Preventing Doping in Sport: Increasing Coaches Confidence for Doping Confrontation (Development of a Coaching Workshop to Increase Confidence in Anti-Doping Confrontations ) Kaitlyn LaForge-MacKenzie, PhD (c) & Philip Sullivan, PhD Department of Kinesiology, Brock University Research supported by the Social Science Research Grant Program of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)
Preventing Doping in Sport Coaches are mechanisms for changing both beliefs and behaviours of athletes in sport (Horn, 2008; Lyle, 1999) Involved in the daily training and hold a position of authority Anti-doping interventions generally target coaches as a means to change doping behaviours (Backhouse & McKenna, 2012; Laure, Thouvenin, & Lecerf, 2001) Coaches acknowledge role in preventing doping Ineffective doping prevention measures Role is unclear and problematic (Backhouse & McKenna, 2012)
Preventing Doping in Sport Corcoran and Feltz (1993) Evaluation of the Chemical Health Education and Coaching program, designed to educate coaches on chemical health awareness Three 1-hour sessions covered various content including why athletes use chemicals, athlete pressures to use, signs of chemical-use, coaches role in prevention, and confrontation techniques Increased self-efficacy in knowledge and abilities regarding athletes chemical drug-use Coaches lacked self-efficacy to actually confront athletes 3
Social Confrontation Model (Newell & Stutman, 1988, 1991) Initiation (Purpose) Development (Definition) Closure (Solution)
Key Elements of the SCM Intimacy The relationship between the confronter and confrontee Legitimacy Whether the confrontee violated a rule; whether rule was relevant Potential Outcomes Whether the relationship between the confronter and the confrontee will be affected Personal Resources The confronter s time, energy, and information Influence whether the confronter will initiate the episode and how the interaction will occur 5
Doping Confrontation Efficacy Scale (DCES) DCES (Sullivan, Feltz, LaForge-MacKenzie, & Hwang, 2013) developed based on Newell & Stutman s (1991) SCM Five-factors (21 items) Initiation Intimacy Legitimacy Potential Outcomes Personal Resources Stem: As a coach, how confident are you in your ability to 7-point Likert scale 1(no confidence) to 7 (complete confidence)
Purpose To design a coaching workshop to enhance coaches confidence in confronting athletes regarding doping behaviours based on five key elements: legitimacy, intimacy, personal resources, initiation, and potential outcomes.
Participants Six male coaches Football Coach youth athletes (high-school) Age: 39 years Coaching experience: 12 seasons Hours per week of coaching: 13.5 hours Coaching certification: 5 of 6 coaches
Workshop Four-hour workshop consisting of: An introduction to WADA Including an introduction to doping and anti-doping rule violations Four modules Part 1: Content of confrontation issue Part 2: Relationship with the person you are confronting Part 3: Creating and initiating a confrontation game plan Part 4: Confrontation closure and assessment Review and summary
Workshop Activities focused on promoting: Reflection Awareness Collaboration Peer- and self-assessment Consisted of: Individual activities Pair and small-group activities Large-group discussions Role-play scenarios
Examples of Workshop Content Key suggestion from Corcoron and Feltz s (1993) study was a focus on role-playing (i.e., active learning experiences ) Provides mastery experiences E.g., Activity 13: Initiating the Confrontation Coach confronts athlete about a possible anti-doping behavior (choose one of the following topics): One of your high school athletes has come to practice on more than one occasion smelling like marijuana You notice that the strength of one of your athletes has increased far beyond expected training effects in the last few months Observer assesses coach s approach with observational tool Reflection of what each participant learned from situation
Results: Intimacy & Legitimacy Pre Post Pre Post Intimacy Legitimacy 12
Results: Initiation & Potential Outcomes Pre Post Pre Post Initiation Outcomes 13
Results: Personal Resources Pre Post Resources 14
Conclusions Coaches increased in efficacy in all five aspects of confronting athletes whom they suspect of doping Positive feedback from coaches including the suggestion that confronting athletes regarding doping practices should be a necessary addition to their training Specifically for their sport (i.e., football)
Implications The workshop has potential to increase coaches confidence to confront athletes who may be participating in doping activities The workshop does not focus on the knowledge to prevent doping, it aids aspects that coaches have previously reported they were lacking (i.e., Corcoran & Feltz, 1993) As coaches have the ability to enact changes in their athletes behaviours, by increasing coaches confidence to confront athletes, coaches are more likely to prevent doping practices
Future Directions Follow-up evaluations of coaches to assess in-season retention of doping confrontation efficacy Examine whether doping confrontation efficacy is related to coach and athletes outcomes including: Coach behaviours Coach motivation orientation Athlete doping attitudes Athlete behaviours
