1 Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute presents A Developmental Perspective on Working with Adolescents and Adults Jack Novick and Kerry Kelly Novick May 20-21, 2016 Friday evening & Saturday morning Arboretum Graham Visitors Center 2300 Arboretum Drive E, Seattle, WA (Free parking available) Jack and Kerry Kelly Novick are noted child, adolescent and adult psychoanalysts who trained with Anna Freud. They will elaborate on the developmental perspective they bring to clinical work in two presentations, and will explore the childhood roots of OCD, sadomasochism and other psychological structures. They have proposed a developmental model based on two distinct kinds of conflict resolution and self-regulation: an open system, attuned to inner and outer reality and characterized by joy, competence and creativity; and, a closed system, which avoids reality and is characterized by sadomasochism, omnipotent beliefs and stasis. We are also offering a pre-conference seminar on the Novicks work: Thursday evening, May 12, 2016 Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute 4020 East Madison Street, Suite 230, Seattle, WA 98112

2 On Friday evening, the Novicks will use clinical material from the treatment of a late adolescent to illustrate their understanding of OCD as a sadomasochistic construction. Although people suffering from OCD are now rarely referred for psychodynamic treatment, the Novicks will demonstrate why they believe that psychoanalysis remains the treatment of choice for these problems. They will demonstrate how their two-systems model of self-regulation can help us understand and treat individuals with severe personality disorders, including OCD. On Saturday, the Novicks will demonstrate how they listen for and work with the persistence of the past in the present. In the clinical situation, each individual s network of relationships in childhood and adolescence manifests in the transference, in the therapeutic alliance, in the intersubjective experience, and in their account of relationships outside treatment. But we can only track these derivatives if we are listening for them. In this workshop, the Novicks will describe specific dimensions to attend to, suggest techniques for including the internalized parent-child relationship in the treatment focus, and demonstrate the enriched outcomes that result. Melissa Stoker, MS a member of the SPSI faculty, will present her work with an adult in analysis, and the Novicks will illustrate how they listen to and would work with developmental derivatives in this case. In preparation for this colloquium, we will offer a pre-conference seminar focusing on the Novicks two-systems model of self-regulation on Thursday evening, May 12, which will take place at SPSI. Martin Bullard, LICSW will review and explore the concepts in this model, and their application to clinical work, and facilitate a discussion. Participants are encouraged to read the following papers: 1) Novick, J., Novick, K.K. (2001). Two Systems of Self-Regulation. Psychoanalytic Social Work, 8: ) Novick, J., Novick, K.K. (2003).
