Creating A Culture of Wellbeing Enabling our community to flourish. Rāroa Normal Intermediate School Stephen Eames, Marian Williams, Matt Tilley
Why? Changing student needs. To have the best possible teachers in front of our students and Raroa to be a place where people can flourish. In the current climate we want to look after our teachers.
Our Road map Two year focus Strategic plan Scientific research Coursera - online course Focused professional development Expert advice Parent evenings Teacher only days
Evidence - What are the Results? Welcoming staff room Smiles, laughter, music & hugs Invested interest Teachers mixing Gratitude & Positivity Motivated teachers Collective responsibility Packed staff events IWP (Individual Wellbeing Plan)
IWP - Reflective comment "I love working at Raroa. It has such a warm and welcoming culture whereby people I work with I consider friends. I feel comfortable approaching anyone with problems where I feel they can offer guidance or advice and they are always willing to offer time to do this. As a beginning teacher at this school this is something I really value and appreciate. The staffroom culture, in particularly, is so warm and positive. It is so easy to approach new groups of people or individuals to have a chat. On a challenging day, this can make all the difference before heading back to class after morning tea/lunch."

Meet MS Wellington The Story of a flourishing teacher Created By the teachers at Rāroa normal Intermediate School Illustrated by Christine luiten Supporting Health and Wellbeing for teachers
Ms Wellington works at a lovely school on the outskirts of Wellington, Aotearoa. Her school is an exciting place to work and she loves her job. Teaching is beautifully rewarding. However, it gets busy and exhausting.
Ms Wellington is aware that she needs to make a conscious effort to look after herself and support others in order to contribute to the wellbeing of the school community. Each day Ms Wellington has decisions to make.
Lucky for Ms Wellington she works with a wonderful team. She will laugh and enjoy her workmates. She makes time to listen to and get to know them.
Ms Wellington challenges herself and looks for opportunities to learn new things
Although sometimes a challenge, Ms Wellington finds opportunities to be active.
She appreciates those around her and is grateful for the special people in her life and the things they do.
Days at Rāroa are full of surprises. Ms Wellington tries to be optimistic and remain positive.
Ms Wellington accepts, respects and values the diversity of her learning community.
She reflects on her work and takes pride in the fact that she IS making a difference to the lives of others.
Ms Wellington plays to her strengths and contributes her skills to the School s learning community
She is also aware that she is only human and That sometimes she needs to find ways to relax and take time out.
A few Research Connections Actively Involved Healthy and active Research shows a strong correlation between physical activity and increased wellbeing, as well as lower rates of depression and anxiety. It is now viewed as essential for people of all ages and has been shown to slow age related cognitive decline. Evidence suggests that physical activity can increase self-belief, the ability to cope with difficult situations and provide a sense of mastery. It can also have the benefit of encouraging social interactions. -Five ways to Wellbeing (Mental Health Organisation) Skilful and inquisitive thinking Keep learning and engagement. Learning, remaining curious and setting goals leads to positive cognitive and social development, improvements in selfesteem, social interaction and a more active and involved life. It has also been shown to be effective in preventing depression in later years - Five ways to Wellbeing (Mental Health Organisation) Persistence Meaning and purpose To understand the greater impact of your work and why you chose to pursue that work. This will help you enjoy the tasks more and become more satisfied and happier. - Martin Seligman (PERMA)
Independent Taking responsibility of our own wellbeing Personal Responsibility is Crucial for the development of personal wellbeing Taking personal responsibility means not blaming others for your unhappiness. It means figuring out ways in which you can be happy despite others' (negative) behaviors and despite the external circumstances. A person who has taken personal responsibility recognizes an all-important truth about happiness: your happiness depends much more on your attitude than it does on objective, external circumstances. Respect Relationships Relationships and social connections are one of the most important aspects of life. Humans are social animals that thrive on connection, love, intimacy, and a strong emotional and physical interaction with other humans.- Martin Seligman (PERMA) Enjoying ourselves Fun joy and positivity This element of the model is one of the most obvious connections to happiness. Being able to focus on positive emotions is more than just smiling, it is the ability to be optimistic and view the past, present, and future in a positive perspective.this positive view of life can help you in relationships, work, and inspire you to be more creative and take more chances. In everyone s life, there are highs and lows, focusing on the lows increase your chances of developing depression, therefore, you should focus on the high and positive aspects of life. There are also many health benefits to optimism and positivity. - Martin Seligman (PERMA) Giving Volunteering and community involvement has been strongly linked with positive feelings and functioning. Helping others, sharing one s skills and resources, and behaviours that promote a sense of purpose and team orientation have been found to help increase self-worth and produce a positive emotional effect.- Five ways to Wellbeing (Mental Health Organisation)
The story of Ms Wellington has been created by teachers exploring a range of Wellbeing Models, with a focus on Positive Psychology, and interpreting different aspects as actions. Each page depicts an action or choice made which will help the character to realise her potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and be able to make a positive contribution to the school learning community. We believe that the actions of the character will provide a framework which will enable individuals to flourish.
Other Evaluation We developed our own evaluation tool which was in the form of self reflection leading to personal responsibility and helping others to help themselves. From that survey the staff worked together to develop a wellbeing toolkit. Staffroom Development for wellbeing.
