2 Leaderships Skills The ability to quickly establish and comfortable maintain effective interpersonal relationships with a wide range of people and groups reflects the Social Awareness EI.

3 Social Awareness and Empathy Skills These two are interdependent and necessitate an assertive communication styles.

4 Decision-Making Reasoning and emotions are interactive and are both essential for person-centered leadership. Intuitive wisdom is a major contribution of the emotional mind. It provides the energy and stamina to move you toward your goals.

5 Positive Influence The initiative and goal-directed component of Positive Influence is also a contribution of the emotional mind. When you apply this to problem-solving you act more than you react.

6 Social Awareness Is a by-product of interpersonal awareness and our actual behavior when relating to others. It s the ability to affect others positively.

7 Leadership Skills: Comfort A positive leader is socially aware and feels the needs of the people who work around her. She shows them that she truly understands them. By being honest and self-assured, she gains their trust and cooperation.

8 Practice Choose a partner and take turns practicing these leadership skills. You ve requested a meeting with your employee, Paul or Sonja because someone complained that he/she was rude to them. As the employee, practice being assertive in your explanation. Active listening is an important skill to develop in order to accurately understand what others are saying. As the employer, practice paraphrasing what he/she says to you; while at the same time using strategies in Step E on page 77.

9 Empathy Is a state of mind that allows you to understand and feel what others feel. An empathetic person is a good listener and is patient, compassionate, openminded and non-judgmental.

10 Accurate Empathy Involves communicating to the sender that he/she has been heard, understood, and accepted as a person.

11 Practice How could you change the statements in Step E to reflect accurate empathy? Take turns being the boss and the employee with your partner.

12 Decision-Making Is the ability to use effective problemsolving and conflict resolution strategies to resolve issues. It involves both science and art.

13 Learn Accept the fact that living means having and coping with problems. Recognize and identify problems as they occur. Hold back your first impulse to respond or do nothing and focus on what emotion the situation is producing, don t deny the feeling.

14 Apply and Model Brainstorm a problem for you to work on with your partner and one for your partner to work on. Write it down on page 88. Now brainstorm 3 possible solutions for that problem on page 89. Then give the positive and negative consequences for that problem. In # 3 decide on the best consequence and evaluate your results.

15 Exercise On page 90 use this opportunity to write down your problem-solving process. Do: A-E

16 Positive Influence Is a behavioral reflection of selfempowerment, goal-directed skills. It s a set of personal and goal-directed behaviors that create consensus and momentum which helps you to gain active support of others.

17 Positive Influence Is grounded in positive self-esteem, guided by clear personal values and demonstrated by proactive, self-confident behaviors. It is the sum total of behaviors that are observable by others and evaluated as valuable and as meaningful directions to be followed.

18 Qualities of an Effective Leader You re an effective leader when your relationships are characterized by: honesty, trust, empathy, integrity, dependability and a respect for diversity
