Dream Jobs: Environmental engineer By Environmental Protection Agency, adapted by Newsela staff on Word Count 906 TOP: Nicole Walsh (right), a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District, and Dave Harmon, an environmental engineer with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, inspect a non-federal dam in Dutchess County in New York, September 2, Photo from public domain. BOTTOM: Valarie Zartarian, EPA research environmental engineer, who was interviewed for this article. Photo: EPA.gov Valerie Zartarian is an exposure scientist and environmental engineer at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA is in charge of protecting the environment. Exposure science is the study of how humans interact with chemical and biological materials in their environments, and how that interplay affects them. Zartarian helps build computer models and other tools that advance our understanding of that interplay. Zartarian's work provides communities and leaders with the information they need to make decisions that protect human health. Why is your work important? The science I work on provides EPA and the public with information to improve human health. This article is available at 5 reading levels at 1

My co-workers and I have developed a computer model called SHEDS, which stands for Stochastic Human Exposure and Dose Simulation. "Stochastic" means randomly determined. The model simulates how people come into contact with chemicals in the environment during their everyday activities: breathing, eating, touching surfaces and putting their hands or other objects in their mouths. This research helps the agency figure out where people are at the greatest risk of coming into contact with dangerous chemicals. It also helps the agency make decisions about whether to set rules for certain substances. For example, it might convince the agency to set a rule against using certain pesticides on a lawn or garden. If you could have dinner with any scientist, past or present, who would it be and what would you like to ask them about? There are so many to choose from! I'll go with Maria Mitchell because she was truly a pioneer. She became famous for discovering a new comet. She was the first female U.S. astronomer and the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts & Science. She was the first professor at Vassar College and first internationally recognized female scientist. Mitchell once said, "How much science needs women." I'd be curious to ask her about this quote. I would also ask about her experiences overcoming obstacles in society to reach her goals. I would thank her for helping to break career barriers for women by picking up a telescope. What do you like most about your research? My career has provided amazing opportunities to conduct innovative research and develop tools for improving human health. I like that my research balances science, creativity and practical use for the public. I've had the opportunity to interact with community members and work with top EPA scientists. I'm in awe of my co-workers and feel extremely grateful and proud to be a researcher with EPA. When did you first know you wanted to pursue science? Probably junior year of high school. My teachers were role models, and I enjoyed all of my classes. By senior year, I was intrigued by practical uses of math and science and started to think about engineering as a career path. This article is available at 5 reading levels at 2

Tell us about your science/educational background. I was valedictorian of a high school with an excellent math and science program. Being captain of my high school's math team, which was New England champion for many years, was an influential experience for me. I was also drawn to English and drama, so I attended Princeton University to pursue an engineering degree along with a strong liberal arts education. My undergraduate thesis paper focused on ways to improve models of global climate. I graduated from Princeton with a bachelor's degree in engineering. Then I worked for several years in the field of water resources. In this role, I used pollution models to learn more about the pollutants that enter and affect sources of groundwater. That experience exposed me to the field of environmental engineering. I then attended Stanford University for a master's degree. My advisor at Stanford was interested in understanding pesticide risks to children of migrant farm workers. I found this work fulfilling and decided to stay on for a doctorate degree. Together, we began a human exposure research program at Stanford. I did a thesis on pesticide exposure modeling, for which I developed new video methods to track and understand children's activity patterns. This was an unusual approach for engineering, but it launched me into the field of human exposure science. I joined EPA as a researcher in My graduate school work was a good fit for the agency's newest modeling program. Since then, my career path has evolved in ways I could not have imagined. I'm excited now to be co-leading the Community Public Health project in EPA's Sustainable and Healthy Community's research program. If you were not a scientist, what do you think you would be doing? That's a tough question for me since I have many interests in both the arts and sciences. I really enjoy creative writing as a hobby, so I would probably try that professionally. As a mother of two, I could also picture myself doing something else related to children's health. Any advice for students considering a career in science? I would suggest taking a wide variety of science courses. Doing internships to explore different fields is helpful to gain experience and focus your career interests. After a student has chosen an area of interest and established his or her expertise in that area, it is important to publish articles and stay current on research in the field. Attending conferences and taking training courses are also vital. Lastly, practicing your writing and public speaking skills is critical. You will want to be able to communicate your work to various audiences. This article is available at 5 reading levels at 3

Quiz 1 Which piece of evidence from the article BEST supports the idea that Zartarian's work helps to protect human health? Exposure science is the study of how humans interact with chemical and biological materials in their environments, and how that interplay affects them. This research supports the agency's assessment of health risks in the environment. It also informs decisions about setting regulations on residential pesticides and other toxic substances. I've had the opportunity to interact with community members and work with top EPA scientists. I'm in awe of my co-workers and feel extremely grateful and proud to be a researcher with EPA. I did a thesis on pesticide exposure modeling, for which I developed new video methods to track and understand children's activity patterns. 2 Which section of the article BEST explains the process of Zartarian's work? "Why is your work important?" "What do you like about your research?" "When did you first know you wanted to pursue science?" "Any advice for students considering a career in science?" 3 What purpose does the introduction [paragraphs 1-3] serve in developing the article's CENTRAL ideas? It gives details about an important process focused on by the article. It provides a call to action regarding an issue in the article and its urgency. It gives a basic summary of a job described in the article and its value. It provides definitions for essential terms covered by the article. This article is available at 5 reading levels at 4

That experience exposed me to the field of environmental engineering. I then attended Stanford University for a master's degree. What does this paragraph accomplish? It emphasizes pros and cons of working in between getting a bachelor's and a master's degree. It explains how Zartarian used her experience to solve a problem related to groundwater sources. It demonstrates that Zartarian is intelligent by listing prestigious universities she attended. It describes the experience that developed Zartarian's interest in environmental engineering.
