2 DEVELOPING SELF-AWARENESS W O R K B O O K If you want to develop yourself to your fullest potential, you must master the art of selfawareness. On this path of personal exploration, you ll discover both positive and negative things about yourself. Some of them may even you. Self-awareness involves not just knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses, but also the ability to observe your thoughts. The final mystery is oneself. - Oscar Wilde DISCOVER YOUR TRUE SELF Do you identify yourself with your vocation or your role in your family or society? This is only a part of who you are. Uncovering your true self entails peeling away the many layers of your thoughts and beliefs until you get to your inner core. 2

3 Before you embark on this journey, understand that wanting to see your true self is essential. Facing your negative traits can be unsettling. If you are serious about expanding your levels of self-awareness however, the exercises that follow can help challenge your negative thoughts and beliefs as well as take steps to change them. Likewise they can help you hone those characteristics you find most constructive. TURN THE SPOTLIGHT WITHIN The world is your mirror. Bearing this in mind can help you develop your levels of selfawareness. You ll probably notice that at some level others reflect traits that you have within yourself, and that can sometimes make you feel uncomfortable. Detail a situation in your life where someone may have been exhibiting a negative trait you recognize within yourself. How did you respond? How did this make you feel? 4 WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHILE DEVELOPING SELF-AWARENESS Being self-aware means you know your goals and are willing to do what it takes to achieve them. You understand what contributes to your happiness as well as your sadness. You are deeply in touch with your values, beliefs, strengths, and weaknesses, and are aware that these affect the way you relate to others. 8 BE AWARE OF YOUR MOTIVATIONS Think about what motivates your actions and words. Whom do your actions benefit? Could they harm anyone? Do they? WHAT IS YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE? 10 How to Warm up Your Flexibility Muscle Learn how to master various situations by exercising your flexibility muscle. Sign your name with your dominant hand. Sign your name with your other hand. If you practice writing with your other hand, you ll find it gets easier. Gradually you can extend this flexibility to other areas of your life. This will expand your possibilities. 11 WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW? We are connected with everything in our world, in one way or another Watch this documentary. It helps you become more self-aware by combining spirituality with quantum physics. It demonstrates how our beliefs can create our circumstances and how we can affect water with thoughts, words and music. Keep in mind that our bodies are mostly composed of water. Imagine, if you can affect water so easily, how readily your body would respond to positive thinking. By increasing your levels of self-awareness, you truly can manifest whatever you desire! ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR NEGATIVE TRAITS Accepting our negative traits requires courage. Take the time to look deep inside yourself and write down what you find ~ right now. 15 Make a note of your preferences and habits. Write down your preferences and habits so you re aware of them and can change them if they are not serving you well. THINGS TO WATCH FOR WHEN THERE S CONFLICT Whenever you find yourself in a conflict situation, ask yourself whether the true core of the matter is your desire to prove you are right. If that s the case, you are most likely letting your Ego get the better of you. Check for negative emotions such as jealousy and anger whenever you feel stressed. 16 What conflict are you facing today? How is your ego contributing to the stress you feel in this situation? Can you think of a way to reduce the conflict by working on your innermost emotions? KEEP A JOURNAL Writing your thoughts and actions down every day is the best way to develop your selfawareness. WAYS TO DEVELOP SELF- AWARENESS Apart from making it a point to learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others, do the following: Decide on a set of core values that will serve you well in your day to day life. Consider traits such as humility, honesty and courage. Think about the values you are already living up to and those you would like to cultivate in the near future. Write them down. Choose 2-3excellent self-help books and commit to reading one chapter a day, every day. 19 Another excellent idea is to seek out others looking to increase their levels of selfawareness. Practicing the art of self-awareness can be much easier in the company of those who are interested in doing the same. Like-minded people can also help guide you and keep you focused when obstacles present themselves. Look for online forums as well as organizations in your local community. Make a note of possible places you could try: THE PRACTICE OF FOCUSING Are you in turmoil right now? If the answer is yes, take a step back and write down what s bothering you. Don t worry about the details. Just go with the overall feeling. Write down each thought as it comes to you. 21 WHO IS JAN MARIE MUELLER? Jan Marie Mueller is both enthusiastic about life and what she likes to call a brilliant thinker. Not brilliance as in exceptionally intelligent (that would be going too far!) but brilliant as in positive and innovative. She s also an avid personal growth advocate and dedicated to making whatever changes are necessary to reach the goals she chooses to set in life. 22 goals she d set. Whenever she got close to realizing her dreams, that nasty little voice inside her mind would whisper she didn t deserve success. To break out of that negative cycle, she decided she needed to begin thinking brilliantly feeding her mind with positive information, transforming her thought processes one by one ~ changing her life from the inside out. By using positive thoughts to silence the negative ones and committing to taking baby steps, day-by-day, she discovered she could give herself the invaluable gifts of unconditional love and nurturing as well as the power to live the life she had always dreamed of. She decided to stop accepting the status quo and take responsibility for her future. She started and built up a successful business. She learned to reach out to people, ask more questions, stand up for what she believed and follow through on those beliefs. It took courage and required her to push outside of her comfort zone, but once she got started she never looked back. Developing her levels of self-awareness was the first step. As she discovered her true self and learned to embrace her core identity, she also learned to love herself - flaws and all.
