SCID518-3 : Journal / researcher evaluation
WHY RESEARCH ARTICLES NEEDED EVALUATION As research articles are product from academic research, their qualities were need in some situation. Position promote (researcher, lecturer) University / Institute ranking (as outcome) University / Institute quality Assurance Grant / research funding request
2017 MUSC research output Major Metrics : Impact Factor Journal Qualtile H index
3 POPULAR METRICS MOSTLY USED Journal Impact Factor (JIF), SCImago Journal Rank (SJR), SCOPUS CiteScore Average times each article in selected journal were cited after published for a period (2, 3 or 5 years) Journal Quartile Ranking H-index All 3 methods are based on how many articles cited or Citation based metrics)
1. JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR 1.1 Journal Impact Factor (JIF) 1.2 SJR Impact Factor
JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR : JIF By Clarivate analytics (Web of Science owner). Database called : Incites Journal Citation Reports (old name was Journal Citations Reports : JCR) The first journal performance matrixs mainly used by funding agencies, academic institute/organization for research quality evaluation At first, it was created as a tool helping librarian evaluate journal for subscription.
JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR : JIF 1 2 Subscribed database Accesses by 1. Inside ISI Web of Science database 2. From Stang Mongkolsuk Library website 3. or direct URL onreuters.com/
JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR : JIF What does it mean?
HOW TO USED INCITES JCR Search by journal name Search by subject area
SEARCH BY SUBJECT CATAGORIES Give all journal in the selected category sort by Impact Factor
SEARCH BY JOURNAL NAME This journal was Determined in subject field
SEARCH BY JOURNAL NAME More information at bottom of screen ; Rank show journal rank in quartile system of every subject category
DETERMINE THE INFORMATION CELL was determined in 2 categories o Biochemistry & Molecular Biology o Cell Biology 2016 edition : JIF = ( 2 years journal impact factor) 5 Year Impact Factor =
impact factor indicates how many times an average article published by selected journal was cited by other articles in an index databases (in this case = Web of Science) in appropriated time (usually 2 years) JCR 2016 IF = ; it s mean In last 2 years (2014 and 2015) article in CELL was cited times by average, 5 years IF = In last 5 years (2011 to 2015) article in CELL was cited times by average. Does it good or bad?
HOW TO CALCULATE IMPACT FACTOR In 2016; Articles published in the last 2 years (2014 and 2015) were cited 26,548 times There were 873 articles published in 2014 and 2015 IF = 26,548 / 873 = 30.41
LIMITATION OF JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR Only journal indexed in Web of Science has Journal Impact Factor. In 2017 the latest version of JIF is 2016 edition. If JIF = 2.156, it was implied that every articles published in this journal has chanced to be cited times by average. We can not use IF to compare journal in different subject categories Some research field (ex. Virology, plant science) has few researcher, so published articles and citations are less than those popular field. This make IF of journal lesser.
JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR : CELL Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Cell Biology Number of journal Impact Factor #1 of rank CELL Nature Reviews Cell Molecular Biology #2 of rank Nature Medicine CELL We can not use IF to compare journal in difference subject category
JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR : JIF Medicine General & Internal Virology Number of journal Impact Factor We can not use IF to evaluate journal in difference subject category
SCIMACO JOURNAL RANK : SJR IMPACT Another journal impact created by Scimaco Lab Calculated data collected by SCOPUS Free database
ACCESS TO SJR Select by journal name Select by subject category
In SJR 2016 Edition : Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology CELL was #3 with Impact = (compare to in JIF)
JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR : JIF & SJR Limitation of Journal Impact Factor (JIF) Impact Factor was actually used to evaluate journal not article (journal metrics). It was used by librarian for making decision in journal subscription. It was implied that journal with higher IF mean it has higher quality than journal with lower IF, because people will cite more on good quality journal/article. However it was actually not. It was found that Open Access Journal usually have more higher IF than subscribed journal, because it was free access so more reader, more chance to be cited, more impact.
JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR : JIF & SJR Impact Factor was calculated by using statistical data from databases (Web of Science or SCOUS). Journal indexed in Web of Science has JIF. Journal indexed in SCOPUS has SJR Journal Impact. Impact Factor of same journal calculated from different sources are not the same CELL had JIF = ; SJR = (because journal collection are not the same). Do not compare Impact Factor from different subject category.
JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR : JIF & SJR Some publishers / databases tried to create their own IF by using same criteria for commercial reason. But the quality was not strong, because they had no strictly criteria in journal selection. So look carefully that the journal has which Impact Factor. General Impact Factor - India Global Impact Factor by Institute for Information Resources - no physical address applied Global Science Citation Impact Factor (GSCIF) - no physical address applied Standard Journal Impact Factor are JIF (Web of Science), SJR (Scimaco), CiteScore (SCOPUS)
QUESTION : CAN I COMPARE JOURNAL QUALITY FROM DIFFERENT CATEGORY Yes, you can use Journal Quartile (rank journal in Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4)
2. JOURNAL QUARTILE (JOURNAL RANKING) 2.1 Incite Jcr Quartile 2.2 SJR Quartile
WHAT IS JOURNAL QUARTILE A kind of journal ranking Sort journal in the same subject category with Impact Factor (use information from Web of Science) or SJR (used information from SCOPUS ;Elsevier) Dividing journal list into 4 groups (quartile) Produced by several company, but the most widely used are from Incite (Web of Science) and SJR (SCOPUS)
JOURNAL QUARTILE Those 4 groups were called Q1 : Top (first 25%) Q2 : Middle high (between 25% to 50%) Q3 : Middle low (between 50% to 75%) Q4 : Last 25% (75% to 100%) Because the company used its own data; ranking of the same journal arranged by different company may not in the same position Funding agency / institute will determine which company to be used.
2.1 Incite JCR Quartile JCR gave in Q2 At Incite JCR ; 1. Search by journal name 2. At the bottom of journal information, select Rank
2.2 SJR Quartile Press + button will change color box to text
Journal : Nucleic Acid Therapeutics SJR arranged to Q2 in Biochemistry (2016 Edition) JCR gave in Q3 Biochemistry Both databases have different information, different in journal coverage, different in time span different result
LIMITATION OF JOURNAL QUARTILE Journal rank of same journal calculated from different databases may not the same. Do not compare journal by using journal rank from different sources
3. H-INDEX
H-INDEX author-level metric (evaluate researcher, research group, institute) measure both the productivity (number of articles published) and citation impact (how many time be cited) of the publications of a researcher. The index is based on the set of the most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications. can be applied to the productivity and impact of a scholarly journal as well as a research group, department or university or country. Produced by several databases ; SCOPUS, Web of Science, Google scholar Higher index is better
Prof. Prasert Sobhon SCOPUS H-index = 24
Prof. Prasert Sobhon Web of Science; H-index = 21
CONCLUSION There are several tools from several databases developed for evaluate research quality Nothing was perfect, we have to select the appropriate and suit to criteria. Journal Impact Factor (ISI Web of Science) and SJR used for journal in the same field. (IF was more popular in Thailand). Journal Quartile used for ranking journal in groups. We can used it for compare journal in different field H index used to qualify person or research group. Index (IF, Journal Quartile or H index) calculated from different databases may not the same. Because it used their own raw information that different in time span and journal coverage, and may be different in method.
