3 About the Program The Master of Science in Sport Management is designed by UF s expert faculty to reflect the latest advances in the field of sport, presenting an equally theoretical and practical approach to skills and knowledge critical to success in the industry. The program can help you develop your leadership abilities and administrative proficiency with an eye towards sport management, aiding the development of a specialized and comprehensive skill-set. Upon completing the program, students will be able to competently: Introduce advanced concepts of planning, organizing, leading and evaluating organizational goals to sport organizations Develop financial strategies and evaluate budgets and sources of revenues and expenses relevant to sport organizations Apply fundamental marketing concepts to the sport industry, create marketing plans, evaluate market segments, and predict consumer behavior Explain and judge fundamental legal concepts relevant to tort, contract, and constitutional law, and how they apply to the sport management field Understand the interdisciplinary nature of sport management at an advanced level Explain the internal and external factors that influence and shape sport Use qualitative and quantitative analysis through formal and informal assessment strategies 04 05
4 Curriculum Required Courses (15 credits) The program requires 36 hours of coursework to complete, along with a Capstone Project. SPM 5016 Sport Sociology (3) This course will be taught in a seminar-style manner, with student-led presentations and discussions. Through the reading of journal articles and book chapters, we will utilize sociological concepts, theories, and research to critically examine social issues in sport. SPM 5309 Sport Marketing (3) Through case studies, in-class discussion, and a practical exercise creating a marketing plan for a large, global sport organization (using scenarios provided by the instructor), students perform an in-depth examination of modern marketing techniques for sport professionals. SPM 5506 Sport Finance (3) Research Core (6 credits) HLP 6515 Evaluation Procedures in Health and Human Performance (3) This course consists of two parts theoretical and practical. From the theory perspective, this is an introductory course in descriptive and inferential statistics. The course approaches the abstract concepts in a systematic and logical progression, so that they are easily attainable. The topics include levels of measurement, frequency distributions, measures of central tendency and dispersion, probabilities and normal distribution, sampling distribution of the mean, and confidence intervals, among others. Students will learn the logic of hypothesis testing and have a general understanding of how the statistical procedures t-test, one-way ANOVA, chisquare, correlations and regression work. They will learn how to select an appropriate statistical test for a given research question. This class will equip aspiring sport managers with the skills to enhance their financial decision-making in a management role, applying concepts to the continually evolving landscape of the sports industry. The course will specifically focus on decision-making with respect to financial considerations, with real-world and hypothetical problems based within the sports industry. While this class is geared toward some unique aspects of the field, the skills acquired will help with making decisions in any business platform. SPM 6158 Management and Leadership in Sport (3) In this course, we explore the critical function of leadership in the management of organizations. Building from the academic foundations of industrial psychology, organizational behavior, and organizational theory, we consider the degree to which leadership is of strategic import to organizational operations. We approach the topic from a variety of directions (including classical leadership theory, biographical studies, analyses of contemporary issues of leadership, philosophical debate, and personal experiences) and disciplines (both inside sport and out). In addition to gaining an advanced understanding of leadership theory and practice, students will consider their own approaches to leading organizations. HLP 6535 Research Methods in Health and Human Performance (3) The purpose of this course is to provide graduate students in the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management (TRSM) and related fields with an introductory survey of research methods. Lectures and fieldbased participation prepare the student to understand key components of academic/business research. SPM 6726 Issues in Sport Law (3) This course is designed to introduce students to the legal structures, statutes, case law, and standards that establish legal responsibilities, rights, privileges, and controls related to the field of sport management

Electives (15 credits) Common electives taken include: SPM 6948 Advanced Practicum in Sport Management (1-3; max. 6) Practical experience in sport management with an active sport organization taken any time during the curriculum. Students can fulfill this requirement at a location of their choosing (pending advisor and site approval). SPM 5206 Sport Ethics (3) This course is designed to encourage sport managers to think about the moral and ethical dilemmas typically encountered by managers in the sport industry. The course will better acquaint and refine sport managers understandings of sport relative to issues such as sportsmanship, violence, performance enhancing drugs, race, gender, and media. This will better prepare students to be agents of change within the sport industry to help it strengthen and prosper. This will be accomplished through student discussions, case studies analyses, formal debates, and the development of position papers on particular topics, which will be supplemented with lectures and readings. SPM 6905 International Sport Management (3) This course examines the international sport environment from the perspective of the North American student. Although it will touch on the international aspects of US sport, it will predominantly be treating sport outside the USA. It will provide students with an overview of sport throughout the world, including sports and sport events/competitions, the global sport calendar, governance, key organizations and actors, management, business and financial elements, marketing, key trends and topics, and cultural significance. SPM 6905 Sport Mass Media (3) This course is designed to examine the various forms (print and electronic) of mass media in sport: the evolution of sport mass media, the relationship of sport and mass media, the modes of communication (i.e., press conferences, news releases, interviews) sport managers use to communicate with mass media, the role of sports information specialists, sport administrators management of public relation crises, and the laws and ethics that impact the relationship between sport managers and mass media. SPM 6947 Graduate Internship in Sport Management (3-9; max. 9) Prerequisite: completion of at least 2 semesters (18 credit hours) of course work applicable to sport management. Full-time, practical experience in sport management taken during the 18 hours of the curriculum. Students can complete this requirement with a relevant organization of their choice (pending advisor and site approval). Specialization Athlete Development If you re interested in working directly with athletes to help them successfully balance the demands of their sport with the demands of living a healthy and productive life off the field, the online master s degree in sport management with a specialization in Athlete Development is the right fit for you. Athlete Development is an emerging area of expertise and opportunity. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for positions including director of player engagement, director of player development, director of student-athlete development, and athletic director. This specialization includes 12 credit hours of designated coursework plus 3 advisor-approved credit hours that can be used to satisfy the elective requirement for the M.S. in Sport Management degree program. Athlete Development is designed to meet the academic requirements for certification through the Professional Association of Athlete Development Specialists (PAADS). Drawing from the latest research, you ll gain a basic understanding of the psychological and physiological aspects of athletic performance and acquire advanced knowledge of how to develop a well-rounded athlete off the field. The specialization includes coursework that addresses these facets of athlete support: Financial Literacy Media Literacy Professionalism and Behavior Mental and Emotional Health Athlete Development Courses SPM 5181 Athlete Development (3) Character Development Career Development Transitions This course will provide an overview and study of the main skills utilized by athlete development specialists, including how to manage the intersection of elite athletes and sport media, athlete career development, and the fundamentals of athlete personal finance
6 APK 5404 Sport Psychology (3) The purpose of this course is to provide students with an in-depth examination of various topics in sport psychology that emanate from both the parent discipline of psychology and facets specific to athletics. Of particular importance will be exploration of the theoretical bases of each of the constructs of interest while also critically examining the literature that supports and refutes traditional and contemporary frameworks. Given its science-to-practice orientation, practical examples of how the sport psychology literature informs applied work with athletes and other performers will also be explored. Students will develop a greater appreciation of the scientific foundations of sport psychology, will be prepared to generate meaningful empirical questions and hypotheses in the area, become familiar with the typical protocols used in sport psychology research, and will gain a firm understand the conceptual bases that underlie the practice of sport psychology. At least 2 credit hours from the following courses: SPM 6948 Advanced Practicum in Athlete Development (2) Practical experience in sport management with an active sport organization taken before the final semester. SPM 5936 Athlete Development Seminar Variable Topics (2) Variable topics may include High School Athlete Development, Character Development through Sport, and Athlete Mental Health. APK 6408 Performance Enhancement (3) This course will intimately connect the theory of sport psychology with the dynamic challenges of the practice of applied sport psychology. Topics include personality, assessment, motivation, emotion, attention, self-confidence, mental imagery, ethics, the injured and over-trained athlete, youth sport, group dynamics, and the psychological characteristics of elite athletes. The role of the sports psychologist as part of a performance enhancement team will also be addressed along with appropriate referral strategies. SPM 5936 Sport Science for Athlete Development Specialists (1) This one-hour course is designed for students to build a strong foundation in sport science and athlete human development as Athlete Development Specialist and Practitioners. Through exposure to these components, students will gain knowledge in the fundamental concepts of sport medicine and the treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of athletic injuries; sport psychology and the mental side of sport and human behavior; sport nutrition and the utilization of food substances during physical activity and recovery; motor learning and movement behavior as a result of practice; and sport physiology of how the systems of the body function and adapt before, during, and after exercise. 7 Specialization High Performance Coaching If you re interested in learning how to help athletes achieve optimal athletic performance at the high school, collegiate, or professional levels, the High Performance Coaching (HPC) specialization may be the right fit for you. It is designed to enhance the efficacy of active coaches and to better prepare students for managerial coaching positions or careers in athletic administration. Individuals who will benefit from this training path include those pursuing career trajectories leading to these positions: head coach; associate head coach or coordinator; strength and conditioning coordinator; or sport administrator (working directly with coaching staffs). The High Performance Coaching specialization includes 15 credit hours of coursework that can be used to satisfy the elective requirement for the MS in Sport Management degree program. Courses from this specialization s curriculum may also be taken as individual electives by students not pursuing a specialization. Focusing on both the psychological and physiological elements of athlete performance training, the required courses are designed to offer theoretical and practical insight into creating an effective performance evaluation and development program. Drawing from the latest research, you ll learn to work with athletes to assess their physical and mental abilities and develop programs to foster skill development and enhance performance. You ll also acquire a deeper understanding of how coaches can apply sport management principles to team management. HPC includes coursework that addresses these facets of performance development: Nutrition Energy Systems Physical Training Athlete Fitness Athlete Health and Safety Psychology and Mental Skills Athlete Maturation High Performance Coaching Courses PET 5936 Training High Performance Athletes I (3) This course overviews the theory and practice of sport training methodologies for enhancing the athlete s physiological capacity. Students will gain an understanding of the science behind: how the body adapts to a training stimulus; principles of training theory, development of sport specific strength, speed, and endurance; how the energy systems work and are fueled; overtraining, fatigue, and performance capacity; and the mechanics of the training plan. The importance of a balanced approach to sport and life is emphasized throughout the course, with specific emphasis on how to avoid overtraining an athlete. 12
8 PET 5936 Training High Performance Athletes II (3) Students will gain an understanding of the science behind: how the athlete learns skills, neural changes that occur with learning, individual differences among athletes, how to use biomechanics as a skills analysis tool, performance analysis testing and monitoring, and how to use skills analysis software. The importance of skill development in conjunction with physiological capacity development is emphasized, with specific emphasis on relevant performance testing and analysis. SPM 5206 Sport Ethics (3) This course is designed to encourage sport managers to think about the moral and ethical dilemmas typically encountered by managers in the sport industry. 9 Specialization Sport Law The Sport Law specialization is available to all students who want to learn more about the laws that govern numerous aspects of the sport industry. The courses, taught by faculty in UF s esteemed Levin College of Law, further students understanding of legal principles that many sport management professionals encounter in their work. This specialization is especially beneficial to students, including lawyers and collegiate compliance officers, whose current work or future career paths may require advanced knowledge of or familiarity with sport law. Students in this specialization are required to complete 9 credit hours of coursework that can be used to satisfy a portion of the program s 15 credit hour elective requirement. They must complete 6 additional elective credit hours to satisfy the elective course requirement for the degree program. Courses in Sport Law can also be taken as electives outside of the specialization. Since sport and business frequently go hand in hand, students in Sport Law will learn about laws, regulations and judicial decisions that both govern business, in general, and frequently apply to the activities of sport businesses and players. Subjects covered in this specialization include real estate finance, mergers and acquisitions, fair competition, contractual relationships, agency representation, and liability for wrongful conduct. SPM 6905 Advanced Sport Law (3) This course is designed to further student understanding of foundational legal principles in the field of sport management, especially those principles governing contractual relationships, agency representations, and liability for wrongful conduct. SPM 6905 Fair Competition in Sport (3) This subject is an intensive introduction to the law of antitrust, intellectual property, and consumer protection and data privacy. Antitrust focuses typically on monopolization and other restraints of trade. We will focus on: joint ventures, sports leagues, and the NCAA. The course also focuses on copyrights, provides a brief look at trademarks and trade secrets, presents comparisons of what can and cannot be protected, and what rights the owner does and does not obtain. The course will examine the legal implications of technological options to collect and commercialize personal data. SPM 6905 Business of Sport Law (3) Law governs many aspects of business. An understanding of legal rules provides a framework for making sound business decisions and facilitates commercial transactions. The course will cover: Starting a business (entity choice); Real estate finance, zoning; Insurance; Structuring compensation; Tax planning/wealth management; and Post sports career investment (M&A due diligence, franchising, etc.). 10 Capstone Project Learning Online with UF Upon completion of at least 27+ credit hours, students must complete the Capstone Project, which serves as the exit requirement for the sport management degree. This project is the final step in the degree process and must be completed prior to graduation.
