Personality testing provides information about an individual s emotional and personality development, about the presence of acute and chronic pathology and about an individual s judgment, problems solving skills and relationship style. It can help the referring clinician with differential diagnosis and to develop an appropriately targeted treatment plan. Common referral questions for personality assessment Is this patient a good candidate for psychotherapy? What sort of counseling is suggested and with whom? Is this patient at risk of suicide or other dangerous behaviors? What are the bases of this child s behavior problems. Please recommend medical and behavioral interventions. Would this individual benefit from treatment with an antidepressant medication? 5

Common referral questions for personality assessment What sort of psychiatric medications might be most helpful with this patient (i.e.category of antidepressant, antidepressant v. anxiety v. antipsychotic medication)? How is this patient s personality or other pathology impacting on their experience of their medical problem. What component of personality disturbance is involved in this patient s medical presentation? Intellectual testing assesses an individual s capacity for learning, reasoning and problem solving in the verbal and nonverbal realms and the other aspects of cognitive functioning presume to make up the factor entitled intelligence. Achievement testing provides information about the test subject s progress, as compared to a normative group, on development of academic skills and other areas of skill development. Adaptive behavior assessments help to specifically measure the development of those skills considered necessary to function on an independent basis. 6

What is the source of this child's frustration in school? What are this individual's strengths and weaknesses? Does this individual have a learning disability? Does this child (or adult) have attention deficit.hyperactivity disorder? To what degree? Can this individual function safely on an independent basis? Neuropsychological testing assesses memory, concentration, language skills, visuospatial skill and executive functioning. Neuropsychologists assess how an individual s cognitive status and neurological deficits impact their day to day functioning. 7

How has this individual s functioning been impacted by a head injury or other insult? Does this individual s pathologic behavior have an underlying etiology in cerebral dysfunction? How far has this person s dementia progressed? Is this person safe to drive, live independently, make financial decisions? Tips for reviewing psychological test reports Most patients will want to review their test results with their physician whether or not they have the opportunity to do so with the psychologist. Remind the patient that psychological testing uses statistical methods to compare individual scores to an appropriate and adequate normative group. We only use tests that are well researched and that have demonstrated validity and reliability that is the scores measure what they intend to measure and are stable from time to time. 8

Tips for reviewing psychological test reports Scores on psychological testing may vary based on the test subject s mood, immediate health status and motivation. On personality tests, trait scores remain more stable than those measuring mood. The subject s approach to testing is important. We use personality and memory tests that measure whether an individual is malingering and also that assess attempts at faking mood. Even scores on intelligence testing will vary slightly give feedback in terms of ranges (average, below average) etc. rather than specific scores. Tips for reviewing psychological test reports Achievement testing is compared to a national normative group. The average student in Iowa usually has better academic skills than a child at the same grade level in the national normative group. We use research to determine the meaning of psychological test scores. The interpretations rendered are not carved in stone. It is best to explain personality test results by explaining to the patient that they obtained a pattern of results like people who. 9

Frequently asked questions Do patients need an order for testing? --Not usually but we appreciate it. Can patients get a copy of their report? --Yes, but we prefer to provide that. If we believe the Does insurance pay for psychological evaluations and psychotherapy? --Almost always but not for all diagnoses or referral questions. --Manage care guidelines may limit the procedures we can utilize. More questions How do referring physicians get feedback? --We will print a copy of the report to your clinic. --You can find the report on Power Chart under Notes (non-providers nurses for instance cannot access Behavioral Services records). --Progress notes from therapy sessions, including those used to review psychological test outcomes are under Forms on Power Chart 10
