Harmony in the Family the Basic Unit of Human Interaction Video Session Story of Stuff

Slide 2 of 17 Self-exploration, Self-investigation, Self-study 1. Content of Self Exploration: a. Desire (pkguk) - Aim, Purpose Happiness, Prosperity Continuity b. Program (djuk) Process of achieving the desire, action Happiness = To be in Harmony To understand Harmony & to live in harmony at all 4 levels: 1. Harmony in the Human Being 2. Harmony in the Family 3. Harmony in the Society 4. Harmony in Nature/Existence 2. Process of Self Exploration Self-verification

Slide 3 of 17 Family is the Basic Unit of Human Interaction Family (Parivara): Group of individuals living in relationship of mutual fulfillment ensuring Right Understanding and Prosperity for all. The Family is a natural Laboratory and Learning ground to understand the Harmony in Relationship with Human Beings. The Family is a natural Laboratory and Learning ground to practice it in terms of its fulfillment, evaluation and ensuring mutual Happiness before we extend this to every unit in the Society and then to Nature. Each one of us is naturally a part of a family that includes Father, Mother, Brothers, Sisters. Then there are other relations such as Grand parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces etc. These relationships are a reality of our life for each one of us. We are born in these relationships.

Slide 4 of 17 Family is the Basic Unit of Human Interaction A child starts interacting with Mother, Father and other members in the family, and starts understanding relationship. We also have friends and colleagues with whom we interact frequently. Be it in our School, our neighbourhood or our College - Friends are a significant part of our lives for all of us. We have Teachers who enables us to learn and understand various things in life. We have recognised and identifies these individuals, that we feel, understand us, have similar intersts or tastes and we have an affinity for them.

Slide 5 of 17 Family is the Basic Unit of Human Interaction Besides our Home, College, we live in a bigger social orders, where a whole a range of relationships support the existence of our family. The grocery shop keeper, milkman, washerman, maid or helper in the house etc., each one of them brings a certain value to our living. We can look deep into this chain of Social dependency and find that there is still a bigger web of interdependency. Such Relationships are abundant and a reality in each of our lives. Starting from our Family and including our Teachers, Friends and all the different social relationships each one of us is born and lives in such relationships. This is an indivisible part of our living. Family is the foundation of Society, and provides the basis of continuity of Human tradition on the Earth.

Slide 6 of 17 Family is the Basic Unit of Human Interaction Human being gets the opportunity to interact, understand, fulfill, share and work in mutual relationships living in a Family.

Slide 7 of 17 Harmony in the Family 1. Relationship is and it exists between one self (I 1 ) and other self (I 2 ). 2. The Self (I) has feelings in a relationship These feelings are between one self (I 1 ) and other self (I 2 ). 3. These feelings in the Self (I) can be recognized they are definite (9 Feelings) 4. Recognizing and fulfilling these feelings leads to mutual happiness in a Relationship. We will explore into each of the above in detail.

Slide 13 of 17 Feelings (Values) in Human Relationships 1. Relationship is between one self (I 1 ) and other self (I 2 ) 2. There are feelings in relationship in one self (I 1 ) for other self (I 2 ) 3. These feelings can be recognized they are definite (9 Feelings) 4. Their fulfilment, evaluation leads to mutual happiness Feelings (Values) in relationship: 1- Trust fo okl FOUNDATION VALUE 2- Respect leeku 3- Affection Lusg 4- Care eerk 5- Guidance okrly; 6- Reverence J)k 7- Glory xksjo 8- Gratitude rkrk 9- Love izse COMPLETE VALUE Are these feelings Naturally Acceptable to You? When you live with these feelings, does it lead to your happiness? When you express these feelings to the other, does it lead to the happiness of the other?

Slide 14 of 17 Feelings (Values) in Human Relationships Feelings (Values) in relationship: 1- Trust fo okl FOUNDATION VALUE 2- Respect leeku 3- Affection Lusg 4- Care eerk 5- Guidance okrly; 6- Reverence J)k 7- Glory xksjo 8- Gratitude rkrk 9- Love izse COMPLETE VALUE The Feelings in relationship are the Values in Relationship. All the Feelings (Values) are already within you Understanding only makes you aware and once you are aware of it, there is continuity of these Feelings and you are able to fulfill them.

Slide 15 of 17 Feelings (Values) in Human Relationships Feelings (Values) in relationship: 1- Trust fo okl FOUNDATION VALUE 2- Respect leeku 3- Affection Lusg 4- Care eerk 5- Guidance okrly; 6- Reverence J)k 7- Glory xksjo 8- Gratitude rkrk 9- Love izse COMPLETE VALUE Trust is the Foundation Value of Relationship i.e., Relationships starts only when we have Trust, and Love is the complete Value. We will discuss in detail about these Feelings (values) in succeeding Lectures.

Slide 16 of 17 Harmony in the Family Relationships in a Family or in a Society are not created, they just are. We can understand these releationships and based upon this understanding, it will be natural to have right feelings (Values) in these relationships. These Feelings are definite and can be recognized with certainty. Recognizing the relationship and having the feelings in relationship is an activity of the Self ('I') and not of the Body. It becomes clear that Relationship is between the Self ('I') and the other Self ('I') and the feelings are also between 'I' and 'I'. Mutual fultilment is the natural outcome of a relation correctly recognized and lived.

Slide 17 of 17 Justice (Nyaya): Justice = Recognition of Values (definite feelings) in relationship, their fulfilment, the right evaluation of the fulfilment resulting in Mutual Happiness (Ubhay-tripti). Thus, there are four elemnts of Justice: Recognition of Values, fulfilment, evaluation and mutual happiness ensured. When all the four ensured, Justice is ensured. Mutual fulfilment is the hallmark of Justice. And Justice is essential in all relationships, be it with the small kid in your house, your old grandpa, the maid in the house, your friends or distant relations. We need to grow up in relationships to ensure continuity of justice in all our relationships.

Slide 18 of 17 Justice (Nyaya): What do you think Do we want Justice only on few occasions or every moment? What do you think - Will the Justice will be ensured in the Family amoung Human Beings or courts of Law? In how many relationships and on how many occasions, are we presently able to ensure justice? These questions relevant in our daily life. We tend to feel that we are being subjected to injustice (anyaya). But, we seldom evaluate how just we are in our interactions. We see partition of houses, family quarels, enmity in relationships so often..all these are the outcome of the injustice that starts in the relations at some point of time.

Slide 19 of 17 What is the State Today? Recognizing Relationships with others based only on the Body:- We are unable to see ourselves as co-existence of the Self ('I') and the Body. As a result, we see ourselves as a Body and we also see the other as a body and we subsequently reduce our relationships and the feelings in the relationship to the level of our body. Our ability to see relationships with other Human Beings depends on whether we are able to see the relationship at the level of 'I'. At this level, slowly you will find that nobody is a stranger. The Feelings in relationship are the same with every human being, only that we are not aware of them. This is we are going to explore in detail as we proceed further.

Slide 20 of 17 What is the State Today? Relationships larlgely based on the Exchange of Physical Goods:- As a result of mistaken assumptions of us being only the Body and the relationship with other being only at the level of Body, we have reduced our expectations in relationships to fulfilment of Physial facilities. We evaluate all our relationships in terms of material things like Money, property etc. The purpose of relationship has been reduced to physical and material needs and its exchange. Hence, we feel that working for physical facilities alone is enough.

Slide 22 of 17 Harmony in Relationships = 'Justice' (from Family to the World Family) Justice starts from our Family and slowly expands to the World Family. Family Relationship recognized, fulfilled and evaluated leading to mutual happiness. Undivided Society ¼v[k.M lekt½ - Feeling of being related to every Human Being. Universal Human Order ¼lkoZHkkSe O;oLFkk½ Feeling of being related to every unit. Harmony in Individual Family Society Nature entire Existence

Slide 23 of 17 Harmony in Relationships = 'Justice' (from Family to the World Family) Harmony in Individual Family Society Nature entire Existence We want Harmony at all levels of living. Harmony in the Family is the building block for Harmony in the Society. Harmony in the Society makes an undivided society, which is the cherished desire of each one of us. We do not want Society to be divided on grounds of caste, creed, sex, race, beliefs. Harmony in Society can happen only when we are able to ensure Harmony in our Family, when we can learn to do 'Justice' in our family. Undivided Soceity¼v[k.M lekt½ leads to Universal Human Order¼lkoZHkkSe O;oLFkk½, where we are able to ensure synergetic living with plants, animals, air, water, soil, and every other unit, along with Human Beings.

Slide 24 of 17 Feelings (Values) in Human Relationships Feelings (Values) in relationship: 1- Trust fo okl FOUNDATION VALUE 2- Respect leeku 3- Affection Lusg 4- Care eerk 5- Guidance okrly; 6- Reverence J)k 7- Glory xksjo 8- Gratitude rkrk 9- Love izse COMPLETE VALUE Trust is the Foundation Value of Relationship i.e., Relationships starts only when we have Trust, and Love is the complete Value.

Slide 25 of 17 Establishing Harmony in Relationships is Justice. Trust is the Foundation Value. Trust and Respect are prominent Values while Love is the Complete Value.

Slide 26 of 17 Session 6 Question Bank List out the values in human to human relationships. Family is the Basic Unit of Human Interaction. Analyze with your examples? Relationship IS and it exists between one self (I 1) nd other self (I 2 ) support your answer. Mutual fulfillment is the hallmark of Justice. Apply this in your daily life.

Slide 27 of 17 Session 6 Question Bank What is your natural acceptance of using physical facilities? Discuss your daily life examples compare to Indulgence, abstinence and right utilization?

Slide 28 of 17 Video Session Story of Stuff Watch a 20 minute video "Story of Stuff". write down your observations about the following issues in the Note Book after you watch Video. What is the program of the people shown in the video? Is this program similar to your own program? What is the outcome from this program? Take around 5 to 10 minutes to write your observations in your Class Room Activity Note Book. We will discuss your observations in the Class.

Slide 29 of 17 Discussion Students can express their views on the issues while the Discussion is going on in the Class with the Teacher/Facilitator.

Slide 30 of 17 Problem (as shown in video) Solution (as shown in video) Production of unhealthy products with focus on profit vs purpose (eg. carcinogenic pillows) Exploitation of the people involved in production, consumption???? Over exploitation of natural resources?? Linear production process Cyclic production process Indulgence (influenced by media & marketing) 99% waste?? Recycling can help (but it will never be enough)

Slide 31 of 17 What is your Natural Acceptance: 1. Indulgence (bhog) - Use physical facility for sensation 2. Abstinence (tyag) - Abstain from physical facility use 3. Right Utilization (sadupyog) - Purposeful use of physical facility Symptoms of Indulgence: One is significantly influenced by external inputs (sensation, preconditioning) Over indulgence, copious consumption (ati bhog), 99% waste Profit-centric production Linear (not cyclic) production process Exploitation of the people involved in production, consumption Over exploitation of natural resources

Slide 32 of 17 What is your Natural Acceptance: 1. Indulgence (bhog) Use of physical facility, other for sensation 2. Abstinence (tyag) Abstain from physical facility, sensation, other #1 Developing Right Understanding 3. Right Utilization (sadupyog) Purposeful use of physical facility, sensation, other

Slide 33 of 17 Prevailing Notions of Happiness & Prosperity Happiness = Fulfillment of Desire? Happiness = Excitement? Happiness = Sensation? Happiness = Domination? Happiness = To be Unique? Continuous Happiness = Fulfillment of all Desires, Maximisation of Excitement, Maximisation of Pleasing Sensation, To be Most Dominant, To be Most Exclusive/Unique? Prosperity = Physical Facility? Continuous Prosperity = Maximum (Unlimited) Accumulation of Physical Facility? (even if it means struggling to meet the unlimited wants, since resources are limited)

Slide 34 of 17 An Appraisal of the Current Scenario At the level of the individual rising problems of depression, psychological disorders, stress, insecurity, trauma, health problems, loneliness... At the level of the family breaking of joint families, mistrust and insecurity in relationships, divorce, family feuds, legal suits. At the level of the society growing incidences of terrorism and naxalism, rising communalism, spreading casteism, racial and ethnic struggle, wars between nations, attempts of genocide, fear of nuclear and genetic warfare. At the level of nature global warming, water, air, soil, noise pollution, resource depletion of minerals and mineral oils, sizeable deforestations, loss of fertility of soil...

Slide 35 of 17 Animal Consciousness Human Consciousness 1. Physical Facility Sensation Happiness 2. Physical Facility Respect Happiness Undefined Quantity of Physical Facility (by any means) Accumulation of Physical Facility Prosperity Right Understanding & Right Feelings Happiness 1. Identification of Required Physical Facility 2. Production / Availability of Required Physical Facility Prosperity Assumptions Production of any Physical Facility by almost any means for profit (undefined limit) Right Understanding & Right Feeling Production of required Physical Facility by Avartansheel process for mutual fulfillment

Transformation (ladze.k) = Development (fodkl) Slide 36 of 17

Slide 37 of 17 I desire for happiness If I am not aware that right understanding and right feelings (trust respect love) in me is a source of happiness for me, Then I have only one option, i.e. to draw happiness from sensation, physical facility [even though I can see that the happiness by this method is not continuous] e.g. While I do not want to fight, a fight takes place I try to resolve it by giving a gift (tasty food, nice clothes etc.). Sometimes this used to work Now I can see that it only shifts the attention from the fight to the gift, and only for a short time In a few days, another fight takes place, and this time it is of greater intensity

Slide 38 of 17 Now I can see that it is due to lack of right understanding about relationship, and therefore, lack of fulfillment in relationship I have been trying to fill this gap by more & more sensation, physical facility The happiness I draw out of sensation, physical facility is not long lasting; I get bored by one sensation, physical facility so I go for another, yet another Now I can see that the happiness from having the right understanding and right feelings in myself is long lasting. I can now start paying attention to it I can also rightly evaluate the role of sensation, physical facility

Expressing these feelings to the other can be a source of happiness for the other leading to mutual happiness Slide 39 of 17
