One week program of activities Aimed at AS-Level Psychology students Takes place in July, after AS-Level exams Intended to give an insight into life as university student/staff 1

Response to requests from individual students/ colleges Previous ad-hoc system not feasible/fair Raise aspirations and provide experience for talented students interested in career in Psychology Provide a more realistic idea of what it is like to study psychology Advertising 1 st year: recruitment through local sixth forms, utilising existing links 2 nd year: sent out via central WP school mailing list Applications Students complete application form outlining why they would be good candidate and demographic details Criteria Quality of application Motivation and interest in Psychology WP Status (50% places reserved for WP cohort based on parent education) Places 2012: 12 students (~25 applications) 2013: 18 students (~120 applications) 2014: Planning for 20 students Link to Poster Link to Application form 2

Activities chosen to provide insight into work as student/ academic: Lecture on Nonverbal Communication Group research project Take part in psychology experiments Outreach workshop and activity design Talk from Careers Service Interviews with staff Mini-conference - talks from academic staff Link to example timetable End of week presentation [link to presentation] 3

I enjoyed the Psychology Work Experience Programme I think the Psychology Work Experience Programme was a worthwhile experience From the Psychology Work Experience Programme I have found out something about Psychology that I didn t know before I am leaving the Psychology Work Experience Programme more interested in Psychology than before As a result of the Psychology Work Experience Programme I am more likely to want to study psychology at university I thought the activities were aimed at the right level for me to complete Strongly Agree Agree Not Sure Disagree Strongly Agree Which activities did you enjoy the most (i.e. what should we keep as it is?) I enjoyed taking part in experiments which were made by other groups and also the other researchers (post-grads/phds) which my participation could further their findings. I also enjoyed the experiment that my group put together and the talk about child language. Also the careers talk was very helpful. I extremely enjoyed designing and actually carrying out our won experiments as we got to know other members in different groups better. And this gave us an insight of the responsibilities that we needed to carry out an experiment. In addition I really benefitted from the PGs and academics talks and taking part in other psychologists experiments. I enjoyed being able to make up our own research projects with our own ideas and how we could decide what we wanted to do. Also, all the talks from different psychologists made me aware of things that I wasn t before. The careers talks were good, before I always thought getting a PhD was a long and boring process but now it sounds like a great route to a career in any area of psychology that interests me. Outreach was useful and gave me a better idea of how to create and organise. Designing an experiment was fun and you get to know other group members as well. Designing out own experiments and joining in others and the Outreach programme. Also the talks by lectures and researchers. Giving the presentations were also interesting to listen to the other groups 4

Which activities did you enjoy least (i.e. what should be changed)? Maybe have more departments of psychology in the talks The clinical psychology talk; I found that the presentation was more about the Dr s work rather than a broad overview of the clinical psychology profession. The careers woman was really helpful, but only with the professional psychologists too. It was better hearing it from people who had been through it all and had done the Degree/ Masters/PhD (but she was still informative!) I think I least enjoyed careers talks as the talks from academics and postgraduates were much more beneficial and this would obviously be because they are experts on the types of jobs they do. I really enjoyed it all but if I had to choose I would say the outreach project. I enjoyed it but maybe it could be slightly shorter session and you could do something else. Possibly more variety in the talks, e.g. forensic psychologist The postgraduate talks felt a bit boring after some time for 3 hours it might be better to spread them over the week I don t feel as though there are any activities that I did not enjoy or did not gain any extra knowledge from so I would not change anything as I had a really busy and fun week Selecting applicants is hard high demand for places and applications often quite similar still trying out different systems of recruitment/selections If planning large number of students then you need to be very organised in planning activities (esp if doing different things at different times!) but it is possible! Make sure there is work for students to do in between activities (e.g. preparing a presentation for end of week, writing blog post etc). Explain your role (and the role of your colleagues) fully students have little idea of what researchers/lecturers actually do on a daily basis 5

If you would like copies of any of the materials I have talked about then please me: samantha.rowbotham@manchester.ac.uk Big thanks to: Melissa Noke, Miffy Williams, Ruth Butterworth, SPS Outreach Group, Central WP team, and all staff and postgrads involved in delivering activities Any questions? 6
