1 Building Self-Confidence and Enhancing Job Performance Presented by Jen Strobel, SPHR Director of Human Resources & Branch Management, Flagger Force October 2, 2014 Agenda Review concepts of motivation, confidence, courage, selfesteem and doubt. Review statistics demonstrating importance of self-confidence. Discuss influencing factors of confidence Determine personal confidence level Examine ways to improve personal confidence How to identify confidence in others and assist in their development Webster says. Motivation A force or influence that causes someone to do something Confidence A feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something Courage The mental or moral strength to venture, persevere and withstand danger, fear or difficulty Self-esteem A feeling of having respect for yourself and your abilities Doubt To be uncertain about something, to believe that something may not be true or is unlikely 1
2 Does it matter? Evidence shows that women are less self-assured than men and that to succeed, confidence matters as much as competence. Biology Larger anterior cingulate cortex brain portion which helps us recognize errors and consider options More active amygdalae response to negative emotional stimuli Estrogen encourages bonding and connection, discourages conflict and risk taking Societal Girls more easily socialized Praise for being perfect Neatly & quietly, miss opportunity to learn to handle negative responses, boys become more resilient Not as many girls in sports own victory and surviving defeat Contributing Factors cont. 4 Preparing for your journey Take your personal inventory to create self awareness and determine your goals or intended outcome Self Doubt Inventory What do I doubt about myself? Why do I doubt myself? When do I doubt myself? What triggers my emotional response? Why, why, why??? Self Esteem Inventory What do I like about myself? Why do I like that about myself? What do I do well? When am I the most proud of myself? What else? What else? What else? 4
5 Hit the Road Starting small builds momentum What are your strengths? Celebrate success small wins count What have you achieved? Growth & learning comes from failure What is your level of commitment? Stretch Your Comfort Zones Grow your box Set goals Try something new Try, try, try and try again The natural result of low confidence is inaction. When women don t act, when we hesitate because we aren t sure, we hold ourselves back. But when we do act, even if it s because we re forced to, we perform just as well as men do. - The Confidence Gap Get Over Yourself (and out of your own way) Remember, if you take away the failure you take away the opportunity to learn. It s not all about you. You gain by reframing your thoughts. Shift your focus to what you appreciate about others. It s all about your mindset 5
