Co-mentor (with Heather Lench) for Melody Moore, who completed an individual project as an Undergraduate Research Honors Scholar, Her honors thesis focused on the effects of the experience of meaning on subsequent choice. She found that participants who had viewed meaningful stimuli for an extended period of time experienced greater feelings of inspiration, and subsequently desired even more meaningful stimuli, compared to others. These findings suggest that people do not become satiated with meaningful stimuli in the same way they do other positive stimuli and experiences. She presented her findings at Student Research Week in During her time in the laboratory, Melody also was recruited as a summer intern at the prestigious Dan Gilbert lab at Harvard. Melody is currently a PhD student in social psychology at the University of California, Irvine. Co-mentor (with Joyce Ehrlinger) for Audra Biermann and Marissa Ballard, who were awarded an Undergraduate Research Grant by the at Washington State University ($700) for an undergraduate research project. Audra and Marissa employed novel behavioral manipulations of boredom and disgust to compare differences in reported motivation between the emotions. They found that participants in the disgust condition reported a greater desire for meaning than those in the boredom condition. This finding suggests that disgust might also encourage the pursuit of meaningful stimulation. They presented their findings at the Washington State University Research Symposium in Audra and Marissa, with Kennedy Bierniasz, Crystal Cady, Paul Collop, and Claire Ellis (other undergraduate students working in the lab), also applied for a College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Innovators Initiative Grant ($5, not funded). These grants are awarded to support outstanding undergraduate research and the project was designed to supplement projects in the lab focusing on the impact of mindset on academic performance.
