5 What is Forensic Psychology? House Overview The American Board of Forensic Psychology defines forensic psychology as the application of the science and profession of psychology to questions and issues relating to law and the legal system. With applying your knowledge in the justice system, child protection services, juvenile justice, civil matters, and many other areas, the importance of forensic psychology can never be underestimated or over-emphasized. In many ways, graduates of this program will apply principles of psychology to a variety of situations is not only vital to the operation of our legal system, but often imperative to the preservation of individual rights. The field of Forensic Psychology is growing. In fact, it is recognized as one of the fastest growing subfields in psychology today by the American Psychological Association. 5

6 Careers Forensic Psychology is a fascinating subfield in psychology, offering a number of opportunities for career advancement. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for mental health professionals is expected to grow by 18% from 2008 to In addition to those in public service, graduates will also see expanding opportunities outside the courtroom in higher educational institutions, health care facilities, research centers, forensic labs, and police departments. 14 The M.A. in Forensic Psychology: Non- Licensure Track Program Learning Outcomes in The Chicago School Forensic Department 1. Students will develop and maintain effective professional relationships with clients, peers, supervisors, faculty, and other professionals. 2. Students will demonstrate fundamental knowledge of psychometric theory, assessment techniques, and forensic literature to evaluate various dimensions of human experience, outcomes of interventions, and psycholegal issues. 3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the research methods in the social and behavioral sciences, the benefits and limitations of research, and the scientific and professional literature relevant to the field of forensic psychology. 4. Students will recognize and respect individual and group differences as well as practice with cultural competence. 5. Students will organize professional activities by ethical and professional codes, standards, and guidelines; statutes, rules, and regulations; and relevant case law. 6. Students will integrate a basic knowledge of theory, research, and professional literature to guide interventions and promote optimal mental health and well-being. *** These outcomes are transferrable to many forensic careers
