1 Sexual Offenders: Criminality and Characteristics of Special Populations June 8, 2012, RAMKOTA INN, Sioux Falls, SD; Amphitheater II Presented by Jill D. Stinson, Ph.D. Sponsored by South Dakota Association for Treatment of Sexual Abusers Jill D. Stinson, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in the state of Missouri. She is the Sex Offender Treatment Coordinator and a Psychologist II at Fulton State Hospital, Fulton, Missouri. Her employment duties involve development and evaluation of comprehensive facility-wide sex offender treatment services for forensic psychiatric sex offenders and civilly-committed Sexually Violent Predators. Dr. Stinson completed her graduate studies in psychology at the University of Arizona. She has authored two original books, published nine peer-reviewed journal articles and five book chapters in the areas of sex offender assessment, treatment, and management. Dr. Stinson also has several manuscripts in preparation and she has presented at 20 conferences regarding various topics in sex offender treatment including risk assessment. She will be joining the faculty of the Psychology Department at East Tennessee State University in the fall of 2012 where she will be examining successful integration of sex offender services into risk management and aftercare community programming. Pre-registration is $75 for ATSA members, $100 for non-members, if registered before month/day/2012. This cost will increase to $100 for ATSA members, $125 for non-members after month/day/2012. Description: This workshop will address criminal characteristics of sex offenders in terms of demographic data, criminal history, and characteristics of their victims. Special populations of sex offenders will also be discussed including intellectual/developmental disabilities and psychopathology. Learning will be enhanced by reviewing case studies and discussing these examples in relationship to assessment and treatment needs. The workshop content will also address risk management and risk assessment areas, understanding both Axis I and Axis II disorders, and treatment of co-morbid conditions. Objectives: Teach participants how criminality and sexual deviance interact and impact treatment planning for sex offender. Provide participants information on conducting risk assessments by considering various factors including both static and dynamic issues. Review areas for supervision and management of sex offenders based on various concerns including intellectual and developmental variables and psychopathology.
