2 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROGRAM Utah has the 6 th fastest growth rate in the nation for people age 65 and older. The 65 and older population will increase from 213,201 in 2000 to 319,564 in 2015, a growth rate of 50%. The 75 and older population will increase 60% between 2020 and 2030, when the baby boom generation begins reaching age 75 (UT Aging Initiative, Utah Dept. of Human Services, Center for Public Policy and Administration-Univ. of Utah). With more older adults in the population, the clinician will be faced with the various issues of growing older and living longer. This conference will provide clinicians with a review of the current evidence on issues related to the difficult behaviors of older adults. The focus ranges from healthcare systems perspectives and clinical management strategies to pharmacological interventions. Selected topics focus on maintaining function and minimizing harm in effective management that acknowledges the limitations of the individual and works around those limitations. It will provide the clinician with knowledge of the issues relevant to maintaining a balanced, high quality of life. Target Audience This conference is appropriate for nurses, social workers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other clinicians involved with caring for older adults. Also included are administrators, nursing home directors and those caring for older adults in the inpatient or outpatient setting. OBJECTIVES Describe the incidence, characteristics and system impact for behaviors of the cognitively impaired adult. Examine effective strategies for managing difficult behaviors in resident and non-resident populations of older adults. Discuss the assessment and management of suicidal behavior in the elderly. Review key antecedents and the disease trajectory in terms of identifying appropriate intervention for patients with dementia at the end of life. Recognize the benefits/limitations for effective and safe pharmacological treatment in management of difficult behaviors. Describe the role of collaboration in preventing, identifying and managing delirium.
