D. Research Position University of California at Los Angeles - Neuropsychiatric Institute Sept Sept.1994 Research assistant with the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center. UCLA s Center for Excellence in brain injury involves a multi-disciplinary team approach in which Neuropsychology works in concert with the Neurosurgery and Epidemiology departments on this parent grant. This longitudinal study is evaluating 500 adults (ages 16-60) who sustain a moderate to severe head injury and are hospitalized at one of three major medical centers that represent the aggregate catchment area of the western Los Angeles region. This large and representative cohort of brain injured adults will be assessed at each of four time points: early in the patient s acute hospitalization, and three subsequent follow-up probes at six, twelve, and eighteen months post-injury. Neuropsychology will assess three domains including: Neuropsychological; Psychosocial/Behavioral; and Competency/Disability. Among the hypotheses tested are: 1. Whether level of Neuropsychological performance at discharge predicts Neuropsychological, Psychosocial/Behavioral and Competency/Disability at eighteen months post-injury; 2. whether neuropsychological functioning and/or recovery rate at six and twelve months predicts Psychosocial/Behavioral and Competency/Disability outcome at eighteen months; and 3. comparison of PET findings with neuropsychological functioning over time.
