2 Emotional Freedom Technique What is EFT? It is a universal healing tool that can provide impressive results..it s similar to acupuncture, except without the needles Gary Craig With what types of issues can EFT be used? Physical symptoms, emotional distress, and self-limiting thoughts and behaviors What is the EFT Discovery Statement? The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body s energy system. Gary Craig How does EFT work? Energy flows through the body along networks or channels. Meridian points along this path are those points where this body energy can be accessed. In times of stress or crisis energy flow gets disrupted. These disruptions can cause someone to get stuck in survivor mode, limiting his/her ability to fully process the event. By tapping on these meridian points, the body and mind are restored to their original state of calm and balance. Is EFT easy to learn? Yes! The EFT Tapping Basic Recipe has only 5 brief steps (ingredients) and takes very little effort to learn. Once memorized, each round of it can be performed in about 30 seconds. It will take some practice, of course, but after a few tries the whole process becomes familiar and you can do it in your sleep (millions have done this, including children). You will then have a permanent tool that you can use for a lifetime. Gary Craig
3 Basic Recipe for the EFT Process 1) Identify the emotional, physical or performance issue you want to address. Stick with one issue at a time! Resolve one aspect before moving on to another one. 2) Test the Initial Intensity of the issue on a 0 10 scale with a 0 value meaning the disturbance is completely resolved and has no negative charge, and a 10 value meaning the worst possible level of disturbance is present. The most positive effects from the tapping come when you can experientially recreate the disturbance as you prepare to begin tapping. For an emotional issue, in your mind capture the memory that triggers the identified emotion. For physical issues, focus on the current pain or symptom. For performance issues, act out the activity in question. For any of these types of issues, as you are reexperiencing the targeted disturbance, rate the initial intensity. 3) Setup the tapping process by choosing a phrase that depicts the key issue. You will repeat this phrase several times while tapping on the KC position (see hand diagram). The purpose of this setup phase is two-fold. First, it helps you to pinpoint and own the problem you are addressing. Second, it allows you to express your unconditional acceptance of yourself for having the problem. This self-acceptance diminishes the possibility of the process being sabotaged by self-judgment. The template used for this phrase follows this format: Even though I have this, I deeply and completely accept myself. Not all phrases can fit exactly into this template pattern without sounding awkward grammatically, so some flexibility in wording is acceptable here. Remember: identify your problem, not a situation, thought or feeling that belongs to someone else
4 The language that we use always aims at the negative. This is essential because it is the negative that creates the energy disruptions (zzzzzts) that The EFT Tapping Basic Recipe clears (and thus brings peace to the system. (Gary Craig) 4) The Sequence is the phase where the core tapping work takes place. It is here that the body s energy pathways are stimulated and balanced. (Gary Craig) Follow the order as designated below and tap 5-7 times on each of these meridian points. Top of the Head (TOH) Beginning of Eyebrow/ Over the Eye (OE) Side of the Eye (SE) Under the Eye (UE) Under the Nose (UN) Chin Point (CH) Beginning of the Collarbone (CB) Under the Arm (UA) A reminder phrase is repeated throughout the tapping on these points to help you stay focused on the issue. Examples: this feeling of, this pain in my, this struggle to (do) 5) Test again the intensity level of the disturbance using the same experiential methods as before. Compare this number with the number assessed at the beginning of the process. This helps you measure your progress. Repeat the tapping process until the level of disturbance number decreases to 0.
