Critical Mass Analysis Greetings Welcome to this presentation entitled Critical Mass Analysis. I d like to introduce you to, or perhaps even more so, orient you to, the concept I m approaching in this presentation by referring to a slang expression; gone viral as sometimes applied to videos, products, or fashion trends. In other words, something s caught on and it s caught on in a big way. Viral phenomena are objects or patterns able to replicate themselves or convert other objects into copies of themselves when these objects are exposed to them. I want to focus for a moment on the word convert in this operational definition, referring back to something I shared in the 1 st presentation. If what we become aware of influences our actions, our behaviors, then in some respect we embody that knowledge, information, or wisdom. This is a form of a conversion. We have been converted from one view or mindset to another, or we have been converted from utilizing or consuming one product to another, or perhaps we have been converted from engaging in one behavior to another. As a result, whether or not we are aware of it, we form a kinship with others who have also been converted. I ll be citing this kinship later on as a basis of authority. See If an individual accepts my invitation to attempt to falsify the claims I make, then by their own experimentation, observations, and experiences they can verify for themselves the validity of the claims I make. This is the most powerful conversion factor available to me as someone who wishes to share and to the participant as someone who can benefit from an expanded awareness of this knowledge, understanding and wisdom. The emphasis is thus on falsification, not verification. A powerful theory is one that is highly vulnerable to of known or unknown origin are italicized and enclosed in quotation marks. 1
falsification, and so can be tested in many detailed and specific ways. Again, referring back to the 1 st presentation and a quote I shared with you that helped me to clarify what I was interested in doing and understand how to approach getting it done. His true ambition, and a lofty one it must be counted, was to affect the course of events by affecting the course of thought. So if an individual wishes to influence the course of events, then they must find a way to influence the course of thought, hence my interest in the concept of conversion. The type of critical mass that is related to this kind of conversion is defined as: Critical Mass is a sociodynamic term to describe the existence of sufficient momentum in a social system such that the momentum becomes self-sustaining and fuels further growth. This term refers to something that builds excitement, and can be thought of as an excitation that travels as a wave. It gains momentum, and becomes reinforced by individuals who wish to ride the wave. We can become caught up in the moment and easily moved in the direction of our dreams! # - Referring to The Tipping Point by Malcome Gladwell During the following segments, I ll be referring to a body of works, a perspective that Malcome Gladwell published in his book The Tipping Point. The book seeks to explain social epidemics or sudden and often chaotic changes from one state or condition to another. They are similar, in their mathematical properties, to disease epidemics. The ability to generate these epidemics is highly of known or unknown origin are italicized and enclosed in quotation marks. 2
sought after in marketing and is often referred to as something that has gone viral. At this point, I d like to share my perspective of three concepts Gladwell coined in his works and how they relate to my philosophical system. The Stickiness Factor This is when the impact of the message imparts excitation. It can be similar to a wave of excitement or a movement, especially among our inner circle of family or friends. This conversion can become self-sustaining and what may begin as an external influence or pressure for change can become converted to an internal desire. Therefore, the message and the movement can become reinforced and therefore gain momentum. The Law of the Few This concept is similar to what I referred to in the Immense Production as the Choice of 1 st Magnitude, the choice between many bit parts or fewer central roles. This is the most basic of choices an individual makes during their presence. It is these few who choose to become active participants and impact the course of thought and thereby the course of events that have the greatest influence on the state of human affairs we refer to as reality. By acting as a beacon to others they serve as a catalyst or stimulus in bringing about or hastening a result. This impact is what I term a catalytic conversion. The Power of Context This is similar to what I am attempting to identify by the term Frame of Reference. This is an accounting of the many factors or elements in play. These factors vary from environment vs. perspective; external forces, pressures, or conditions vs. internal desires or personal preferences, which relates to what sparks an interest and therefore the Stickiness Factor. While all the possible factors play a role and influence the choices we actively or passively make, there is one fact that I am certain of, Choice trumps all other factors! of known or unknown origin are italicized and enclosed in quotation marks. 3
This leads into another 3 step. First We Get Stirred Up! A Popeye Moment! - That s all I can stands, I can t stands no more! Life s adventures and misadventures provide the continuous successive application of the necessary stimulus. This is in the form of feedback through our experimentation, observations, and experiences. What may have been a chronic condition of bearable discomfort becomes intensified to an acute level requiring immediate and decisive action. This is what I term the facilitation threshold. This is the point at which a stimulus begins to produce a response or reaction. It can also represent a moment of awakening awareness, a moment when a distinction or difference in value is recognized and the gap between the current state or condition and the potential state or condition becomes evident. I have observed a mirror relationship between physics and human nature. In physics, it is the nature of particles to satisfy the lowest state of energy. This state or condition is referred to as the rest state. With regard to human nature, we get stirred up, we realize we have some work to do, some personal growth and development to cultivate. Once this work is engaged and performed, we are able to return to a state of rest in which we embody the results of our growth and development and incorporate these results in the quality of experiences we radiate into the world around us. We can become radiant, acting as a beacon to others, and thereby have impact on The Course of Thought In this segment of the presentation I will expand on the reference I made to the works published by Malcome Gladwell in his book The Tipping Point. of known or unknown origin are italicized and enclosed in quotation marks. 4
Once we get stirred up, it becomes a question of what, if anything, are we going to do about it. Are we one of which the Law of the Few refers to? # - The Law of the Few Cited from: The Tipping Point Before I share with you the three primary roles Malcome Gladwell identified in his works, I wish to share a few personal insights. First up there is the matter of the Choice of 1 st Magnitude Bit Part vs. Central Role. This is, in my view, the primary choice and trumps all other factors. Secondly, I wish for you to think of this as a Heroic Call to Action. I invite you to become fully aware of the relationship that is necessary for the act of sharing to have any lasting impact and meaning. I think this is expressed beautifully in this exchange: You cared enough to share the truth. You had courage enough to listen. Thirdly, it has been my observation that: Many know what to do. Few do what they know. As I stated on my home page, It s not that I know more than others, It s that I ignore less. The potential value of this ignore less concept is best related through examples of when signs and indicators have been ignored as with the events leading up to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the Challenger shuttle disaster. In each case, there were opportunities to detect that something was amiss. And whatever facts and observations are shared or not and therefore become known or remain unknown, the key is to ignore less. of known or unknown origin are italicized and enclosed in quotation marks. 5
In addition, there is little if any practical value in just knowing. The act of sharing and the fact of knowing represent potential value only. The true or actual value is inherent in doing something with what you know. In his book The Tipping Point, Gladwell identified 3 primary roles of The Law of the Few. Connectors Those with wide social circles are the hubs of the human social network and they are responsible for the small world phenomenon. Six degrees of separation doesn t mean that everyone is linked to everyone else in just six steps. It means that a very small number of people are linked to everyone else in a few steps, and the rest of us are linked to the world through those special few. Mavens are individuals who are knowledgeable, however, the critical thing about mavens is that they are not passive collectors of information. What sets them apart is that once they figure out the true value of the information, they want to share it with others. They like to initiate discussions and they ll respond to requests for additional information. Mavens want to be helpful and this can be an effective way of gaining someone s attention. Salesman embody the skills to persuade us when we are unconvinced of what we are hearing, and they are as critical to the tipping of word-of-mouth epidemics as the other two groups. They exert soft influence, the source of which may be the tendency of others, subconsciously, to imitate them and harmonize with them. This reminds me of the saying: Imitation is the highest form of compliment. In his book The Tipping Point, Gladwell also makes reference to The Power of Translation. of known or unknown origin are italicized and enclosed in quotation marks. 6
This is the most important role those who I refer to as playing a central role can serve. Through their gifts, their talents and abilities, they are able to put information into simpler terms. They explain or interpret the information, the message, into different words and thereby retransmit the message in a way that others can more easily relate to it and comprehend the potential value of the information being shared. In the act of broadcasting seeds of information, the few act as a catalyst in converting the information, which is a consumable, into a durable in the form of knowledge, understanding, or wisdom. To further explain the impact on the Course of Thought, Gladwell refers to The Diffusion Model. The diffusion model is a detailed, academic way of looking at how a contagious idea, product, or innovation moves through a population. The Bell Curve of Diffusion, which is the rate of change or conversion, is captured in the following categories of participants: Innovators, these are the risk takers, the adventurous ones. They are the first to experiment and experience. Early Adopters are those who adopt based on early observations of results. The Early Majority and the Late Majority represent the deliberate and skeptical mass, who would never try anything until the most respected of participants had tried it first, and finally the Laggards, the most traditional of all, who see no urgent reason to change. And thus is the Course of Thought of the human species. Some being more inclined to be open to new ideas or innovations, while others are much more hesitant, watching and waiting, allowing others to be more daring and adventurous, choosing the path only when it has become well-worn or even paved. Thereby, leading us down the path we travel, or The Course of Events of known or unknown origin are italicized and enclosed in quotation marks. 7
In this segment I will be very loosely referring to a concept Gladwell coined as The Strength of Weak Ties. I refer to my tact on this concept as; Loose Associations Close Connections. See We re inclined to focus on individuality, what makes us unique or different from others, rather than on commonality, what binds us together in a shared experience. We seem quick to point out what makes our perspective unique, but slower to identify what we share in common with others and unites us in a kinship. This brings me to the primary concept of this segment, Mass Action = Mass Effect. If we are guided in our actions by common values, even if we don t share the same vision, we will simultaneously exhibit similar behaviors individually and without coordination. This is where the concept of Loose Associations Close Connections comes into play. While our association with each other may be so distant as to be dismissed as non-existent, we are bound closely together by our shared values that we uphold and support. This is a source of collective authority that wields its power to influence the course of events with intensity equal only to its anonymity, unlike special interest groups like lobbyists whose methods and source of influence are easier to identify. These shared values, and their inherent power to influence the course of events, is what I am referring to with the term Mass Action = Mass Effect. In addition to the power to influence course corrections that contribute to emergent systems, these close connections become the foundation of a shared rally point. of known or unknown origin are italicized and enclosed in quotation marks. 8
