SW 640: Introduction to Scientific Methods and Principles in Social Work 1. Critically evaluate and utilize research, including evidence-based practice studies, as they relate to social work practice. 2. Understand the importance of including diverse populations in studies (e.g., people of color, women, racial/ethnic groups, low SES, LGBT, etc.) and identify biases in research design and measurement. 3. Apply the appropriate research design given contextual factors. 4. Be able to apply appropriate research ethics in conducting research in order to protect participants in the community consistent with social work values/ethics and IRB guidelines. SW 650: Research Designs and Data Analyses for the Evaluation of Practice Effectiveness

Critically examine theoretical frameworks about life span development and human diversity and how these guide and inform social work assessment, intervention and evaluation processes. (EPAS 2.1.7) 2. Gain insight into personal values, life span development and participation in families, groups, organizations and communities and how these inform professional use of self and ethical standards of practice. (EPAS 2.1.1, 2.1.2) 3. Be aware of oppression and social injustices inflicted upon the marginalized and oppressed communities social workers serve. Those at-risk are specifically targeted with an emphasis on Hawai i and Asia Pacific populations. (EPAS 2.1.4, 2.1.5) SW 690/691: Foundation-Year Practicum 1. Demonstrate understanding of agency s mission, goals, organizational structure, and funding; and how the agency s policies and procedures impact the services provided. (EP2.1.8) 2. Apply the basic social work process skills (intake/data gathering, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, termination) with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. (EP2.1.10) 3. Demonstrate beginning level interviewing skills (attending behavior, open/closed questions, client observation, summarization, paraphrasing, reflection of feelings). (EP2.1.10) 4. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to evaluate, select, and implement appropriate assessment, intervention, and evaluation tools that are culturally sensitive in serving children and families involved in various systems (i.e., child welfare, juvenile justice, school). SW 718: Seminar in Social Work Practice with Children and Families 1. Demonstrate knowledge on interventions utilized in settings serving children and families with attention to theoretical framework, supporting evidence, applicability in diverse context and people, and cultural relevance. 2. Constant engagement in the process of self-awareness to assess personal biases and values in working with populations and cultures different from own. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of oppression, discrimination, and historical trauma on children and their families to guide treatment planning and intervention. 4. Synthesize information on the best available evidence on an intervention/ practice/ tool, worker s competence to use the intervention/practice/tool information, and the child and family s context and values to determine the appropriateness of the practice for the client and client system. SW 722: Social Work Practice in Health Care 1. Describe social work ethical principles in the context of health practice and apply a decision-making model to ethical dilemmas involving bio-medical, psychosocial/spiritual, diverse social statuses, and relevant legal and organizational issues. Suggested activity: CLEAR (Critical Learning, Explication, And Reflection) paper (students are provided with CLEAR rubric and specific criteria for grading) 2. Demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based and exemplary practice models for use in health social work intervention with diverse individuals, families, small groups, communities, and organizations. Suggested activities: CLEAR paper, individual/small group presentations of practice model, with emphasis on skill development
4 3. Analyze case-based scenarios, with demonstrated integration of multiple sources of knowledge, including research-based knowledge, practice wisdom, and personal reflection. Suggested activities: CLEAR paper, course capstone of poster display (application of practice model to case) and class presentation. To prepare students for capstone, sequenced activities are recommended. 4. Demonstrate understanding of the mechanisms of oppression and discrimination, as reflected in health and disease outcomes, with specific attention to the role of social workers in decreasing disparities experienced by Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and groups disadvantaged by social and economic health determinants. Suggested activities: CLEAR paper, small group dramatizations SW 723: Seminar in Social Work Practice in Health Care 1. Apply evidence-based and exemplary practice models to health social work intervention, with attention to extending all phases of the Generalist Intervention Model to specific health/behavioral health conditions and diverse health services consumers across the life span and across the spectrum of wellness, disease, and death/dying. Suggested activities: CLEAR paper 2. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of principles and apply strategies and techniques from evidencebased and exemplary practice models to cases provided by the instructor and to cases from student s practice. Suggested activities: CLEAR paper, individual/small group presentations of practice model, with discussion for application in other types of cases and with emphasis on skill development 3. Synthesize understanding of evidence-based and exemplary program practice models, ethical issues, reasoned discernment, and personal reflection to case-based applications of health practice with individuals, families, small groups, communities, and organizations, with an emphasis on role of the social worker in eliminating health disparities. Suggested activities: CLEAR paper, small group dramatizations, group projects in the community 4. Appraise key learning from the health concentration courses and practicum and compile tool kit with resources for use in entry-level health social work practice. Suggested activities: student learning logs (personal reflection), capstone activity might include compilation of tool kit with presentation to seminar; to prepare students for capstone, sequenced activities are recommended SW 724: Social Work Practice in Behavioral Mental Health 1. Analyze ethical dilemmas and apply principles of ethical social work in behavioral health practice. 2. Recognize how self-awareness, transference and counter-transference impact helping relationships and service delivery. 3. Identify clinical presentation, prognosis, etiology, research-based treatments, & culturally-based interventions for a range of Axis I clinical disorders of the DSM-IV-TR. 4. Apply Motivational Interviewing approaches in client assessment. 5. Formulate and develop client-centered, recovery-based assessment, and evaluation plan (identifying biopsycho-social, cultural and spiritual strengths, and applying culturally relevant, evidence-based, best practices), and including the mental status examination and multi-axial diagnosis. SW 725: Seminar in Social Work Practice in Behavioral Mental Health 1. Analyze current national behavioral-mental health policies (New Freedom Commission Report) and current challenges.
5 2. Analyze and explain several indigenous or culturally resonant, evidence-based or promising best-practice treatment modalities for application in behavioral-mental health. 3. Research and identify community-based and culturally relevant recovery services for consumers (children and adults), which actively support recovery principles and reintegration into communities. 4. Formulate and produce the capstone project (portfolio), demonstrating students engagement and application of behavioral mental health concentration curriculum. SW 726: Social Work Practice with the Aged 1. Understand and analyze demographic characteristics of the aging population in Hawai i and the United States to identify emerging social welfare concerns and understand the existing formal social service network for them. 2. Identify and critique major social, biological, psychological, behavioral, and cultural theories and frameworks used to explain the aging processes within the individual, and its impact on the family, community, and larger society. 3. Describe, critique, and apply knowledge on the major psychosocial issues, problems, disorders in later life, and those evidence-based practices that can improve quality of life for older adults and their families. SW 727: Seminar in Social Work with the Aged 1. Apply knowledge of older adult and family life cycle developmental issues, problems, and disorders in later life to student's case issues. 2. Perform an accurate geriatric assessment of an older adult and his/her family, using tools and skills previously learned in SW 726 and those which are newly learned. 3. Demonstrate their knowledge of advanced social work practice for a range of issues and problems encountered by older adults and their families within the context of larger social systems in Hawai i and the nation and apply interventions that are appropriate for problem prevention and resolution.
