1 2014 Faculty Senate Awards Mission College of Pharmacy Research Award Nominee Name: David Lee Phone: Department: FA.OSU/OHSU College of Pharmacy Nomination Submissions and Required Documents Included in Packet 1. Nomination Letters 1 a. Jon Furuno 2. Summary 3. CV
2 Faculty Senate Awards To the Selection Committee, Please accept this letter of nomination for Dr. David Lee for the OHSU Research Award. Dr. Lee is a relatively new faculty member, who joined the faculty of the Oregon State University/Oregon Health & Science University College of Pharmacy as an Assistant Professor in September Nonetheless, in that time, Dr. Lee has amassed an impressive research portfolio which forecasts well for a successful research career. Dr. Lee s training is in clinical pharmacy and pharmacology and has chosen geriatric pharmacotherapy and pharmacoepidemiology as his primary research and clinical interests. To support this work, Dr. Lee recently received a New Investigator Award from the Medical Research Foundation of Oregon and has previously received support from the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Dr. Lee has seven peer-reviewed publications including two, recent, first author papers in JAMA Internal Medicine and Medical Care. Both are large studies of the effect of cardiovascular medications on important cardiovascular and pulmonary outcomes as a well physical activity. These findings are sure to garner interest from the scientific and lay community given the high prevalence of both the diseases under study and use of these drugs, which is likely to increase given recent guidelines. In short, Dr. Lee is an excellent scientist addressing important public health questions and he would be an excellent choice for the OHSU Research Award. Jon P. Furuno, Ph.D. Associate Professor
3 Summary Since starting my position at OHSU/OSU College of Pharmacy in September of 2011, my research has been focused on the adverse effects of statins on physical activity, muscle mass, and physical function in older adults. The first of these was just accepted to JAMA Internal Medicine (in press), Statins and Physical Activity in Older Men: The Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS). Two other studies are currently under way are looking at statins and muscle mass in men (MrOS) and women (Women s Health Initiative). Both of these manuscripts are currently in preparation. Other firstauthored publications include Journal of Pharmacy Technology (cognitive impairment and medication complexity) and Medical Care (use of beta-blockers in coronary and pulmonary disease) examined how medical treatment can affect medical care in older adults. My future interests include exploring barriers to care after discharge from the hospital or emergency department (visits) in older adults. These events are generally precipitating a large change in prescription usage, some may or may not be for the best. This research will include interviews of older patients from OHSU hospitalizations and ED visits and follow the patients for subsequent hospitalization or ED visit. I m excited for these research opportunities at OHSU/OSU.

7 February 13, 2014 To whom it may concern, I write in strong support of Dr. David S. Lee s nomination for the Oregon Health and Science University Faculty Senate Research Award. I have known David since 2009, when he started as a postdoctoral fellow. I have found him to be an intelligent, hard-working, and a thorough researcher. Our work together has produced several important manuscripts in journals such as, Medical Care, PLOS ONE, and JAMA Internal Medicine. David s work explores the important field of therapeutic competition in older adults the problem of using medications for one medical condition, but that may worsen their overall health. In addition, his own independent research has been published in Journal of Pharmacy Technology and JAMA Internal Medicine. These manuscripts have further enumerated the possible adverse effects of medications or medical conditions on overall health in older adults, including cognitive function and physical activity. For these reasons, I believe David is deserving of this award and I recommend him without reservation.
