Unidentified emotions Lack of awareness about how to express or Chronic & Intense Helpless & Hopeless Depression & anxiety control 1

2 Mad, Sad, Glad, & Scared 4 basic emotions Others are shades of the basic four Bottom-up progression CNS to insular Vertical progression-nonverbal to verbal Must be present (mindful) to name feeling Must name before acting Must have options for acting Why Mindfulness? Mindfulness in going inside and figuring out what you sense/feel and being present with it before acting Allows individual to recognize his/her/their own personal state and then choose what they want to do about it Recognition and being present allows parasympathetic nervous system to do its job calm down, relax, de-stress Mindfulness is free, is socially appropriate, and can be done anytime, anywhere What to do Be mindful Recognize you are having a feeling Identify the feeling Accept the feeling Consider coping skills for the feeling Pick one or more Act! 2

3 Mad Function of Mad Anger helps us protect ourselves Where do you feel mad in your body? What can you do to help your anger speak for you or get what you want? Don t ever lose your anger anger is ok make it work for you be assertive! Coping Skills for Mad Don t act! (unless it is an emergency-self-defense situation) Make sure you are mostly mad (not mostly sad or scared) Figure out what you want the end result to be Make a plan about how you can stop this happening to you again Get support you just had to defend yourself! Company to hear the story, exercise, action, commitment to self, wordplots, breathing Sad Function of Sad Sad helps us figure out what we care about and protects us Where do you feel sad in your body? What can you do to support yourself when you are sad? Don t ever lose your ability to be sad it shows that you care this family has your back this too will pass 3

Enjoy your ability to create joy it is there even in bad times this family has your back Coping Skills for Glad Don t act! Enjoy! Appreciate! Figure out if you can create this feeling again Share support you just had a wonderful experience! Breathe, exercise, hugs, comfort food, company, gotos, nature baths, pets, music, hugs, breathe Challenge: For the next week write down three things that happened to you that day that brought you joy does not matter how small Emotional Health for Parents Know your own feelings Know about others in the family Set ground rules for expression of feelings as a family Respect the feeling acknowledge respect for feeling Ask how you can help Coach (don t tell or assume) about options and choosing the right option When your child knows what and why they feel different emotions it will help them claim their identity you are helping them grow into young adulthood! Don t wait for it to be chronic explore counseling options 5
