10 Step 1: Question Ask the QUESTION Identifiy the problem or what you want to know. Car Scenario: Why won't my car engiene turn on?
11 Step 2: Research. Research Gathering data, information, and facts to advance your knowledge or understanding of a subject.
12 Goals of Research Observe Predict Determine the cause Explain
13 Step 2: Research Car Scenario: What kind of research would you do if your car engine wasn't working?
14 Step 3: Hypothesis Hypothesis A testable explination for an observation or question. But a HYPOTHESIS is MORE than a guess it is LOGICAL.
15 Step 3: Hypothesis Car Scenario: If the car has a new battery, then the car engine will start.
16 Step 4: Experiment Experiment An organized procedure designed to test the hypothesis under controlled conditions. The experiment collects data.
17 Step 4: Experiment Car Scenario: Replace the car battery with a new one.
18 Step 4: Experiment Experiments are designed to pinpoint cause and effect relationships. To test one variable scientist use TWO groups or TWO situations at a time.
19 Experimental Variables Independent Variable The variable that gets changed in the experiment or is the variable being tested. Dependent Variable The variable that is affected in the experiment and relies on the independent variable. IT IS MEASURED! Control The variable that DOES NOT CHANGE so that you can make a comparison.
20 Step 5: Data & Observations Data The information collected during an experiment. Observations A piece of information we gather using our senses sight, hearing, smell, and touch.

23 Two Data Types Qualitative Data Quantitative Data
24 Qualitative Data Qualatative Data Focuses on descriptions. Example: Soft or Hard Colors Yellow, Green, Purple Wet or Dry
25 Quantative Data Quantative Data Focuses on numbers. Example: 25 cm 2.3 grams Liters, inches, pounds, etc.
26 Step 6: Analyze Data After the experiment scientist organize and analyze their data. Scientist use GRAPHS, CHARTS, AND TABLES to CLEARLY communicate the results of the experiment.
27 Step 7: Conclusion Conclusion A judgement that you form after considering all of the evidence. The conclusion summarizes the experiment and results. IF your conclusion doesn't match your hypothesis YOU MUST RE- EVALUATE.
28 Error Error When scientist make a mistake and need to do an experiment again. Car Scenario: The new battery did NOT turn on the engine. We MUST revelauate the situation and think of a new idea as to WHY the engine is not working.

He then thinks that he could have left them on the dresser in his bedroom. He goes to check, and sure enough, his keys are there! He grabs his keys and then leaves for work.
