Embrace the Opprtunities f Online Learning Online curses are different than n-the-grund curses. Beynd enjying the cnvenience in nt having t cmmute t class, chse t becme empwered by the ther benefits f nline learning. Well designed and facilitated, nline curses: feature learner-centered/self-directed learning. Self-directed learning requires mre invlvement frm the student. Mre invlvement with curse materials increases the likelihd f retentin. are assignment based. This difference requires students t cntinually d smething with the tpics being addressed in a curse. Students are engaged t make a strng cnnectin with the material. expand resurces fr study beynd the recurses in the curse shell. Students are encuraged t explre a wide variety f Internet based surces f infrmatin that addresses curse tpics. fster student-t-student interactin and supprt pprtunities that can serve as high quality learning pprtunities frm peers. ffer time fr students t cnsider cncepts and skills being addressed beynd the perid ne wuld be present in an n-the-grund classrm. supprt ne-n-ne learning thrugh nging interactin with the instructr. 8 Assist in Creating and Fstering an Online Cmmunity f Learners Online learning cmmunities are an imprtant part and a benefit f an nline curse. Interacting with peers increases a sense f cnnectin and belnging. Interactin during the semester reminds students that they are part f a larger grup f individuals wh are engaged in the same learning experience. Beynd basic interactin, the develpment f a cmmunity f learners ffers students the pprtunity t cllabrate. Students wrk tgether and assist ne anther while fcusing n a cmmn gal successfully gaining knwledge and skills assciated with curse tpics. The respnsibility f creating an nline learning cmmunity is shared between the instructr and the student. The instructr develps a curse frmat, activities, and plicies that ffer the pssibility f a cmmunity. Hwever, student invlvement within their cmmunity is a critical cmpnent t the cmmunity s success.. When participating in this curse it is an expectatin that students will: Cmmunicate clearly, authentically, and maintain a cntent-riented fcus when making Vice Thread cmments. Intellectually challenge peers t cnsider a tpic by ffering well develped cmments that invite peers t share their reflectins n curse material. Maintain a psitive and respectful attitude when interacting with peers. flaming where students fcus n demeaning a peer instead f cnstructively ffering a differing pinin when there is a disagreement - has pint deducting cnsequences. Recgnize Best Practices and Use Them t Achieve Success Students are ffered specific directins n hw t cmplete each assignment within the curse shell. Students shuld refer t assignment pages t understand hw t cmplete assignments. In additin, specific grading rubrics are linked t each assignment riented page s that students understand exactly hw each assignment will be assessed.
