1 Tableau Public Viz Tool The purpose of this document is to provide descriptions of the Split By variables for the 2016 VoiceGR Survey results displayed in the Tableau Public Viz Tool. Once you have entered the Tableau Public Viz Tool, the Split By variable is located as pictured below (see arrow): Split By Variable Description The Split By option enables break-downs of the 2016 VoiceGR survey questions by demographic variables. Splitting a question by another variable will display the distribution of responses for each category of the Split By variable. The Grand Total row is not affected by the Split By variable. Instead, the Grand Total row shows the overall results for all respondents who answered that question.

2 Interpretation Example Survey Section: Question: Split By: Interpretation: Grand Rapids Ratings For yourself, what grade would you give the Greater Grand Rapids Area as a place to live overall? Age Category Approximately 30% of the 1,193 young adults who responded to this question rated Grand Rapids as an A - Excellent place to live. Variable Calculations and Descriptions All This option displays the overall proportion of survey respondents who selected each response option of the indicated survey question. Age Category Age was assessed using the VoiceGR survey question: How old are you? The provided ages were then categorized as follows: Youth: Less than 18 years old Young Adult: 18 to less than 26 years old Middle Aged Adult: 26 to less than 45 years old Mature adult: 45 to less than 65 years old Senior: 65 or older

3 Basic Needs Ability to meet basic needs was categorized using the response options from the VoiceGR survey question: Based on your current income, how well can you afford to meet your basic needs (food, including water; shelter; utilities; and clothing)? Choose only one: Very well Fairly well Not very well Not at all Body Mass Index Category Height was assessed using the VoiceGR survey question: What is your height without shoes? Weight was assessed using the VoiceGR survey question: What is your weight without shoes? Body mass index (BMI) was then calculated using the following formula: BMI = (weight*703)/(height^2) BMI was categorized as follows: Underweight: Less than 18.5 Normal Weight: 18.5 to less than 25 Overweight: 25 to less than 30 Obese: Greater than 30 Children Respondents with children were identified using the response options from the VoiceGR survey question: Do you have children? Choose only one. Yes No

4 Education Education was categorized using the response options from the VoiceGR question: What is the highest level of education you have completed? Choose only one. Graduate Degree or higher Bachelor s degree Associate s degree (AA or 2-year college)/technical certification Some college (no degree) High school graduate or GED Less than or some high school (no diploma) Employment Status Employment status was categorized using four questions on the VoiceGR survey: Do you currently have at least one paying job? Choose only one. If you do not have a paying job, why is that? Check all that apply. How many paying jobs do you currently have? About how many total hours per week do you work at your paying job(s) on average? Respondents who answered no to not having at least one paying job were asked to indicate why. Those who indicated not having a job due to retirement or disability are categorized as Out of workforce, regardless of whether or not they selected another reason. Those who indicated not having a job due to being laid off, quitting their previous job, by choice, and/or other are categorized as Unemployed. Employment status was categorized as follows: 1 job, 31+ hours 2+ jobs, 31+ hours 1 job, hours 2+ jobs, hours < 10 hours Out of workforce Unemployed

5 Gender Gender was categorized using the response options from the VoiceGR survey question: What gender do you identify with? Choose only one. Male Female None of the above Don t know/not sure Health Insurance Status Health care coverage status was categorized using the response options from the VoiceGR question: In the past year, did you have health insurance? Choose only one. Yes, for all of the year Yes, for part of the year No, not in the past year Housing Status Housing status was categorized using the response options from the VoiceGR survey question: What is your housing status right now? Choose only one. Own, no mortgage Own, paying mortgage Rent, including subsidized housing or college housing (contract or lease) Living with someone (friend, relative, etc.) and paying rent without a contract or lease Living with someone (friend, relative, etc.) and not paying rent without a contract or lease Homeless Other

6 Near or Below 100% and 200% Poverty The income category and number of adults and children that the respondent indicated were residing in their household were compared to Michigan s 100% poverty threshold and 200% poverty threshold separately. Income was assessed in the VoiceGR survey and thus this calculation is a rough estimate of respondents who have an income less than 100% or 200% of Michigan s poverty level. Race Race was assessed using the VoiceGR survey question: Which of the following race categories best describes you? Check all that apply. A new variable mutually exclusive categories was then created for race based on the following conditions: if a respondent checked more than two races, the respondent was assigned to the

7 Multiracial category; otherwise, the respondent was assigned the same race category as they checked in the original question. Race was categorized as follows: White Black/African American Hispanic/Latino Asian American Indian/Alaska Native Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander Other Multiracial Race by Gender The Split By variables Gender and Race were combined to create an extra split. Race by Level of Education The Split By variables Education and Race were combined to create an extra split. Relationship Status Relationship status was assessed using the VoiceGR survey question: What is your current relationship status? Check all that apply. A new variable with mutually exclusive categories was then created for relationship status based on the following conditions: If a respondent selected only one relationship status and it was divorced or separated, they were assigned to the group Divorced/Separated. If a respondent indicated more than two relationship statuses, the respondent was assigned to the Other category; otherwise, the respondent was assigned the same relationship status category as they checked in the original question.

8 Relationship status was categorized as follows: Single Committed relationship (not married) Married Widowed Divorced/separated Other Religion/Spirituality/Beliefs Religion/spirituality/beliefs was assessed using the VoiceGR survey question: What is your current religion, faith, or belief? Check all that apply. A new variable with mutually exclusive categories was then created for religion/spirituality/beliefs based on the following conditions: If a respondent selected only one religion/spirituality/belief and it was Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, or Muslim, they were assigned to the group Other. If a respondent indicated more than two religions/spiritualties/beliefs, the respondent was assigned to the Multi-faith category; otherwise, the respondent was assigned the same religion/spirituality/belief category as they checked in the original question. Religion/spirituality/beliefs was categorized as follows: Agnostic Atheist Catholic Protestant Christian Spiritual, non-religious Other Multi-faith None
