3 SIX THINKING HATS EDWARD DE BONO Lateral Thinking- technique of exploring different perspectives towards a complex situation or challenge Each hat represents different perspective: 1. White hat neutral, objective facts what is needed and how can the data be secured 2. Red hat feeling, emotion, intuition, hunch, subjective, view without justification 3. Black hat Judging, critical, why something is wrong/wont work, logical negative view 4. Yellow hat Sunshine, optimism, logical positive view, look for benefits, what s good 5. Green hat Creative thinking, possibilities and hypotheses, new ideas 6. Blue hat Process, steps, chairperson, organizer, thinking about thinking Structured sequence: 1. Present the facts white hat 2. Generate ideas about how to handle problem green hat 3. Evaluate the merits of the idea yellow hat 4. Test everyone s gut feeling about the alternatives red hat 5. Summarize blue hat 3
4 THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE STEPHEN COVEY To be highly effective.initiate, focus, prioritize, connect, cooperate, improve yourself and let others win. 1 HABIT ONE BE PROACTIVE Don t delay! 2 HABIT TWO BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND Thriving on change requires a core of robust values. 3 HABIT THREE PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST We don t manage time. We can only manage ourselves. 4 HABIT FOUR SEEK TO UNDERSTAND, THEN BE UNDERSTOOD Empathic listening is with the ears, eyes, and heart 5 HABIT FIVE THINK WIN/WIN If a deal hurts them, it will hurt you. 6 HABIT SIX SYNERGIZE Look for the added value of the partner contributions 7 HABIT SEVEN SHARPEN THE SAW To stay strong, re-energize and renew the spirit. 4

9 CONCLUSIONS Hiring top quality (personality being key attribute) people is a critical skill EQ and soft skills are critically important Decentralize innovation where possible Take a sequenced, multi-perspective, logical/lateral approach to problem solving/idea creation Cut out non-essential tasks.focus on the goal don t be distracted Visionary, team-building leaders better than genius, charismatic ones! Break down big, complex tasks into manageable chunks Pay close attention to why teams succeed and fail Negotiation is fundamental life and business skills Bias free decision-making is important to arrive at best destination Importance of client focus People motivated by meaning rather than $, happiness or pleasure Hard work often more important than innate talent Finding the right place for top performers in an organization is critical be adaptable and act with intent 9
