Page 4 of 8 Introduction and Overview The Department of Psychology currently operates laboratory classrooms in Clark C71, C72, and C79 and an undergraduate computer lab in Clark C68. For some laboratory projects, classes meet in our CFT-funded special-use laboratories: the EEG Lab (BSB 011) and the Driving Simulator Lab (BSB 009). Some class meetings also occur in Clark C78, Clark C248, and BSB268, which are multi-use facilities. Use of these rooms is quite high: currently over 45 laboratory sections meet in these rooms each year. The general goals of the Department of Psychology are to use CFT funds to: (1) provide undergraduates with high-quality, hands-on experiences in laboratory courses using modern computers and equipment, (2) accommodate as many students as possible without compromising the quality of the laboratory experience, and (3) incorporate laboratorytype experiences and technology-based presentations into larger classroom settings. Some of the key purchases we would like to make with CFT funds this year include (a) a research-grade motion capture system, (b) equipment and supplies to support projects in the Biological Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab courses, and (c) various equipment and supplies for the EEG facility that is also used by the Biological Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab courses. All of the items we propose to purchase are listed below in order of their priority to the Department. I. Vicon Motion Capture System CSU recently hired one of the world s leading experts on perception and action. Her presence at CSU has generated considerable excitement among students familiar with her work, due to its applications to the performance of physical skills, included sports performance. To take advantage of our having one of the world s leading experts in this area, we would like to incorporate projects into the Sensation and Perception and Cognitive Psychology Laboratory courses pertaining to the psychology of perception and action. We offer 16+ sections of the S&P and Cognitive Psychology courses each year, typically serving over 200 students per year. To support projects on perception and action, we wish to purchase a state-of-the-art motion tracking system. The system codes the kinematics of arm and hand movements (and could be expanded to code full-body movements as well). Some psychological phenomenon cannot be studied without a motion capture system. For example, to study the two anatomically-distinct visual pathways, one needs a way to measure vision-for-action, which can be done using kinematics. In addition, kinematics reveal more subtle (and sometimes unconscious) processing that cannot always be assessed using traditional measures such as Likert scales, button presses, and reaction times. Thus, this motion tracking system allows undergraduates to study phenomena that can t be examined through other means, and also study findings using state-of-the-art techniques. This would be valuable in the S&P and Cognitive Psychology Laboratory course to examine phenemona that have traditionally used reaction time as the dependent measure (because the measurement of kinematic movement is much more sensitive), and to examine phenenoma that have traditionally used certainty or confidence as measures. The system could also be used to examine lying, to investigate vision-for-action versus vision-for-perception, and to investigate the role of performing an action on perceptual and cognitive processes.

Page 5 of 8 The system includes a sophisticated optical camera and giganet unit; a life science basic accessory kit that has markers and suits to motion detection projects; and the necessary software and hardware to run the system. The manufacturer has offered us a $11,400 discount. Camera and motion detection hardware $24,000 Markers, suits, and kits $750 Software $14,000 Computer, rails, and other 3 rd party hardware $5,895 Shipping and handling $150 Total $44,795 Discount -$11,400 Grand Total $33,395 II. Biological Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab Courses We currently have two laboratory courses that cover the physiological basis of behavior, both housed in the C71 teaching laboratory. The Biological Psychology Lab course (a) places a stronger emphasis on the study of human functional neuroanatomy using brain specimens and educational software, (b) includes hands-on projects using physiological measures gathered on Biopac systems, and (c) includes neuropsychological tests for assessment purposes. The Cognitive Neuroscience Lab course places a stronger emphasis on electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potential (ERP) projects, but has a neuroanatomy component as well. The items requested below are to support existing projects and develop new projects for these two courses. We offer 14 sections of these courses per year, serving about 170 students per year. Mobile Workstations: Mobile laptops are used in the Biological Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory courses. (There is not sufficient space in the laboratory to set up desktop computers as fixed workstations. We therefore store the laptops in locked cabinets in the room, and pull them out as needed for various course projects.) These laptops are used for inclass activities, data collection, data analysis, and completion of final projects. In particular, the computers are used to drive the Biopac systems, run the Biopac analysis tools, run statistical software, access information on the internet, etc. Currently, we only have enough laptops to accommodate two students per computer. In addition, the existing units will be five years old by next academic year. We would therefore like to purchase 15 new laptops to upgrade the computers and accommodate one student per computer. $1489) $22,335 Biopac Student Lab: Biopac is a system designed for projects in psychophysiology and neurophysiology and includes hardware and software for acquiring galvanic skin responses, skin temperature, ECG, pulse, respiration, airflow, nerve conduction, continuous blood pressure, continuous cardiac output, EEG, EMG, EOG, and ECG. Biopac gets especially heavy use in the Biological Psychology Lab course, being used for the majority of course meetings. We already own several Biopac systems, but two additional systems are requested given their frequency of use in the Biological Psychology Laboratory course and the desire to have enough systems on hand to allow students to work in groups of 2-3, thereby providing students with more hands-on experience with the equipment. $4045) $8,090

Page 6 of 8 Biopac Supplies: EKG/Echo electrodes (1 $325), Isotonic electrodes (6 $45), B-Alert Disposable Study Kit (small; $275), B-Alert Disposable Study Kit (medium; $275). $1145 Invertebrate neurophysiology rigs: Students in the Cognitive Neuroscience and Biological Psychology laboratories do not currently get sufficient hands-on experience in neurophysiology. Cheap, do-it-yourself electronics projects have become increasingly available in recent years, allowing non-human neurophysiology to be done for a fraction of the cost. We are proposing to integrate several new hands-on experiments for students using such units. With each unit, students can work in pairs to perform the following experiments, recording action potentials directly from various invertebrate species: 1) Rate coding in neurons of the jumping leg of the common cricket; 2) examine effects of nicotine on neural activity in crickets; 3) examine sensory adaptation by manipulation of the leg barbs on cricket legs; 4) examine effects of electrical stimulation of nerve and muscle in the cricket; and 5) record the conduction velocity of an action potential in earthworms. Note that these are a sampling of the possibilities rather than an exhaustive list. $152) $1216 Neuroanatomy Items Preserved Sheep Brains $12.50) $525 Dissection Trays. $12) $24 Petri Dishes. (15 $8) $120 Disposable Scalpels. (3 $8) $24 Kim Wipes. (4 bulk $5) $20 Clorox Wipes. (3 $11) $33 Nitrile Gloves. (11 $18) $198 III. CFT EEG Facility (BioPsych and CogNeuro Lab Courses) We currently have a CFT-funded EEG facility in the basement of the Behavioral Sciences Building (Room 011). The EEG facility is the central focus for projects in the Cognitive Neuroscience Lab course and is also used in the Biological Psychology Lab course. In total, 14 laboratory sections (about 170 students per year) use the EEG facility. In past years, CFT funds were used to purchase two types of EEG recording systems, a highdensity EGI system that supports brain imaging, and a traditional Neuroscan EEG system that is most suitable for teaching students standard methods for the hand placement of electrodes, the application of standard electrode caps, and the analysis of brain wave components. Note that these systems represent the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology that is available to psychology majors. To support our EEG projects, we wish to use CFT funds for maintenance and supplies.

Page 7 of 8 Neuroscan System Supplies. Supporting supplies and equipment are needed for the traditional Neuroscan system, including Quik-Cell caps $1890), Quik-Cell 5000 Cell Starter Kit $875), Quick-Cell cells $50), Quik-Cap electrode repair kits $25), AgCl Electrodes (10 $246), AgCl 1.5 M sintered electrode $20), NuPrep Prepping Paste (30 $24), Conductive Gel $36) $11,002 Neuroscan System Maintenance and Support. The Neuroscan system and acquisition software require an annual fee of $2500 for software updates and system maintenance. Without this fee, unexpected problems could result in a substantial future outlay of technology funds to replace the amplifiers and/or acquisition software. $2,500 Netstation System Maintenance and Support. The EGI amplifier and Netstation software require an annual fee of $2500 for software updates and system maintenance. Without this fee, unexpected problems could result in a substantial future outlay of technology funds to replace the amplifiers and/or software. $2,500 General Supplies. Cleaning gloves ($20), medical soap $14), adhesive electrode washers $12), tape and application tools ($100). $246 EEG Technician. CFT funds are requested to hire an EEG technician to maintain our EEG systems, train users, and provide on-site support. Up to 20 hours of service time and support is anticipated. A technician we have used in the past has offered us a discounted flat rate of $500 for the work. $500 IV. Undergraduate Computer Laboratory Two years ago we used CFT funds to set up a new undergraduate computer lab for psychology majors (Clark C80) that is open 40 hours per week. It was expanded last year, such that it now has 26 workstations and two workgroup laser printers. We wish to pay work-study students to open and monitor the lab 40 hours per work for all 32 weeks of the regular academic year, and renew the SPSS licenses for the 26 workstations. Salary for lab monitors. (40 hours/wk, 32 weeks, $4/hr for our share of work study pay) $5,120 SPSS Annual Licenses. $32) $832 V. C72 and C79 Teaching Labs A computer-based laboratory is currently set-up in Clark C-72 to house the Cognitive Psychology Lab, Applied Cognitive Psychology Lab, and Sensation & Perception Lab courses, and another is set up in C-79 to house the Social Psychology, Measurement and Testing, Industrial, and Organizational Laboratory courses. In total, sections of these labs are offered each year, serving well over 500 students per year. SPSS annual licenses are needed to support statistical analyses in these courses. $32) $1184

Page 8 of 8 VI. EEG supplies for Undergraduate Research Assistants and Thesis Students (PSY496, PSY498, PSY499) Dr. Troup currently runs a research lab that actively involves a large number of undergraduate research assistants and thesis students. In a typical term, 12 or more undergraduate research assistants register for three credits of PSY496 Group Study, PSY498 Research, or PSY499 Thesis. These students get hands-on experience with a state of the art EEG system in Dr. Troup s research lab, in which they set up, run, and collect EEG data. This experience culminates in submissions of abstracts and journal articles on which they are co-authors. There is also opportunity to conduct independent research with submission to Rocky Mountain Psychological Society, The Journal for Undergraduate Research and the annual Celebrate Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium at Colorado State University. This research activity is costly, however, because of the high costs of EEG supplies. In addition, Dr. Troup has been allowing her laboratory facility to be used for the EEG projects in the Biological Psychology Laboratory course during this past academic year, because of construction of the new wing of the Behavioral Sciences Building and some resulting problems that have come up (high electrical noise). It appears that it may be necessary to continue this temporarily, into next year, until the problems are resolved. Dr. Troup therefore requests that CFT funds be used to purchase EEG supplies for undergraduate research activities as part of her PSY496/498/499 courses, as well as any EEG projects for that are being run in her lab for PSY455. Quik-Cell Starter Kits. $925) $2775 Electrode Attach Packs. $14) $84 Electrodes, 1.5 length. $22) $132 Electrode repair kits. $22) $132 Alcohol Prep Pads and Alcohol. $7.50) $15 Conductive Gel, 32 oz. $40) $80 Non sterile gauze $6) $12 Cotton tip applicator $8) $16 Surgical tape 10 pack $20) $40 VII. Supplies, Maintenance, and Replacement Costs for Undergraduate Labs The Department of Psychology currently has four laboratory classrooms dedicated to undergraduate teaching that serve over 45 sections of seven different laboratory courses per year, serving several hundred students per year. We also have an undergraduate computer lab for psychology majors with 26 workstations and two workgroup-quality laser printers. It is estimated that we will need $6600 for supplies, such as paper and toner cartridges, for these labs. This figure is based on what has been used in recent years, plus the expectation that there will be significantly more paper and toner use now that the undergraduate computer lab is open. An estimated $2300 is also needed for the replacement of parts (drives, monitors, etc.), computer maintenance, and software. $8900
