2 Introduction This two year training in Integrative Psychosexual Therapy is aimed at practitioners working in the fields of counselling and psychotherapy, sexual health and/or complementary and alternative medicine. It runs for 10 monthly sessions on a Friday evening and all day Saturday in the first year, and all day Sunday in the second year plus a monthly supervision group. This course offers an opportunity for personal and professional development for those wishing to enhance their work with clients psychosexual health issues and is accredited by the National Council of Psychotherapists to Level 5 equivalent. The Centre for Psychosexual Health offers a new model for the understanding of human sexuality and psychosexual health which encompasses the body, mind, brain and heart, as well as the social and cultural environment. The Diploma explores clients sexual issues in terms of their therapeutic meaning and potential, rather than as dysfunction. It includes sexual education, information and self help tools. Participants will be enabled to support their clients within a therapeutic relationship to rediscover themselves sexually and to develop a more conscious sexual self-esteem. In the first year we prioritise personal exploration of sexual issues, returning to the same themes in the second year with a more clinical focus. This allows for a deepening of the emotional and academic aspects of this work. It provides a list of psychosexual therapists and supervisors, many of whom are graduates of this course. A low cost clinic is offered by some therapists, particularly those in the second year of training wishing to gain clinical experience. All practitioners are qualified, insured and undertake adequate supervision. The Centre for Psychosexual Therapy adheres to the codes of ethics and practices of UKCP, and COSRT. 2

3 Aims of the course To provide a professional training in psychosexual health for practitioners working in the fields of counselling/psychotherapy, sexual health and/or complementary and alternative medicine To provide innovative educational material about psychosexual health, the physiology and anatomy of sexuality, sensuality and body awareness To draw on a wide range of philosophies, including psychotherapy, systemic therapy, neuroscience, cognitive behavioural therapy, complementary therapies and traditional eastern and western sexual and relationship therapy To incorporate social and cultural awareness into the arena of psychosexual health, including sexual violence, sexual shame, sexual addiction, and physical and emotional sexual health Course Outline Year one is facilitated by Cabby Laffy, Polly McAfee and Olivier Cormier-Otaño. It will include educational, experiential and skills practice elements. Each Saturday will focus on a specific topic, as outlined below, for which materials and handouts will be provided. The day will include a morning group check-in, teaching slots, group work and discussion. The course requires an additional 12 hours private study per month for coursework, for further explorations and personal development, which will be allocated monthly. There will be a 3- hour reflective group on the Friday evenings to explore the course information and course work. To facilitate personal and professional development in the area of psychosexual health through an exploration of sexual identity, relationship issues, sacred sexuality and desires for a sexual future To develop professional skills to work with a range of psychosexual issues, including common sexual difficulties, sexual shame, sexual addiction and recovery from sexual violence To provide skills practice in working with individuals, couples and groups To include a strong experiential theme throughout the course To learn through reflective exercises, small and large group work, including role-plays of real client issues, and peer supervision To develop an Integrative Model for Psychosexual Therapy, a holistic understanding of sexuality and a model for psychosexual health To provide CPD training to recognised standards, as outlined below Year two is facilitated by Cabby Laffy. It will develop the first year s curriculum of educational, experiential and skills practice elements, while focusing on applying theory to practice. Each Sunday will also address specific topics. The day will include a morning group check-in, presentations by participants, skills practice, peer supervision and discussion. There will be a minimum of 12 hours of private study monthly for assigned coursework. There will be a 3-hour supervision group usually on the Friday evenings or the Monday mornings around the course weekend dates. 3

5 Course Requirements Year one course members will be required to: complete 210 hours by attending all 10 monthly groups on both Friday and Saturday, and through a minimum of 12 hours of private study monthly for assigned coursework submit one piece of written work per month, which is a reflection on the month s topic and coursework complete a substantial project, entitled My Sexual Future, which will be developed over the year and shared with the group. It can be a 3,500 word essay or case study, or an equivalent (it could be a piece of art or music, for example) Year two course members will be required to: complete 210 hours by attending all 10 monthly supervision groups, Sunday course dates and through a minimum of 12 hours of private study monthly for assigned coursework submit one piece of reflective homework per month complete two written projects: A case study of 3,500 words A piece of research for presentation to the group: each person will hold one teaching slot during the year, by arrangement with Cabby, focusing on an area of specific interest complete 120 hours of supervised psychosexual client work, and: keep a log of all client hours, showing a range of clients and psychosexual health issues receive adequate one-to-one supervision with an accredited psychosexual therapist for clinical work, for a minimum of 10 hours. (10 supervision hours are provided through group supervision and paid for within the course) have professional indemnity insurance for their client work apply for professional membership All course members will be required to: have qualifications and approval/accreditation with appropriate professional organisations complete all course admin and homework by work with a study partner throughout the course receive adequate personal supervision for their clinical work have adequate professional indemnity insurance for their clinical work have support for personal development aspects of the course sign a student agreement form Course Fees The course fee of 5,000 is payable in advance, or in two annual payments of 2,500. You may pay over the course duration, which would require a non-refundable deposit of 200, with the balance payable in 20 monthly installments of 240, to be set up before the course starts. Some negotiations and concessions are available upon request. 5

6 Assessment Assessment will be based on the completion of all requirements and through individual, peer and tutor review. You will be asked to complete a review form half way through and at the end of the course, and to have an individual assessment with Cabby to discuss your projects and your progress on the course. You are invited onto this course as an adult learner and are asked to care for yourself with regard to material which might arise for you. Course Recognition This course is accredited by the National Council of Psychotherapists. The Diploma in Integrative Psychosexual Therapy includes a much wider remit than the medical model of many psychosexual trainings, which focus on physical sexual dysfunction within a reproductive and heteronormative model of sex. It is expected that this course will enhance your current qualifications and therapeutic practice, to include skills and competence to work with psychosexual health issues. Those practitioners already qualified or accredited as counsellors will be eligible to apply for accreditation as a psychosexual Therapist, having completed a two year training course. The first year of the course provides 210 CPD hours; the second year 210 CPD hours, plus 120 clinical practice hours. Accreditation as a Psychosexual Therapist is via individual application, regardless of whether courses are approved. Further clinical practice of a minimum of 80 supervised hours is required. 7 Clinical Team Course Tutor OLIVIER CORMIER- OTAÑO is a BACP accredited relational counsellor, a psychosexual therapist (graduate of the Centre for Psychosexual Health Diploma), and a qualified supervisor. He is a clinical associate with Pink Therapy and a trainer on several of their training programmes, including their Diploma in Gender and Sexual Diversity Therapy. He also teaches on the Intermediate Certificate in Contemporary Psychotherapy run by BeeLeaf and for various organisations. Olivier has worked extensively for over 9 years with addiction, relationship, intimacy, gender and sexual diversity issues, diverse cultures, sex and sexuality. Olivier offers sessions in English, French and Spanish to couples and individuals and has been running a diversity of groups. Course Tutor POLLY MCAFEE (nee McLean) is a graduate of the Diploma in Psychosexual Therapy, and also holds an M.A. from the Institute of Education and a certificate from the Institute of Group Analysis. She has undertaken group work training with Nick Totton. She facilitates women s sexuality groups incorporating the breath and energy techniques of sacred sexuality along with the educational, behavioural and therapeutic aspects of psychosexual work. She is passionate about people experiencing sexuality as an integral and joyful part of themselves, and about the potential of group work to assist with this journey. Course Director and Course Tutor CABBY LAFFY brings a refreshing and unique approach to psychosexual health, integrating 20 years of personal and professional development. Her work aims to redress our lack of sexuality education, address social and cultural issues, and to promote psychosexual health. Seeing sexuality as the creativity and vitality of fire energy, she includes our bodies and minds, our brains and emotions, ourselves and others. Cabby has been a facilitator of training and workshops since She also works as a psychotherapist and supervisor with individuals and couples, and has been a clinical supervisor for complementary health practitioners working in the community. She is a UKCP registered and NCP accredited psychotherapist, a COSRT accredited psychosexual therapist, an educator and group facilitator, and a member of PCSR.
