10 What is Coaching? Coaching vs Therapy THERAPY OBJECTIVE: Help a student deal with personal problems & issues that need to be analyzed and solved. Therapy is about reflecting on the person s past and seeking the cause or root of the problem. Therapy assumes that the person has a problem, or mental illness and is based on a disease model. COACHING OBJECTIVE: Assists a student in formulating what his or her life intentions are, uncovering deep beliefs which might be barriers to his or her positive movement and to move forward successfully. Coaching assumes that a person is lacking a skill to move out of a comfort zone.
