June 2014 Newsletter No. 2 Newsletter The aim of these newsletters is to keep people with dementia and those close to them informed about the work of the Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance. Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance is a partnership of organisations, individuals, businesses and community groups working together with the shared aim of transforming the quality of life of people with dementia and helping Peterborough to become a dementia-friendly city. Want to write something for this newsletter? rob.henchy@peterborough.gov.uk In this newsletter: PDAA Update- Ferry Meadows joins the Dementia Alliance Free Dementia Training Dementia Community Garden Dementia Awareness Week Worried about your memory? 2 Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance Going from strength to strength Since launching on Feb Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance now has 21 members. This quarter has seen Nene Park trust who manage Ferry Meadows join. Susan Evans, Trust Senior Projects and Development Officer said, "We are delighted to join Peterborough's Dementia Alliance and play our part in creating a Dementia Friendly city. Nene Park is managed for the people of Peterborough so we are constantly working to see what we can do to make it more accessible to everyone and working with the alliance will help us to deliver this." Four key pledges have been made by the Trust; 1. To offer dementia awareness sessions for its entire staff 2. To engage with people with dementia and the Alliance to find ways to make Ferry Meadows and Nene Park accessible to all 3. To provide Ferry Meadows as a host for a monthly Dementia Cafe run by the Alzheimer's Society on the third Thursday of the month from 2pm until 4pm. For further information about the Dementia Cafe please contact the Alzheimer's Society on To establish a regular walking group at Ferry Meadows for those living with dementia and their carers to provide free gentle exercise in a safe and relaxed environment. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer walk leader should contact Susan Evans on or via susan.evans@neneparktrust.org.uk 2
Age UK Peterborough Access Free Dementia Training When Age UK joined PDAA they pledged to improve the knowledge and understanding of their staff in dementia. They contacted Peterborough City Council about the free dementia training on offer. A meeting was held to develop a bespoke course. The training was split into half days so the Age UK team could attend whilst continuing to offer their services. Julie Bourne, Client Services Manager from Age UK said Sally recognises that different people learn new information in different ways, her training had a good mix of group discussions, case studies and videos. I am extremely pleased with the training techniques, content and delivery. I would highly recommend this dementia training. Sally Cleaves from Peterborough City Council s Workforce Development team said Anyone wanting to learn more about dementia should consider coming on one of our free half day awareness courses. The course includes information on causes, symptoms, effects on the person s life and how you can help reduce some of the distress the person with dementia maybe experiencing. To book a course or find out more information please call or ppcttraining2@peterborough.gov.uk. Dementia Resource Centre Update Peterborough s Dementia Resource Centre (York Road, Millfield) remains on track to open in August The inside is really coming on and planning permission was granted to demolish 2 buildings on York Road to make space for a community garden (detailed below). These have now been levelled and external landscaping has started that includes improvements to the centre s car park. Following concern raised from people with dementia and their carers about finding the centre (the entrance is a on a one way street not accessible from Lincoln Road), Peterborough City Council has agreed to introduce large directional signs to the centre. Signage will be positioned on the junction of Dogsthorpe Road and Alexandra Road and the junction of Alexandra Road and York Road. All leaflets and service information will direct customers in to the centre via Alexandra Road. 3
Dementia Community Garden Project Since the last newsletter a team of volunteers have met to design a garden at the Resource Centre. This will be managed by and for users of the centre. The design has been developed to offer a quiet space for reflection, outdoor seating and a mixture of accessible planting beds so the centre s weekly gardening group can be enjoyed by everyone. This garden was made possible through a kind donation from a charitable trust administered by Buckles Solicitors. The Alliance welcomes support to help develop the garden. We will be start work painting and planting beds on Monday 28 July We already have 27 of the Lloyds bank Peterborough team giving a day to come and help. Anyone interested in getting involved Rob.Henchy@peterborough.gov.uk or call Dementia Awareness Week May One of the key objectives of Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance is to raise awareness about dementia locally. Dementia Awareness week is an annual campaign led by the Alzheimer s society to do just that. This year the week was started in style with the Sue Ryder Synergy Café (held every Monday at Thorpe Hall) treating over 60 people affected by dementia with a performance from a live jazz band. Alzheimer s Society Peterborough, who will run the Dementia Resource Centre, were joined by other PDAA members including NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation Trust, Age UK and Sue Ryder, at stalls in Queensgate and Serpentine Green. The stalls gave people the opportunity to ask questions about dementia and pick up leaflets and information. A big thank you to those that gave their time to do this. 4
Lloyds bank marked the occasion by doing a sponsored walk from Peterborough branch to their branch in Stamford. The team are in the process of joining PDAA and already have their next fundraising event scheduled - Well done to all those who took part. This year s dementia awareness week coincided with the re-launch of the Dementia Friends initiative. This Public Health England backed campaign included a TV advert introducing Gina who is living with dementia, and host of celebrities encouraging people to become dementia friends. For those that didn t catch the advert it can be viewed online at Thank you again to those organisations that agreed to display Dementia Friends literature. We want Peterborough to play a big part in the campaign reaching its goal of creating 1 million Dementia Friends by 2015 so please follow the link above or contact Rob.Henchy@peterborough.gov.uk to attend a free 45 minute information session to become a dementia friend. Volunteers Needed Peterborough Dementia Resource Centre will offer a range of interesting and enjoyable groups and activities in things like art and crafts to reminiscence and memory stimulation groups, gardening groups and cookery classes for carers. The Alzheimer s Society cannot offer this diverse range of activities without the help of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to; - transport people who have no other means of getting to groups/ activities - help prepare and welcome people to groups/ activities - support and encourage people to take part in groups/ activities People can give as little as 1 hour a fortnight, the important thing to offer is commitment and regularity. To find out about the exciting volunteering opportunities at the Dementia Resource Centre please contact Alzheimer s Society on
Worried about your memory? If you, or someone you are close to, have been feeling confused, agitated or forgetful, it may be a good idea to visit the GP. If you are concerned about someone else, you may like to suggest that you accompany them on the visit. It is possible that these symptoms are an indication of dementia. This term describes a group of symptoms caused by the physical impact of disease or injury on the brain. There are a number of different conditions that lead to dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular disease (including stroke) and dementia with Lewy bodies. Each person will experience dementia in his or her own individual way, but there will usually be: a decline in memory, reasoning and communication skills a gradual loss of the skills needed to carry out daily activities confusion If you want to know more about dementia please visit Or call the Peterborough branch of the Alzheimer s Society on
