influence attitudes, behavior, experiences and social interactions. The origins and forms of stereotypes and prejudice are examined, implications of stigma and social inequalities are discussed, in addition to addressing a variety of preventative and interventions strategies at the individual and societal level. Introduce students to diversity issuesand the way perceived diversity influences people s identity, social interactions, stigma and inequalities. Traditional topics such as stereotypes, sexism, racism, as well as current topics such as weightism, ageism, sexual preference, will be covered, aiming to promote awareness and social inclusion. This course is designed for Psychology students, although students from other disciplines who wish to acquire an understanding of social related issues in our current times will benefit LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to: 1. Understand the various diversity issues of significance in today s world and outline certain social factors that influence both individual group and societal behavior. 2. Identify and understand the role of attitude formation, including categorizing and stereotyping. Fully explain how social issues may have an impact in the formulation of our beliefs, stereotypes, sociocultural experiences, and overall awareness of diversity. 3. Discuss the main issues that are pertinent in the role of ethnic and cultural heritage and the formation of identity and inclusion. Understand important variables such as race and racial stereotypes are included. Illustrate why such social issues are considered sensitive and often in need of counseling activities.
2 4. -Describe current theories and research of multi-cultural issues impacting on Group Processes, such as work diversity, group performance, and work teams. Identify various developments and multi-cultural competencies that are now in place to assist in addressing such issues. 5. Summarize empirical findings on qualitative and/or quantitative research in relation to social diversity issues. 6. Recognize ethical, social and legal issues that are evident in issues of Multiculturalism and Diversity, and identify possible Intervention strategies that can be implemented to overcome such issues. TEACHING AND LEARNING: In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the college, the following tools are used: Classes consist of lectures, video presentations and demonstration of the material presented. In class discussions of case studies and best practices when working with diversity issues. Use of Blackboard site Office hours ASSESSMENT : Class participation 0% Participation in class discussions (related to Summative thematic issues) experiential exercises/ self- reflection exercises. Midterm exam (1 hour) Short essay questions (2 out of 3) Summative 40% Final Examination (2hours) 60% Essay Questions Summative (2 out of 3) The formative assignments are aimed to enrich the students learning experience and enable them to understand the material in an in-depth and critical manner. Class participation assesses 1,2 & 3 The Midterm exam assesses learning outcomes 1 & 2 The Final exam assesses learning outcomes 1,3,4,5 & 6, with an emphasis on 3,4,5 & 6. REQUIRED READING LIST: 1.
