2 ALZHEIMER S DISEASE ANNUAL UPDATE 2015 Highlights We are offering a Pre-Intensive for Advanced Health Care Providers (MD s, DO s, NP s, PA s only) AND a Pre-Intensive for Other Health Care Providers on the evening of Thursday, November 12, You can attend one of these programs separately or include it with the conference on Friday. To meet increasing popularity and demand for our conference and to minimize travel time and expense for attendees, you can attend Friday s conference at the Concourse Hotel in Madison OR attend a live webcast of the conference at the Westwood Conference Center in Wausau OR University of Wisconsin-Superior in Superior. Statement of Need The Alzheimer s Association estimates that there are 5.4 million Americans with Alzheimer s disease affecting the lives of 14.9 million unpaid caregivers. There is a new case of Alzheimer s disease every 69 seconds, and it is currently the 6th leading cause of death. In the future, Alzheimer s disease is expected to have significant effects on the social and economic structure of our country. There is a heightened need for medical professionals as well as policymakers to address the specter of an increasing prevalence of Alzheimer s disease in an aging society. The goal of this conference is to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic capability of healthcare providers who care for persons with Alzheimer s disease and related dementias. Elements of Competence This CME activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, and systems-based practice. Learning Objectives Following this program, the participant should be able to do the following: Distinguish the clinical pathologies and common biochemical features underlying the criteria for differential diagnosis of dementias. Credit Accreditation Statement: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the Wisconsin Geriatric Education Center. The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Learning Objectives Following this program, the participant should be able to do the following: Understand normal patterns of cognitive aging, differentiate them from clinical conditions and be able to explain contemporary methods of evaluating memory complaints in clinical practice. Apply a multi-step process to assess an individual s medical and psychosocial contributions to their psychological and behavioral symptoms of dementia. Credit Continuing Education Units: The University of Wisconsin-Madison, as a member of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA), authorizes this program for.15 continuing education units (CEU s) or 1.5 hours. 4 FRIDAY CONFERENCE - 11/13/15 Target Audience This program is intended for primary care physicians, psychologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers and other health professionals who diagnose, treat and manage Alzheimer s disease and related disorders in diverse populations. Learning Objectives Following this program, the participant should be able to do the following: Identify pathological characteristics and diagnostic criteria of Lewy Body dementias and describe management strategies to use for patients experiencing compromised motor function with dementing disorders. Explain the association of positive and negative affect on health outcomes and the role they play in the coping process. Discuss the diagnostic criteria and expected neuro-imaging and neuro-pathology associations for primary progressive aphasia and its subtypes. Explain how dementia symptoms can manifest differently for each individual and understand how to convert neuropsych testing into a tailored intervention plan focused on an individual s abilities and strengths. Define areas of capacity and the methods of comprehensive evaluation for safe and independent living. Explain current validated and endorsed instruments to efficiently assess for dementia and delirium in the Emergency Department.
