3 Getting a Physical Exam A physical exam may be part of a routine doctor s visit. During the exam, the doctor may do some of the following: Measure height and weight. Check blood pressure to make sure your heart is pumping blood through your body. Check your body temperature. (Normal temperature is 97 to 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit or 36.1 to 37.5 degrees Celsius) Check body parts such as: o Heart and lungs o Eyes, ears, and nose o Teeth o Rectum o Abdomen o Skin o Spine During the routine visit, the doctor might also check: Reflexes (how certain joints react to sudden force) Hearing Vision The doctor might tell you to take a blood test. For this, a nurse or medical assistant will draw your blood from your finger or arm with a needle. The doctor might want to give you an immunization, which is a kind of shot. The shot could help protect you from diseases such as the flu or measles. Worksheet 4c Physical Exam

4 What are some tests the doctor might order? You have already given your doctor your medical history and he did the physical exam. Sometimes the doctor may ask for more information to check how your health is or to find the reason for your medical problem. For this, the doctor might ask for lab tests or medical imaging. A Lab Test may include taking a sample of blood, urine or something else from your body. The sample is usually taken while you are at the doctor s office. Then the sample is sent to the lab for testing. The results from the tests may be used to record changes in your health. It can also help the doctor plan your treatment. Medical Imaging Tools are like a camera, and take pictures of the inside of your body. Some types of imaging include: x-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and ultrasound. X-rays provide pictures of bones and thick tissue. Mammogram is a type of x-ray. CT or CAT Scan is a special x-ray. It takes pictures of different structures inside the body and gives the doctor information about your organs (for example: liver, heart, kidneys), blood vessels (which carry the blood through the body), bones, or brain. MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, helps to find tumors (or swelling of a part of your body), infection, and other types of soft tissue disease or damage. Ultrasound can find tumors, and can also help a pregnant woman to see the growth of her baby inside her uterus. Worksheet 4d Tests the Doctor Might Order

6 Ask Me3TM Good Questions for Your Good Health Every time you talk with a doctor, nurse, or pharmacist, use the Ask Me 3 questions to better understand your health. What is my main problem? What do I need to do? Why is it important for me to do this? When to Ask Questions You can ask questions when: You see your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. You prepare for a medical test or procedure. You get your medicine. What If I Ask and Still Don t Understand? Let your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist know if you still don t understand what you need to do. You might say, This is new to me. Will you please explain that to me one more time? Who Needs to Ask 3? Everyone wants help with health information. You are not alone if you find things confusing at times. Asking questions helps you understand how to stay well or to get better. The Ask Me 3 questions are designed to help you take better care of your health. To learn more, visit Ask Me 3 Brochure 1

7 Your Doctor, Nurse, and Pharmacist Want to Answer 3 Are you nervous to ask your health provider questions? Don t be. You may be surprised to learn that your medical team wants you to let them know that you need help. Like all of us, doctors have busy schedules. Yet your doctor wants you to know: All you can about your condition. Why this is important for your health. Steps to take to keep your condition under control. Asking these questions can help me: ~ Take care of my health ~ Prepare for medical tests ~ Take my medicines the right way I don t need to feel rushed or embarrassed if I don t understand something. I can ask my doctor again. When I Ask 3, I am prepared. I know what to do for my health. Bring your medicines with you the next time you visit your doctor or pharmacist. Or, write the names of the medicines you take on the lines below. Like many people, you may see more than one doctor. It is important that your doctors know all the medicines you are taking so that you can stay healthy. Write Your Doctor s Answers to the 3 Questions Here: What is my main problem? What do I need to do? Why is it important for me to do this? Ask Me 3 TM is an educational program provided by the Partnership for Clear Health Communication at the National Patient Safety Foundation TM a coalition of national organizations that are working together to promote awareness and solutions around the issue of low health literacy and its effect on safe care and health outcomes.
