1 Signature Assignment ANTH 2346: General Anthrplgy Outcmes/Rubrics t be Assessed by the Assignment Cmmunicatin Critical Thinking Empirical and Quantitative Reasning Scial Respnsibility Assignment Descriptin Anthrplgy is an academic discipline which seeks t understand the diversity f humanity frm bth a humanistic and a scientific perspective. In this exercise, students shuld apply their anthrplgical knwledge t a case study f ethics and scial respnsibility. T cmplete this assignment, students shuld be familiar with the humanistic and scientific fcus f anthrplgy and students shuld review the ethics cde psted at the American Anthrplgical Assciatin web site. Fllwing this review, students shuld make an ethical argument in a tw page essay. ANTH 2346: General Anthrplgy Ethics and Scial Respnsibility Exercise In the 1960 s an anthrplgist and medical researcher, cllected apprximately 2,000 bld samples frm a peple (we will call them the San Jac) living in a remte area f the Amazn rain frest. The researchers tld them that they were cllecting the bld t check it fr diseases. The San Jac received many desirable gifts, like steel axes and machetes, in return fr their participatin. 50 years later, sme f the San Jac have discvered that rather than simply checking the bld fr their benefit and then discarding it, the bld was frzen and stred in 5 different universities in the United States and at an American cancer research center. With tday s technlgy, we can learn much abut human diversity frm the DNA samples that can be btained frm it, as yu have learned in this class. Researchers at thse institutins have been using the bld f the San Jac in their research and wuld like t cntinue t d s. Several different grups within the San Jac have written letters requesting the return f their bld. In the letters, they state that 50 sme years, ag, they had nt understd that the bld was t be kept. In the beliefs f the peple, all the remains and pssessins f the dead must be destryed t free their sul fr its jurney t the afterlife. They are deeply disturbed that the suls f their peple are nt at rest.
