What does a birthplace need to meet women s wishes? Development of a Category System to Evaluate Austrian B3 User Dates COST Meeting, Sofia September 20th 2016 Karolina Luegmair B.Sc. M.Sc. karolina.luegmair@gmx.de
What do we already know about wishes and demands women have on the place where they give birth? Structural Parameters: Emotional Experiences: Experienced Care: Service and infrastructure [8,12] Information and counselling [4,6] Empowerment[8,9] Personal control [2] Reduced interventions, raised safety [3] Birth-experience and meaningfulness [2,7,8,10] Present companions [12] Valuation and respect [4] Quality and quantity in caring [3,5,7,9,10,11,12] Resulting self-confidence [3] 2
How to optimize evaluation of Austrian B3 User Dates?? 1. Development of a category-system by following relevant literature 2. Transfer of German and international findings to Austrian conditions 3. Sorting of relevant findings into three theoretic frames 4. Classification of Austrian answers to single items in the framework 5. Inductive completing and development of a saturated system 3
What might a deductive category-system look like? Theory: Public Health Theory: Salutogenesis Theory: Self-efficacy 4
What was the best experience at the place of birth? New: 5.0% of answers n=72 Structural parameters: 25.5% of answers n=366 Emotional experiences: 26.1% of answers n=375 Experienced care: 38.6% of answers n=554 None: 4.6% of answers n=67 5
Which experience was most worth a change? New: 12.6% of answers n=142 Structural parameters: 23.1% of answers n=259 Emotional experiences: 22.4% of answers n=251 Experienced care: 21.4% of answers n=240 None: 20.5% of answers n=230 6
Which are the consequences for evaluation of data? Detailed literature research as necessary foundation for finding relevant topics Consider country-specific circumstances in order to discover additional themes Each B3 run has to be followed by adaption of the category-system 7
What effects might follow in evaluation of data? Using the same system for several B3 runs / runs in different countries may ease the comparability of answers Identification of general transnational themes will allow focusing on the most important aspects for women National topics also may be elucidated and will help to optimize birth in countryspecific areas Data evaluation will be more economic by using a deductive system, enriched with inductive additions 8
Presentation of the inductive completed Austrian category-system Further differentiations regarding services, caring personnel, infrastructure Outpatient birth 1.3 Refund of expenses 4 Generalising descriptions Teamwork 3.4 Enlarged midwifery care 9
Résumé Positive experiences: good covering between theory and data Events worth a change: evident gaps between theory and data Especially the individual Austrian context has not been examined properly yet A good place of birth offers: enoughand competent personnel, well conditions in infrastructureand serviceas well as understandableness and manageability of events Things have to be improved: understandableness, manageability, presence of personneland regarding support with breastfeeding Further examination of women s wishes and experiences is essential the B3 User Survey and its international background still is the best opportunity to reach high numbers of women in the most different circumstances 10
Thank You very much!
