Credits (if app): 1.0 Weighting: 1.0 Course Description: This course is designed for ninth and tenth grade students who are interested in a career in the medical or health related fields. Students will explore a variety of possible health careers such as: educators, nurses, therapists (physical, occupational, speech), physicians, technicians, athletic trainers, and paramedics through discussion, research, speakers and field trips. The first marking period will consist of a review of human anatomy and physiology along with common medical terminology. Students will follow the American Red Cross guidelines for Community First Aid and Safety instruction and upon completion of all requirements will be American Red Cross certified. Students will study anatomy, physiology, conditioning and first aid as it applies to sports and sports injuries. The course will allow hands-on experience through taping, splinting and practical application of first aid concepts. This course is recommended for students interested in health related careers. 1

2 I. Overall Course/Grade Level Standards Students will KNOW and be able TO DO the following as a result of taking this course. A) Identify the requirements for successful completion of American Red Cross Community First Aid Course. B) Recognize the requirements for successful completion of American Red Cross CPR basic life support health care provider course. C) Review the ways the structure and function of the human body is dependent upon interactions between its parts. D) Review the anatomy and physiology of the processing and transporting systems of the body. E) Discuss a variety of health careers including certification/educational requirements, work environment, salary and continuing education that accompanies each career. F) Recognize the growing opportunities for individuals interested in medical research and technology as well as care givers and administration in mental, dental, medical and emergency health care delivery system. G) Practice and accurately perform all skills included in the American Red Cross, Community First Aid and safety certification course. H) Practice and accurately perform all skills included in the American Red Cross, Basic Life Support Health care provider course. I) Differentiate between the structure and function of the interdependent parts of the human body and conclude that survival is dependent upon the interactions between its parts. J) Accurately identify various processing and transporting systems of the human body and demonstrate an understanding of the function structures to the overall survival of the human organism. K) Explore a variety of specific health careers to gain a better understanding of the nature of the job in order to assist them in future academic and career plans. L) Examine the broad variety of job opportunity in the mental, dental, medical and emergency health care delivery systems today and conclude that there is a growing job market in their fields. M) Analyze and discuss the role and need of individual responsibility for safe practices and injury prevention. N) Analyze and apply strategies for the management of injuries. O) Analyze factors that affect the responses of body systems during moderate to vigorous physical activities. Q) Identify mechanisms of injury and explain how to manage them. R) Differentiate between key historical figures and their contributions to modern medicine. S) Analyze healthcare facilities and their intended purposes. T) Identify and assess personal and professional qualities of a healthcare worker. U) Recognize ethical and legal responsibilities of a healthcare worker. 2
