3 A BRIEF OVERVIEW What is tapping How do we tap What (issues) can we tap The tapping points 1. What is 'TAPPING' The correct name for tapping is Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. I have heard tapping referred to as 'acupuncture without the needles'. I believe this to be a pretty good explanation. In the Chinese culture and particularly acupuncture, healing is brought about by clearing 'energy blockages' using very fine needles, strategically placed along the bodies meridians. Specifically we tap on spots on the face and the upper body. In EFT/tapping we use our fingers and we tap along the bodies meridians to also clear energy blockages. Tapping can be done by just about anyone, anywhere for many problems where there is an emotional connection. 2. How do we Tap We use our fingers to tap on various parts of our head, face and torso while talking out loud about the specific issue we wish to release. We gently tap use two fingers (the index and middle fingers) and we tap each spot 5 8 times. There is no need to use force gently tapping is all that is required, whilst saying out loud the negative emotion. 3. WHAT CONDITIONS/issues RESPOND TO EFT/TAPPING anxiety fears fear of failure, of the future, of success, heights, flying phobias grief trauma and abuse PTSD post traumatic stress disorder self-esteem and self-confidence issues eating disorders addictions physical symptoms, aches and pains
4 insomnia removing performance blocks in speaking, studying, sport and business procrastination weight loss addictions Importantly, tapping can also be used to enhance performance for students, athletes etc. It is not just something to be used to overcome negative emotions and self-talk. 4. The Tapping Points EFT TAPPING POINTS: 1. Eye brow (at the point where the eyebrow begins closest to the nose) 2. Side of eye 3. Under eye 4. Under nose 5. Chin 6. Collarbone or chest 7. Top of Head
5 A FULL TAPPING SEQUENCE: Part 1: The Set-up Statement Part 2: The Tapping Sequence Part 1: the Set-up Statement first you need to identify the problem or issue that you want to address and then define it. For this example lets use anger, as that s a problem that most of us can identify with. Let s say, that you feel angry at the way someone has spoken to you. Think back to the event and identify any other emotions and feelings e.g. the person s rudeness, unfairness, your annoyance. You may have even experienced some physical symptoms like tightness in your chest or a knot in your stomach. Generally you will also become aware of a limiting belief or unwanted behaviour. Now that you have defined the problem, we can add a phrase about the issue and self acceptance this is called the Set-up Statement. Even though I feel so angry at (the person s name), I deeply and completely accept myself. OR Even though I feel so angry at (the person s name), I choose to feel peaceful and loving. Some people may not currently accept themselves, that's why I have the optional statement and it also indicates a decision has been made to change that. The Set-up Statement is repeated 3 times whilst tapping on the karate chop spot.
6 Part 2: The Tapping Sequence Now you are ready to tap the meridians to clear the resistance or blockage in your body's energy system. Eyebrow (Bladder meridian) at the beginning of the eyebrow. Side of the eye (Gall Bladder) on the bone at the outside edge of the eye Under the eye (stomach) on the bone, under the eye Under the nose (Governor) in the middle of the hollow under the nose Chin (central/conception) midway between the point of the chin and the bottom of your lip Collarbone (kidney) find the hollow in the throat and feel the two heads of the collarbones on either side. You can tap just one or both. Another way (and easier) is to simply tap the chest area with open hands Under the arm (spleen/pancreas) underneath the armpit approx level with the nipple. Top of head When you start to tap on the points, its important to focus on the specific problem this can be a word or a short phrase which describes the problem. For the example we are using I'm angry at (person's name) would be sufficient. To enable you to measure how very effective tapping is, its a good idea to give the intensity of the emotion a score between is the bottom end of the scale there are no emotions present and you feel calm and relaxed. 5 you feel uncomfortable, but you can stand it. 8 this is where the discomfort really is severe and is impacting on you in a negative way. 10 the discomfort is as intense as it can get. After each round of tapping, reassess your level of discomfort. For example, when you started tapping on the specific emotion, you may have assessed your discomfort at level 9. After the first round of tapping, your level of discomfort may have shifted down to a 5 or 6 or even less. Continue tapping, until your discomfort level has reduced to a 1 or even a 0.
