3 May August 2010 North Mississippi Regional Center Behavioral Health Mental Health Clinical Intern v Assessed and treated acute psychiatric patients throughout a supervised practicum experience. v Conducted client intake interviews, created short and long term treatment plans, lead group therapy sessions, and counseled patients individually. v Responsible for daily addition of individual and group process notes as documented in case files. v Facilitated activities and discussions related to various psychoeducational groups presented; topics included anger management, stress and anxiety, grief, problem-solving skills, assertiveness training, communication, and psychological disorders. v Participated in daily treatment team meetings to evaluate each client s progress, goals, and effective therapeutic approaches for success. January 2008-September 2008 Accountability Based Sex Offender Program Barry Burkhart, Ph D., Supervisor Alabama Department of Youth Services Program Assistant/Group Counselor Mt. Meigs Campus, Mt. Meigs, Alabama v Co-facilitated group therapy coinciding with the phase treatment plan utilized for the adolescent males in the program. Group topics focused on collaboration, teambuilding exercises, and emotion regulation through problem solving, physical challenges, games, and role playing. v Co-facilitated group therapy aimed at students experiencing difficulty on their therapy track; focused on providing solutions and addressing the distress caused by not progressing with others in the class. Group purpose aimed at refocusing the client on their purpose in the program and in therapy. v Responsible for performing regular clerical duties including; data entry, creating spreadsheets, editing documents, filing, and coordinating weekly snack procurement and distribution with dorm supervisors. 3

4 August 2007-September 2008 Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project Program Assistant v Collaborated with the Director and Auburn Department of Psychology to create an IRB approved research project that evaluated the effect of class participation on inmate psychopathy. v Assisted the Director for a program that currently works with 18 prisons and transitional facilities across the state of Alabama offering art and literature classes to incarcerated individuals. v Facilitated the ongoing establishment of the Library Development Project, to catalog and secure donations to various prisons. To date, over 13,000 books have been received and distributed. v Assisted in grant applications that included National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), The Puffin Foundation, and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). v Responsible for scheduling classes, contacting multiple prisons in the state of Alabama for class purposes. May 2007-August 2007 Alabama Prison Arts +Education Project Volunteer v Performed administrative and clerical duties including filing and entering donated book information in an ongoing Prison Library Project. Cataloged various incoming books and distributed to multiple prisons across the state of Alabama. 4

5 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE August 2010-April 2011 Master s Thesis Perceived Parenting Styles, Psychopathology, and Environment: What Influences Projected Parenting (A. Norwood, PI) v Master s thesis research project focusing on parenting and parenting styles as related to the formulation of parenting styles in later generations (projected parenting). Due to a lack of recent research in the area, this study examined how college-age students believe they will parent when they have children. v Explored various factors that could influence the parenting styles participants imagine they will have, such as how they perceive they were parented, their psychopathology, parental psychopathology, and their environment. v Results indicate participants will adopt a style of projected parenting that is similar to how they perceive their parents parented. v Perceived paternal parenting was mediated by parental psychopathology, and perceived maternal psychopathology was found to be positively associated with positive projected parenting. v The study aims to provide information related to the positive and negative influences contributing to the formulation of parenting beliefs and practices. August Present Parenting and Child Psychology Lab Dr. Cliff McKinney v Participated in lab meetings addressing current research in child and adolescent behavior disorders and psychopathology. v Contributed to various research projects and ideas related to adolescent conduct disorder, parenting perceptions, and the impact of playtime in childhood. v Developed a thesis topic analyzing the relationship of perceived parenting styles, participant and parental psychopathology, as related to participant projected parenting styles. 6 August February 2009 Effectiveness of Creative Writing on Psychological Well-Being in a Prison Setting A. Norwood, Principal Investigator v Designed, coordinated, and submitted an IRB Approved Research Project as an undergraduate. v Administered multiple psychological measures to 45 adult male inmates in a medium security correctional facility; hand-scored the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Pennebaker Inventory of Limbic Languidness (PILL), and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) to determine the effectiveness of creative writing on psychological state, mood, and behavior patterns. v Entered data and analyzed output via SPSS statistical software. v Responsible for poster submissions to the Southeastern Psychological Association, and American Psychological Association. v Collected and analyzed data using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). v Study revealed a decrease in negative behavior problems as cited by prison officials, increase in positive affect, and decrease in overall physical symptoms related to negative affect in correlation with exposure to creative writing classes. Supervisor: Barry Burkhart, PhD January 2007-January 2008 Stressful Life Events, Trauma Lab G. Pruneau, P.I. v Research Assistant for post-traumatic stress disorder lab, focusing on the stressful life events experienced by college students. v Conducted and administered testing sessions for multiple participants, entered and coded data into SPSS. v Created new testing packets, worked one on one with graduate students to clean data, and participated in research lab training meetings. Also provided consultation and referral services for participants following the workshop.
