2 Aims f the Cunselling and Psychtherapy Prgramme There is an emphasis in ALL ur curses n the relatinship as the basis fr change, n the belief in an individual's value, wrth and capacity fr chice and grwth and the need t respnd t the individual, including ur students. Our integrative mdel draws mainly n humanistic and skills-based appraches as well as effectiveness research. We aim: T prvide a prgramme with sme flexibility - t enable yu t enter at a level that is apprpriate fr yu. Fr example yu may d ne (r mre) f the fllwing: Start with the Fundatin curse Try the Taster mdule, then cnsider taking the rest f the Fundatin curse Jin further n in the prgramme, as lng as yu demnstrate prir experience and training that is relevant and equivalent t ur mdules. Jin ur regular Cunsellr Develpment Frum events and CPD wrkshps. T intrduce students t cncepts and skills frm the cunselling field which will imprve cmmunicatin in, and understanding f, relatinships at hme r wrk. T prvide students with a fundatin that will enhance prfessinal practice as a listening helper in a cunselling related rle, r prepare fr cunsellr training T enable students, typically mature r changing career paths, t becme prfessinal cunsellrs T facilitate the develpment f prfessinal, reflective, ethical, and effective practitiners wh can wrk with a variety f clients and presenting issues by prviding a cunselling educatin that is: Integrative - this means it brings tgether a range f theries and skills, t equip listening helpers t understand and wrk with a variety f peple and prblems Supprtive and encuraging t help yu fulfil yur ptential Critical - we want t encurage thughtful and independent practitiners; Meeting, and cntinuing t meet, prfessinal bdy requirements as these evlve (such as BACP) Enabling practitiners t wrk sensitively and apprpriately in a range f settings, particularly in this Regin, s that they will cntribute t the further develpment f the prfessin in a variety f ways; An up t date emplyment preparatin - we believe that preparatin fr the wrld f wrk is an imprtant aspect f training. 3 Cunselling Prgramme Overview Intrductin t Cunselling Curse Yu are invited t enrl fr the 5 week Taster Curse either as a stand alne mdule r with a view t enrlling n the full fundatin curse. We intrduce cunselling, smetimes called active listening, skills. Yu learn abut the imprtance f the therapeutic relatinship and the functin f each skill. Yu have a lt f pprtunities t practice what yu learn in small grups t build yur cnfidence. This mdule is a mix f sme basic thery, ding and reflectin. (See Taster Applicatin in this pack) Fundatins f Cunselling Develping Persnal Awareness Develping Cunselling Skills & Thery Cmmn Persnal Prblems We intrduce yu t the imprtance f persnal grwth and self-awareness when using cunselling skills. A variety f methds helps yu develp reflective skills and self understanding. The feel f this mdule is reflective and experiential. The mdule intrduces a framewrk t identify and understand cunselling principles and assciated skills. This Stage Mdel builds n and extends existing knwledge, skills and understanding already gained frm the Fundatin curse. This mdule explres typical life prblems that lead peple t seek help. A series f specialist speakers talk n specific tpics and key issues. Yu als investigate a tpic f yur wn chice in mre depth. The feel f this mdule is different frm the tw previus nes mre lecture-based, althugh lectures are interactive. 4 Prfessinal Diplma in Integrative Cunselling and Psychtherapy Year One This year prepares yu t g ut int Placement by giving a gd grunding in: theretical cncepts; persnal develpment and the understanding f thers frm psychlgical and scilgical perspectives; skills develpment; the practicalities and theretical underpinnings f assessment; and applying fr placements. We als invite Placement Prviders t talk t students. The mdules yu study are: Human and Persnal Develpment Cunselling Thery and Skills Scial Cntext Assessment and Referral Year Tw The secnd year cnslidates and extends yur knwledge and skills thrugh develping yur understanding and practice in the fllwing mdules Prfessinal Skills and Trends Cunselling Thery and Skills Clinical Supervisin Yu are prepared fr supervisin s yu understand hw t get the mst frm it. Supervisin is in small grups and ne-t-ne. Year Three The third year aims t help yu develp yur practice further and yur wn integratin. Mdules include: Cunselling Thery and Skills Cmparative Mdels Clinical Supervisin The verall aim f the year is t prepare yu fr entry t the prfessinal wrld as a cmpetent and cnfident practitiner pised t apply fr Accreditatin after accruing the necessary experience. 5 FOUNDATIONS OF COUNSELLING ADMISSIONS CRITERIA & GUIDANCE FOR COMPLETING APPLICATION: Each f these criteria must be met but yu may be strnger in sme areas than thers we lk fr a balance. Academic entry Cunselling Skills Training Cunselling Skills Experience Persnal Develpment Persnal Qualities Attendance and Cmmitment We expect that applicants can study at least at the equivalent f first year degree level, r be helped t achieve that level f study by the end f the curse. If yu have A levels r degree r equivalents, such as a prfessinal qualificatin, yu shuld meet this entry level. Other (inc. nn-standard) qualificatins and wrk-based learning and experience may be cnsidered as equivalent. We will ask t see prf f qualificatins. Yu als need fluency in English and basic Maths and t access the internet, Please give detailed infrmatin in the applicatin frm and send in a cpy f a piece f written wrk ( wrds, preferably wrd-prcessed) which shws yur writing skills. Sme candidates have already undertaken sme cunselling skills training, such as an Intrductry curse. Other candidates may have relevant inservice (including vluntary wrk) training and experience. Hwever, many candidates will have n prir frmal training at all. It is imprtant t tell us in yur applicatin frm the number f hurs attendance fr any cunselling skills training yu have undertaken. Sme candidates will be in paid emplyment where cunselling skills are a part f their jb. Sme will use cunselling skills in frmal vluntary wrk, whilst sme will use them in mre infrmal settings. We prefer applicants t have sme experience in a peple rle. N.B. Students are expected t undertake sme wrk-based learning. Shuld yu wish t prgress t cunsellr training it is necessary t gain sme experience in using cunselling skills, e.g. in a vluntary rle. It will als help in preparatin fr thinking abut where yu might undertake yur practice placement fr the Diplma. We lk fr evidence that yu have gained sme insight frm yur life s experience what yu have learned abut yurself: hw yu functin internally, hw yu are in relatin t thers, and what yu understand abut hw ther peple functin. Hw might these things make yu a better listening helper? This learning may have cme in frmal ways, such as having cunselling yurself. It is nt a requirement f this curse that yu have cunselling, but we are interested in yur attitude t cunselling fr yurself and encurage yu t experience being a client. It is a requirement fr the Diplma curse. We try t ascertain, frm yur persnal statement in the applicatin frm, frm yur references and the interview, whether yu have the qualities ne wuld expect in a persn wh wishes t becme a listening helper, fr example: penness t experience; an accepting attitude (smetimes called nnjudgemental ) twards thers; sme understanding f the nature f prejudice; the ability t reflect n life experience. We als have a respnsibility t clients and t yu t ensure yur stability and resilience in undertaking what is a very demanding curse. We lk fr the ability t cpe with the demands f the curse and wrking as a listening helper (intellectual, practical and emtinal). We als ask yu t cmplete a Persnal Statement and a Fitness t Practice Cmmitment and Declaratin. Cnsistent and regular attendance is a curse requirement. Sme candidates have undertaken extensive cunselling skills training, such as a Certificate in Cunselling Skills (1-2 years part-time). Other candidates have a cmbinatin f frmal skills training and ther relevant in-service (including vluntary wrk) training and experience. We expect at least 100 hurs f prir skills training s that yu can fulfil the requirements f BACP Accreditatin. It is imprtant t tell us in yur applicatin frm the number f hurs attendance fr each cunselling skills training curse yu have undertaken. Sme candidates will be in paid emplyment where cunselling skills are a part f their jb. Sme will use cunselling skills in frmal vluntary wrk, whilst sme will use them in mre infrmal settings. We expect arund 50 hurs minimum experience. We are interested in hw yu have applied yur learning since undertaking cunselling skills training. N.B. Students are expected t undertake a cunselling practice placement Frm the 2 nd year. We ffer sme help with finding such a placement, but it is helpful t yu if yu have any pprtunities r links available and start thinking abut this early. Yu shuld address in yur persnal statement any items in the Fitness t Practice Declaratin t which yu have answered YES. 16 The Academy: Sheffield Psychtherapy and Cunselling Educatin Fitness t Practice Cmmitment and Declaratin Practitiners in cunselling, psychtherapy, and related peple-rles are entrusted with the emtinal and psychlgical well-being f peple wh are vulnerable when they seek help. The practitiner carries, and/r is invested with by the help-seeker, a psitin f pwer and authrity and thus influence ver them. Fr this reasn, emphasis is placed n the ethical bligatins and principles f gd practice t prtect well-being (in line with the BACP Ethical Framewrk 2002). This includes selfcare, in a prfessin which can impact significantly n a practitiner s wn health and well-being. We require all students t becme NCS r BACP members and undertake a CRB check. Students n cunselling and psychtherapy curses practice their skills n ne anther and ffer their wn life and emtinal experiences as learning material. It is ur respnsibility as educatrs and representatives f the prfessin, t establish as far as is feasible that candidates and students are nt likely t d harm - t fellw students, clients, clleagues, the reputatin f the prfessin, the Academy and Sheffield Hallam University - r themselves t be harmed by the training prcess, which is emtinally and psychlgically demanding.
