2 Participant Workbook Leaders who are value creators realize leadership is not about them but about the people they are serving. In other words, they are servant leaders. They understand there are two parts of servant leadership: 1. A visionary or strategic role the leadership aspect of servant leadership 2. An implementation or operational role the servant aspect of servant leadership Visionary/Strategic Leadership Responsible Responsive The traditional pyramid hierarchy is effective for the leadership aspect of servant leadership. People look to the leader for vision and values. While the leader should involve experienced people in shaping direction, culture/values, and strategic imperatives, the ultimate responsibility remains with the leader and cannot be delegated to others. Set Your Sights on the Right Target Be the Employer of Choice and create a motivating environment for your people Be the Provider of Choice and take care of your customers Be the Investment of Choice by being sound financially Have an agreed-upon, compelling vision The Ken Blanchard Companies. 4 Participant Workbook Compelling Vision* Who are we (our purpose)? Where are we going (our picture of the future)? What will guide our journey (our values)? Our picture of the future Everyone, everywhere is trained to lead at a higher level Every organization is led by people leading at a higher level People are motivated to lead at a higher level by observing people who lead at a higher level Our mission To unleash the potential and power in people and organizations for the greater good. Our operating values Ethical Behavior Doing the right thing Relationships Developing mutual trust and respect Success Operating a profitable and well-run organization Learning Always growing, inquiring, and developing *Ken Blanchard and Jesse Stoner, Full Steam Ahead!, 2nd Edition (San Francisco, CA: Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc., 2011) The Ken Blanchard Companies. 5 Participant Workbook The Leader as Value Creator Implementation/Operational Leadership Implementation or operational leadership living according to the vision and values is where most leaders and organizations get into trouble. The traditional pyramid is kept alive and well, leaving the customers uncared for at the bottom of the hierarchy. All the energy in the organization moves up the hierarchy as people try to please and be responsive to their bosses, leaving the customer contact people to just quack and say, It s our policy, I just work here, or Do you want to talk to my boss? Responsible Responsive Effective implementation requires turning the pyramid upside down so the customer contact people are at the top of the organization and can be responsible able to respond and soar like eagles while leaders serve and are responsive to the needs of employees helping them to accomplish goals and to live according to the vision and values of the organization. Developing a Compelling Personal Vision Who are you (your mission)? Where are you going (your obituary)? What will guide your journey (your values)? 2014 The Ken Blanchard Companies. 8 Participant Workbook My Obituary Ken Blanchard was a loving teacher and example of simple truths whose books and speeches on leadership and management helped him and others to be aware of the presence of God in their lives and to realize we are here to serve, not to be served. He was a caring child of God, son, brother, spouse, father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother-in-law, godfather, uncle, cousin, friend, and colleague who strove to find a balance between success, significance, and surrender. He had a spiritual peace about him that permitted him to say no in a loving manner to people and projects that got him off purpose. He was a person of high energy who was able to see the positive in any event. No matter what happened, Ken was able to find learning or a message in it. Ken Blanchard was someone who trusted God s unconditional love and believed he was the beloved. He valued integrity, walked his talk, and was a mean and lean 185 lb. flexible golfing machine. He will be missed because wherever he went, he made the world a better place for his having been there. Your Obituary The Ken Blanchard Companies. All rights reserved. Do not duplicate 18492A
