4 Expert Speaker Series Applied Behavior Analysis and Vocational Interventions: Promoting Competitive Employment for Individuals with Severe Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Paul H. Wehman, Ph.D. Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Virginia Commonwealth University October 5, 2017 Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to describe the importance of competitive employment for individuals with severe disabilities. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques, when used in conjunction with supported and customized employment, are a powerful tool to promote competitive integrated employment. In the presentation, there will be a substantial use of streaming-video case studies with persons who have autism and severe IDD. Additionally, there will be numerous illustrations of how different ABA techniques can be used to help individuals acquire new work behaviors, reduce negative behaviors, and accelerate work productivity. Bio: Dr. Paul Wehman has been a Professor of Physical Medicine with joint appointments in the Departments of Rehabilitation Counseling and Special Education / Disability Policy at VCU for over 30 years. He serves as Chairman for the Division of Rehabilitation Research in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and has managed NIDILRR funded RRTCs and DRRPs. He was one of the pioneers in the development of supported employment in the early 1980s, publishing over 200 articles and authored/edited 40 books and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, (JVR) since He has been recognized as one of the 50 most influential people in special education for the millennium by Remedial and Special Education. On a daily basis, he works with PWD, policy makers, and professionals related to disability. He is an expert in transition from school to work and is active in mentoring undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. Page 4

5 Introduction to Organizational Behavior Management and Strategic Planning Peter Dams, Ph.D. President, Dams & Associates, Inc. November 2, Expert Speaker Series Abstract: It is becoming incr easingly important that leaders in any organization understand basic principles of Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) that are based on the science of behavior. This presentation will provide a brief introduction to OBM and present powerful systems thinking and strategic planning tools that should be part of every leader's toolbox. Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the relationship between Applied Behavior Analysis and Organizational Behavior Management and identify major areas of OBM application; 2. Describe the elements of an organizational systems model for improving organizational performance at different levels; 3. Identify the benefits of strategic planning to organizations and their functions; and 4. Discuss the role of leaders and managers in aligning the organization. Bio: Dr. Peter Dams consults with organizational leaders on strategic planning, process improvement, and culture change. Peter s clients include Fortune 500 companies, privately held businesses, state universities, municipalities, and non-profit organizations. He earned his doctorate from Western Michigan University in Applied Behavioral Science with emphasis on Organizational Behavior Management and Behavioral Systems Analysis. At WMU, he serves as Adjunct Associate Professor in the area of Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Page 5

6 Expert Speaker Series Applied Behavior Analysis and Aging Jonathan C. Baker, Ph.D., BCBA-D Clinical Faculty Specialist, Western Michigan University February 22, 2018 Abstract: LeBlanc, Heinicke, and Baker (2012) discussed situations in which Behavior Analysts might look to expand the scope of practice, including interest in making social impact for an underserved population, flexibility in location, enhanced financial stability, and intellectual stimulation. LeBlanc et al. then provided a series of suggestions for expanding scope of practice. Other researchers (Friman, 2010; Normand & Kohn, 2013) have also noted the benefits and importance of expanding scope of practice and have provided additional frameworks. One area that researchers and clinicians have suggested as an important area for behavior analytic support is aging settings, both for typically developing adults, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The proportion of the United States population over the age of 65 steadily increased throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century. Adults over the age of 65 are projected to account for 20% of the total U.S. population by the year 2030, and 24% by 2060 (Colby & Ortman, 2014). Although increases in longevity and a growing aging population signal advances in care and improvements in quality of life, they are also accompanied by age-related challenges. This presentation will examine the role of Behavior Analysts in aging settings, empirical support for behavior analytic services in aging settings, and unique areas of training and consideration for BCBAs practicing in aging settings. Bio: Dr. Jonathan Baker is a clinical faculty specialist in the Department of Psychology at Western Michigan University. Prior to joining WMU, he was an associate professor and coordinator of the gerontology certificate program, as well as a faculty member in the behavior analysis and therapy program in the Rehabilitation Institute at Southern Illinois University. He earned a certificate in gerontology from the University of Kansas, a Master of Arts degree in Applied Behavior Science from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. from Western Michigan University. Dr. Baker is on the Board of Directors for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and serves on the editorial board for the Analysis of Verbal Behavior, The European Journal of Behavior Analysis, Behavioral Development, and Behavior Analysis: Research and Practice. Dr. Baker is the former president of the Mid-American Association of Behavior Analysis and former chair of the Behavioral Gerontology Special Interest Group with ABAI. Page 6

7 Expert Speaker Series Organizational Ethics Matthew Brodhead, Ph.D., BCBA-D Assistant Professor, Michigan State University March 8, 2018 Abstract: Professional and ethical behaviors are critical for high quality care and consumer protection. By using behavioral systems, Behavior Analysts may increase the probability of employees engaging in professional and ethical behaviors because systems may describe what to do, instead of what not to do, when faced with a professional or ethical issue. This presentation will discuss strategies for using behavioral systems for teaching and maintaining professional and ethical behavior in an organization, building and maintaining relationships in interdisciplinary settings, developing cultural awareness of employees, and defining scope of competency and boundaries of practice. Bio: Dr. Matthew T. Brodhead is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst- Doctoral (BCBA-D). His research examines behavioral determinants of response variability, choice, and independent social skills in children with autism. He also writes about conceptual issues relating to the ethical and professional behavior of practicing Behavior Analysts. He is on the editorial board of multiple journals, including Behavior Analysis in Practice, The Analysis of Verbal Behavior, and Behavior and Philosophy. Through workshops and consultation, he has established multiple school-based programs for children with autism, and he has provided training to teachers, related service providers, and Behavior Analysts both nationally and internationally.
