In addition, he is focused on clarifying the effects of social injustice on families, the influence on therapists of the distinctions they make regarding their clients, and on explicating the possible therapeutic and counter therapeutic effects of the interviewing process itself.
3 TRAINING TOPICS FAMILY THERAPY TRAINING TOPICS This two day training seminar aims to provide the astute clinician a solid foundation in learning systemic work with a variety of clients beginning with assessment to intervention and application in different therapeutic situations. ASSESSMENT Patterns of Interpersonal Interaction that Influence Mental Health In Patterns of Interpersonal Interaction that Influence Mental Health, Dr. Tomm will be presenting the foundation of systemic work, i.e. learning to identify and clarify the patterns of interactions between clients and significant others which contribute to specific experiences and behaviours. He will elaborate on his model of systemic assessment which is less pathological in approach and refined over the years through his deep experience working with clients. INTERVENTION Interventive Interviewing and Reflexive Questioning Expand the Interventive Interviewing Framework with Contextual Questions and Meta-Questions Dr. Tomm will offer a new perspective on the therapeutic interview process, elaborating on his classifications of questions and clarifying how questions can be used to open space for therapeutic possibilities. Through Interventive Interviewing and Reflexive Questioning and Expanding the Interventive Interviewing Framework with Contextual Questions and Meta-Questions, he will demonstrate how his internationally renowned work can be applied in the therapeutic interview process to move therapists towards a more generative interviewing style based on socialconstructionist assumptions. ETHICS Alternative Ethical Postures that Therapists Can Adopt in Clinical Decision Making In Alternative Ethical Postures that Therapists Can Adopt in Clinical Decision Making, Dr. Tomm will present his framework of four contrasting ethical postures that support differing patterns of clinical decision-making by therapists. He will also demonstrate easily applicable methods that could be used to guide an individual clinician s work from a preferred ethical stance and enhances mindfulness in the practitioner.
4 TRAINING TOPICS SPECIAL ISSUES Interviewing the Internalized Others For the therapist who prefers to work with individuals systemically, Dr. Tomm elaborates on a specific therapeutic technique called "Interviewing the Internalized Other, in which he will illustrate how an interpersonal systemic approach can have beneficial effects for an individual client, their relationships and significant others. Deconstructing Shame and Guilt, and Opening Space for Apology, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation Dr. Tomm s approach to "Deconstructing Shame and Guilt, and Opening Space for Apology, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation enables the discerning clinician to understand the different pathways involved in deconstructing shame as opposed to deconstructing guilt. He elaborates on the kinds of awareness needed to family members to commence restorative action as well as exploring the nature of forgiveness and its therapeutic potential for all parties involved. Systemic Therapy for Couples where One Partner has a Mental Illness Dr. Tomm s presentation on Systemic Therapy for Couples where One Partner has a Mental Illness showcases his unique approach to working with such couples, including intervening at the biological, the psychological, and the social level focusing on the interpersonal/social level to explicate some problematic dynamics in these couples relationships.
