5 Myers Briggs Type Indicator Background: MBTI developed during World War II to help find women find employment that they would be comfortable with. Grown and changed over sixty years into a valid and reliable psychological instrument used in more than sixty countries.

6 Myers Briggs Type Indicator Analyzes eight different aspects of the personality in four pairs of dichotomies. Result: Individual is one of sixteen different personality types. One type is not better than the others. Each type is unique and benefits our society. Type does not change over a life time, except with a life changing event: War, extreme natural disasters, prison. Our type is solidified by the time we are fourteen. Type is a result of our early experience. Please don t peg yourself or others. Please obtain this instrument from a qualified counselor who has graduate training in this field. Free tests are not valid. Just knowing your type is meaningless. Applied type provides us with information to make meaningful decisions Used incorrectly it can be harmful.

7 MBTI Measures Eight aspects of the personality in four pairs of dichotomies Throw out the normal meanings that you would assign to these words

8 Dichotomy One Extroversion Introversion E Extroverts: People who prefer extraversion tend to focus on the outer world of people and the external environment. When you are extroverting, you are energized by what goes on in the outer world and this is where you tend to direct your own energy. Extroverts usually prefer to communication more by talking than by writing. They need to experience the world in order to understand it and thus like action. I Introverts: People who prefer introversion focus more on their own inner world. When you are introverting, you are energized by what goes on in your inner world, and this is where you tend to direct your own energy. Introverts tend to be more interested and comfortable when their work requires a good deal of their activity to take place quietly inside their heads. They like to understand the world before experiencing it, and so often think about what they are doing before acting. Where do you focus your attention? How do you gain energy?

9 Dichotomy Two Sensing Intuition S Sensing: One way to acquire information is to use your sensing function. Your eyes, ears & other senses tell you what is actually there and actually happening both inside and outside of yourself. Sensing is especially useful for appreciating the realities of a situation. Sensing types tend to accept and work with what is given in the here and now, and thus become realistic and practical. They are good at remembering and working with a great number of facts. N Intuition: The other way to acquire information is Through intuition, which shows you the meanings, relationships and possibilities that go beyond the information from your senses. Intuition looks at the big picture and tries to grasp the essential patterns. If your preference is intuition, you grow expert at seeing new possibilities and new ways of doing things. Intuitive types value imagination and inspiration. How do you acquire information? What do you do with information?

10 Dichotomy Three Thinking - Feeling T Thinking One way to decide is through your thinking. Thinking predicts the logical consequences of any particular choice or action. When you use your thinking you decide objectively, on the basis of cause and effect, and make decisions by analyzing and weighing the evidence, even including the unpleasant facts. People with a preference for thinking seek an objective standard of truth. They are frequently good at analyzing what is wrong with something. F Feeling The other way to decide is through your feeling. Feeling considers what is important to you or to other people (without requiring that it be logical,) and decides on the basis of person-centered values. When making a decision for yourself, you ask how much you care, or how much personal investment you have for each of the alternatives. Those with a preference for feeling like dealing with people and tend to become sympathetic, appreciative, and tactful. How do you make decisions?

11 Dichotomy Four Judging - Perceiving J Judging Those who take a judging attitude tend to live in a planned, orderly way, wanting to regulate life and control it. When you use your judging function, you like to make decisions, come to closure, and then carry on. People with a preference for judging prefer to be structured and organized and want things settled. (It is important to understand that judging as used here does not mean judgmental, any type can be judgmental.) P Perceiving Those who prefer a perceptive process when dealing with the outer world like to live in a flexible, spontaneous way. When using your perception, you are gathering information and keeping your options open. People with a preference for perceiving seek to understand life, rather than control it. They prefer to stay open to experience, enjoying and trusting their ability to adapt to the moment. How do you orient yourself toward the outside world?

13 Myers Briggs Type Theory Applied Dominant & Auxiliary Function Heart of the Myers Briggs: Only deals with the two central dichotomies: Sensing or Intuition and Thinking or Feeling

14 Myers Briggs Type Indicator Applied Dominant Function: What you are all about. What you cannot help but do in your approach to life. Auxiliary Function: Supports your dominant function. Tertiary Function: Will be used more as you mature. Inferior Function: Opposite of your dominant function. Need to actively develop this function.

15 Example ENFP E- Not a deal breaker P- Not a deal breaker S or N T or F A Career Counselor will know the dominant and auxiliary function pursuant to your type. In this case the N is dominant and the F is auxiliary. From this, you need an action statement which for an ENFP is the following:

16 Personality Supersedes Interests and Values in Career Decisions The personality is the gatekeeper through which your interests and values are filtered.

17 Strong Interest Inventory Measures your interests from a psychological perspective Your interests become solidified in your midtwenties and can change as you mature into your later years.

24 Now What Should I Do? Run your career interests through the action statement of your personality. The personality supersedes interests and values.

25 Values Oh my, a whole other discussion. Unlike personality type values change as you negotiate through the different stages of your life. Make a list of your values now. Re-visit your values as your life situation changes. Don t berate yourself for your values.
