NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming. It s rather an unhelpful phrase for a simple concept: the study, modelling and adoption of excellence. We intrinsically know that when we become expert at something we are largely unconsciously competent at just how good we are. Have you ever driven on a long journey only to think at the end how did I get here? your unconscious has taken over and done the driving. It s pretty much the same for many of the things people excel at. Try asking a craftswoman about the essential elements that make up her talent, she d be hard pressed to describe the way she creates her art. NLP is a set of tools and techniques that can uncover the structure or genius behind this excellence. The essential difference that makes the difference. NLP s origin is in the 1970 s during the early days of computer science. Linguist John Grinder and computer scientist Richard Bandler postulated that they could encode excellence by studying the way in which exemplary leaders in their fields went about their business. To this end they worked with amongst others Walt Disney on his creative process, Milton Erickson s hypnotic persuasive language, Virginia Satyr s work on family conflict and Fritz Perls work in therapy. They also sought to employ the thinking of anthropologist Gregory Bateman and psychoanalyst Carl Yung to unlock the deeper and unconscious strategies employed. Once they began testing and teaching the models they created (see hypothesis 6 below), they realised they were onto something. In the ensuing years many others have developed the tools further, often with outstanding results; Tony Robbins, Heidi Heron, Robert Dilts and Derren Brown. Bandler and Grindler continue to practice to this day. Of course, we can also get really good at things that may not be particularly helpful - stress, anxiety, self-sabotage, feeling low, destructive relationships, procrastination et al. If we can unlock the patterns of how we do these unhelpful behaviours we can find new and more helpful alternatives.
NLP is a generative process, not a diagnosing process, the whole ethos is in generating new options, ideas and flexibility to nudge ourselves in the direction we choose. NEURO concerned with the structures and activity of the brain. Recent work in neuroscience is very much validating some of the thinking behind NLP. For instance we are increasingly understanding how incredibly adaptable / malleable the structure of the brain is in how it develops over time and what it turns its attention too. LINGUISTIC concerned with how we communicate, both verbally and non-verbally, with the world around us. We cannot not communicate! Every cell in our bodies is interacting and regulating itself with the outside world. Understanding the patterns and reaction to the world that we get good at can be very helpful in working out what we are giving out verbally and non-verbally. PROGRAMMING is the way in which the system we operate creates beliefs, behaviours and habits to navigate the world unconsciously. By understanding the programmes we can develop ourselves in the most helpful direction. NLP has a set of Guiding Hypotheses: The philosophy behind NLP has a number of hypotheses that we act as if are true when we generate our models. 1. Everyone has a unique model of the world the map is not the territory. 2. The map is not the territory we can only create a subjective version of the world in our heads through generalisation, deletion and distortion. 3. People are not their behaviours. 4. The most flexible people have the most influence over a system. 5. People make the best choices available to them in a given context: they have a positive intent. 6. If one person can do something then any human can (barring physiological or psychological constraints). 7. The meaning of your communication is the response you get. 8. You cannot not communicate. 9. There is no such thing as failure, only feedback. 10. You have all the resources you need. 11. People are not broken; they become better and better at what they do. They might have just got very good at things that are not helpful to them!

Resource Treasure Hunt What is it? We use this helpful technique to wire in resourcefulness ahead of stretching situations we may encounter. When we prepare for a big event such as a challenging presentation, an interview or the first time doing something in a new job it helps to be mindful of the great inner resources you ve picked up through life that can help you in the current situation. Today we will do this exercise in pairs but once you ve run through it, you can equally and as effectively mentally run through it before that big event. Before you begin Remember back to some great moments when you experienced each of the following resourceful states. Here are some examples: Resourceful State Feeling really curious Your Example Experiencing a real desire to learn Having a sense of adventure A sense of wonder and awe Having great fun
The Process I. Locate, create and experience each experience on your Timeline 1. Beside your timeline, place a marker on each selected resource moment and your Now. 2. For each moment, create a movie of yourself in that resource moment on the timeline. 3. From beside your Timeline 'step into' one of the movies and re-experience it. Totally immerse yourself in the experience, and relive as much as possible including, sights, sounds, emotions, feelings and smells. (Take your time). 4. Step off the Timeline and then do it for each of the other moments - until you have relived them all. II. Travel along the Timeline collecting up the resourceful moments 1. Through Time: Step onto your Timeline just before the first of the resource moments. Have a sense of that moment in front of you. Now step onto the resource moment and relive it, then move forward into just before the next, again stopping only briefly until you have relived the moment. Continue until you have associated with all four resource moments. Finally come forward into the Now on your timeline and then step off. 2. Pause briefly: Do the same again. This time pause momentarily in each of the resource moments. 3. Scatter forward from Now : Repeat a third time, and when you get to Now scatter lots of moments throughout your future. III. Send and receive a message from your Future Me 1. Into the future: Come forward in an energised manner - and with a pose that captures the resources you have collected. Pause very briefly in Now, then walk forward into a few months from now. 2. Take some time to remain in this 'Future Me' moment, experience living life with all the resources you have just collected. Remember to fully immerse. 3. When ready, turn round and look at the 'you' of today and send yourself a secret and silent message. 4. Step off your Timeline, go back and step into Now. Receive the message and silently respond to it. There is no need to discuss or share your experience right away or at all. It is advisable to not discuss the silent message; after all it was meant for you. Notes:
The Timeline Resource Search is a great technique to take forward and can be used in any number of situations, especially when you are facing a new challenge and are finding it difficult to summon the resources you need. Once you have run through the steps a couple of times you will be able to go through the Timeline Resource Search without anyone even noticing.
