Massey, PhD Credits Hours: 4 Office: TBD Location: CGS 115 Phone: Time: Wednesday 5pm wmassey@carrollu.edu Prerequisite: Graduate Student Status Office Hours: Monday Wednesday 3-5 Friday Times and Locations: TBD Course description This course is designed to provide an introduction to the theoretical constructs and empirical research that inform psychological aspects of sport and exercise. Emphases will involve (a) the psychological factors that affect individual and group behavior in sport and exercise contexts, (b) the impact of sport and exercise participation on psychological functioning, and (c) the application of theory and research to various professional practice settings. Required text Cox, R.H. (2007). Sport Psychology: Concepts and Applications (6 th Edition). McGraw Hill: New York, NY Course goals Upon completion of the course students should be able to: 1. Critically examine research methods in exercise and sport psychology. 2. Identify and understand psychological factors that influence individual behavior in sport & exercise environments. 3. Identify and understand psychological factors that influence group behavior in sport & exercise environments. 4. Identify and explain theories and techniques of appropriate leadership styles in working with athletes. 5. Identify and explain coaching behaviors that enhance and detract from the psychological experience of the athlete. 6. Develop the ability to translate sport and exercise psychology literature into applications for professional practice. Course requirements Class participation/professionalism (50 points) Midterm (75 points) Men s Health/Women s Health Article (50 points) S&C Journal Column (50 points) Coaching behavior assessment research paper (100 points) Choice of (100 points): o Literature Review/Research Proposal o Teach a class o Final Exam

2 Evaluation of Students Men s Health/Women s Health Article (50 points) For this assignment, you are to pick a topic related to strength training that discusses either confidence or motivation and write an article for Men s or Women s Health Magazine. While the article should incorporate sound psychology principles and theory, it should be communicated to a lay audience. The article should provide practical solutions to common problems seen in strength training. The article must be between words. Please appropriately cite (APA style 6 th edition) any resources used. Strength and Conditioning Journal Column (50 points) For this assignment, you are to pick a column in the Strength and Conditioning Journal you would like to write an article for that is related to a topic in the psychology of sport. Instructions can be found here: While the posted word limit is words, please limit your articles to words. Please appropriately cite (APA style 6 th edition) any resources used. Coaching Observation (100 points) Select a sport coach or strength coach to observe in a group practice setting (the individual should be working with four or more individuals during your observation period). If necessary, explain to the coach that you need to observe a group or a team for a university class you re taking. Arrange with him or her a date and time to observe an entire practice session. You cannot observe someone from the team/sport that you currently work with. During this session you ll code his or her behavior for at least minutes. Then you will write a 6-8 page paper that will include (a) a brief introduction to the topic of coaching behavior, (b) a summary of your observational results, (c) a critical analysis of the coaches behavior as compared to the research literature, and (d) suggestions for improvements based on the research literature. A coding sheet will be provided. Please appropriately cite (APA style 6 th edition) any resources used. Research Proposal (100 points) This option involves proposing a research study to be conducted with a sport or exercise population. Although there are four steps common to any research paper (i.e., Review of Literature, Methods, Results, and Discussion), a proposal would only include the first two, because no data need be collected. Approximate length = 15 pages. At least 20 academic sources needed. Further details will be provided to anyone completing this assignment. If you choose to complete this assignment you need to have a topic approved by Dr. Massey no later than the eighth week of the semester. Class Presentation/Lecture (100 points) The class presentation will consist of a lecture on a particular topic of interest and relevance. Typically, class presentations are on specialized topics of relevance to sport and exercise psychology that may not be covered in class (e.g., psychological issues related to retirement from sport; exercise behavior in elderly populations). Approximate length of presentation will be minutes. Outline of presentation and audiovisual props are required. If you choose to complete the class presentation, you need to have a topic approved by Dr. Massey no later than the eighth week of the semester. Grading Scheme A = AB= B = BC= C = D = F = Below

To improve the quality of help that can be provided during scheduled office hours, I ask that you come prepared with a list of specific questions that you have. If you have questions about an assignment, I will NOT pre-grade it, but am willing to scan your draft and try to help you identify if there are any missing components, etc. In addition, class time will not be used to discuss grades or individual circumstances. These issues should be discussed during scheduled office hours. Student conduct in the classroom: Any activity that interferes with an instructor or faculty member s ability to teach is unacceptable. These behaviors may include, but are not limited to, disrespectful language or behavior, disruptive/distracting behavior that interferes with a positive learning environment, reading or working on materials (print or Internet) not applicable to the current course topic/discussion and sleeping in class. Use of cell phones in class is NOT permitted. 3
