3 Get to Know Your Athletes What do they want from their coach? How do they want to be treated? What motivates them? What are their goals? They typically prefer a coach that will get to know them as individuals. Get to know what type of personality they have. NEVER treat everyone the same. All people are different and should be treated differently. 3

4 The Significance of Gender Female athletes see themselves as athletes first and women second. Female athletes want to be pushed as hard as males. Women are just as competitive as men. Understand women can sometimes be more emotional and you may have to change how you communicate with them. Women are more inquisitive. 4

7 Communication Team/Group: Negative feedback, when given too much lowers selfesteem and de-motivates the athlete. Positive feedback, constructive criticism combined with organized, fun, challenging situations will build self-confidence. Let your leaders and players be involved in decision making (sense of ownership). 7

8 Communication Team/Group: Do not discourage social banter, allow time for it. Remember communication is verbal and non-verbal. When critiquing the team as a whole, some women take it personally while some males think the coach is talking about someone else. 8

9 Communication Individual: Male athletes- Respect alone will sometimes be enough, if hard work will result in individual gain they will do it whether they like you or not. Female athletes- A connection with the coach is almost necessary for them to buy in. A female that understands what you want will work extremely hard for you, especially if it is for the benefit of the team. Sandwich method: something positive followed by what was done, what should have been done, and why it is done, finish with a positive. Try and connect with each player once a week. 9

10 Coachability Coach us like men, treat us like women Mia Hamm The level to which a player is committed to their own development, hungry for feedback from others, and open to anything that may improve them as an athlete. 10

11 Coachability Females tend to be more coachable than males and more open to trying new things if they think it will make them better. Females usually underestimate their ability. Males tend to think they are better than they are and therefore are less coachable. Females give their coaches initial respect. Males usually make their coach earn it. Females are more willing to express their gratitude toward their coach and are more willing to try and please a coach. Females tend to ask why. Not to be disrespectful but because they want to know. 11

12 Coachability 4 Levels 1. Not Not willing to try new things or do what the coaches ask. 2. Selectively Will do what coaches ask only when they agree with it. 3. Reluctantly Will do whatever the coaches say whether they agree or not. 4. Completely Have full trust in the coaches and know they have the teams best interest in mind. 12

13 Team Chemistry For Women, Sport is as much a social activity as it is a competitive one Kathy Deboer 13

14 Team Chemistry What is it? It is an intangible quality that allows team to become a cohesive unit enabling them to achieve more collectively as a whole then they could as a bunch of individuals. How do we achieve it? 1. Setting expectations/goals (Mission Statement) 2. Make new team members feel like part of the group 3. Encourage team building (with just team and including coaches) 14

15 Team Chemistry - Females See everyone as equally important to the teams success. More receptive to coaching that emphasizes team effort and collective rewards. Relationships are sometimes more important than winning. It is a major criteria when determining the quality of their experience. Without some sort of chemistry it is difficult to be successful. 15

16 Team Chemistry - Males Operate within a hierarchy. This is determined by age, athletic prowess and success. More open to individual praise if it can increase their position within the hierarchy. Would rather have good team chemistry but not necessary for success. (Chicago Bulls championship teams of 90 s). 16

17 Team Chemistry What do we do when we start to lose the chemistry? 1. Restate expectations and goals. 2. Team building activities. 3. Acts of selflessness by players/coaches. 4. Re-open communication lines 17
